Which smart home platforms support Matter motion sensors?
All five platforms we track (Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant) pair a Matter motion or occupancy sensor, show its state, and let motion start an automation. All five cells are High confidence in our v1.14 matrix. Presence (mmWave) sensors use the same Matter Occupancy Sensor type, so they follow the same row.
| Platform | Pairs | Shows status | Starts an automation | Automation action | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | No (it's a sensor) | High |
| Google Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | No (it's a sensor) | High |
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | Yes | Yes | No (it's a sensor) | High |
| SmartThings | Yes | Yes | Yes | No (it's a sensor) | High |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Yes | Yes | No (it's a sensor) | High |
The "No" in the automation action column is normal, not a gap: a motion sensor is an input. It starts automations; it isn't something an automation switches on or off.
Matter motion sensors on Apple Home (HomeKit)
Apple Home pairs Matter motion and occupancy sensors natively, shows their state in the Home app, and lets detection start automations. You'll want an Apple Home hub (HomePod or Apple TV) for remote access and full automations, and a Thread border router if the sensor is Thread-based. Minimum platform version is iOS 16.1. Apple's supported Matter accessories page lists motion sensors, and the iPhone user guide gives a "turn on lights in a stairway when motion is detected" example.
Independent tests back this up. A 2026-08-05 hands-on by homekit.reviews used the IKEA MYGGSPRAY's occupancy "Detects / Stops Detecting" triggers to drive a lights automation, and a 2026-05-14 AppleInsider review had the same sensor turn a closet light on and off. One caveat: Matter PIR sensors may show as Occupancy rather than Motion in Apple Home (reports differ), but both trigger automations.
Matter motion sensors on Google Home
Google Home lists Occupancy Sensor on its Matter supported-devices page, and the consumer help for automation starters includes an occupancy starter ("When a sensor detects occupancy"). You need a Google or Nest Matter hub, plus a Thread border router for Thread sensors.
The independent evidence is strong: a 2026-08-03 Android Police hands-on QR-paired a Matter mmWave occupancy/presence sensor into Google Home and found occupancy available as a native trigger in the automation editor. Google's developer Script Editor starter list also includes OccupancySensing, which backs up the same trait for people who write scripted automations.
Matter motion sensors on Alexa: can motion start a routine?
Yes. Alexa pairs Matter motion and occupancy sensors, shows their state, and motion can start an Alexa Routine. Amazon's Matter category mapping maps Occupancy Sensing to Alexa.MotionSensor, and Amazon's 2018 developer blog says motion sensor updates can activate Routines. You need a Matter-enabled Echo or eero hub.
Newer independent tests supersede an older negative. A 2026-03-31 hands-on by Frank's Easy Tech Corner paired an Aqara FP300 natively over Thread through an Echo and had Alexa+ build Routines started by presence and by "no motion." A 2026-03-14 (updated 2026-09-11) gadget-review-lab test paired an IKEA MYGGSPRAY to an Echo Show 8 by Matter QR and a motion-started routine turned on a Tapo plug. The older Pocket-lint 2024 review said motion couldn't initiate another device, but that's now older context. Presence/mmWave sensors map to Alexa's MotionSensor type (there's no separate presence type). Two caveats are about reliability, not missing features: a December 2025 community report described a MYGGSPRAY that kept dropping out of Alexa, and a 2026-02-04 report by The Verge covered connection problems with IKEA's first Matter-over-Thread products, including a sensor falling off Alexa.
Matter motion sensors on SmartThings
SmartThings lists Occupancy Sensor under its Matter Devices Support page, and a 2026-09-28 SmartThings FAQ confirms IKEA Matter sensors trigger Routines, naming MYGGSPRAY motion routines specifically. You need a SmartThings-compatible hub (standalone hub, Samsung TV, Station, etc.).
Independent tests agree: a 2026-02-11 Techtest hands-on commissioned a MYGGSPRAY into SmartThings via an Aeotec hub and read motion and illuminance values, and a 2026-02-24 Rental Home Automator review used MYGGSPRAY as an automation input.
Matter motion sensors on Home Assistant
Home Assistant exposes Matter motion and occupancy sensors as binary sensors with full trigger support. The Matter integration page covers adding devices by QR code, and the binary sensor docs list Motion detected/cleared and Occupancy detected/cleared as automation triggers. You need the HA Matter Server (HA OS recommended) and a Thread border router for Thread devices.
Independent tests are solid: a 2025-12-31 Teknik i Hemmet hands-on added a MYGGSPRAY by QR code on the first attempt and found motion reacted fast, and a 2026-02-20 TechteamGB test used MYGGSPRAY lux to gate HA light automations. A 2026-04-18 ChrisHansenTech review used an Aqara W200 presence binary sensor as a YAML automation trigger. One caveat: a 2026 community issue reported missed events and subscription timeouts with IKEA Thread sensors in Home Assistant, with fixes coming from network and firmware changes rather than anything missing in Home Assistant.
Motion or presence: what's the difference over Matter?
Over Matter, there's no separate "presence sensor" type. Both PIR motion sensors (like Eve Motion and the Aqara P2) and mmWave-plus-PIR presence sensors (like the Aqara FP300, Meross MS605, and mains-powered Shelly Presence Gen4) use the Matter Occupancy Sensor type. On Alexa, presence sensors map to the same MotionSensor type, and Shelly says its Presence Gen4 shows up as a Motion Sensor on Alexa, Occupancy Sensing on Google and a Presence Sensor on SmartThings. The practical difference is detection behavior: PIR sensors report motion events, while mmWave presence sensors can report continued presence even when you're sitting still. Radar sensitivity and zone settings stay in the maker's app. Shelly, for example, supports up to 10 zones in its own app and says Matter apps may show fewer.
Light level, temperature and other extras
Many Matter motion and presence sensors also expose illuminance (lux) and sometimes temperature or humidity as extra endpoints. Platform support for those extras varies. Aqara states illuminance is not exposed on Alexa for the FP300, and Meross makes the same note for the MS605. On Home Assistant, lux can be used to gate lights, and the TechteamGB test above did exactly that with a MYGGSPRAY. Day to day, that means a "turn on the light only when it's dark" rule may need Home Assistant or the maker's app if your platform doesn't show the light reading. See our light sensor page for the full light-level matrix.
Which platform is best for Matter motion sensors?
Every platform handles the basic "motion turns on a light" job, and all five cells are High confidence. The differences are in the extras: which platforms expose lux, how presence is labeled, and how reliably specific Thread sensors stay connected. The bigger practical question is your Thread border router, since most of these sensors are Thread-based and need one. Matter's multi-admin also lets you share one sensor with two platforms at once (see our multi-admin page), and our hubs page covers Thread border router options.
Matter motion and presence sensors we track
- Eve Motion (Matter): Matter over Thread, PIR motion sensor. Eve markets it for Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings; its light reading, outdoor rating and Eve-app history are extras beyond the motion row, and we haven't seen an independent test of this exact model yet.
- Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2: Matter over Thread, PIR motion plus illuminance. Aqara said illuminance wasn't available on Alexa at launch, and community reports describe a cap of about 1,500 lux, with light reported on motion or on a poll to save battery.
- Aqara Presence Multi-Sensor FP300: Matter over Thread, mmWave presence plus light and temp/humidity endpoints. Aqara states illuminance is not exposed on Alexa; radar sensitivity settings stay in Aqara Home or Home Assistant.
- Meross Smart Presence Sensor MS605: Matter over Thread, radar plus PIR plus illuminance. Maker notes Alexa currently doesn't support the light sensor; multi-zone presence via the Meross app.
- Shelly Presence Gen4: Matter over Wi-Fi, so no Thread border router needed. It's USB-C powered rather than battery, with always-on mmWave presence and ambient light states (dark, twilight, bright).
We don't rank these sensors. Our records note no product-level automation test yet for the Meross MS605 or Shelly Presence Gen4, and Eve Motion hasn't been independently device-tested; the Aqara FP300 is the sensor in the Alexa tests above. The platform cells rest on the tests cited in each section.
How we checked
These values come from MatterCheck matrix v1.14, with every cell last checked on 2026-10-17. A High confidence rating requires an official statement plus a dated hands-on test on that platform. See our methodology, the motion sensor type page, multi-admin, and hubs pages for more.
