Do I need a hub for Matter?
Usually yes — and for Thread devices you also need a Thread border router. Every claim below is from the platform's own docs, checked 2026-10-16.
Three roles, often in one box
- Commissioner — your phone app. It passes Wi-Fi or Thread credentials to a new device over Bluetooth LE during setup (Amazon, Home Assistant, SmartThings).
- Controller / hub — the always-on device that controls the accessory after setup, and what most platforms need for local and remote control.
- Thread border router — forwards traffic between a Thread mesh and your Wi-Fi/Ethernet LAN. Wi-Fi and Ethernet Matter devices don't need one; Thread devices do.
Matter runs over IPv6 on Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread. Google says IPv6 must be enabled on your home network, and Home Assistant says IPv6 multicast/mDNS must flow freely (VLANs and multicast filtering can break it).
Per platform
Apple Home
With iOS 18+, an iPhone can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub; iPhone 15 Pro and later can also control Thread accessories without one. Otherwise Thread accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub — Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd gen), HomePod mini — or a compatible third-party border router. Apple still recommends a home hub "for the best experience". Apple support 102135 (published 2026-05-07).
Google Home
Google requires a Matter-enabled hub before you can add Matter devices; it also enables local control and remote control. Wi-Fi-only hubs include Nest Audio, Nest Mini, Nest Hub (1st gen). Hubs that are also Thread border routers: Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro (6E), Google TV Streamer (4K). Google Nest help 12391458.
Amazon Alexa
Matter devices connect to Alexa through a Matter-supported Echo or eero (the Echo/eero acts as Matter administrator) — no separate vendor hub or smart home add-on needed. Matter-compatible Echo devices run the Matter 1.5 SDK (subset of Matter 1.5 and lower device types) over Wi-Fi and Thread. A Thread border router must commission Matter-over-Thread devices. Matter-enabled Echo / eero (Amazon list, checked 2026-10-16): Echo (2nd Gen and newer); Echo Dot (2nd Gen and newer); Echo Dot Max (2025); Echo Dot with Clock (2nd Gen and newer); Echo Flex; Echo Hub; Echo Input; Echo Plus (2nd Gen); Echo Pop; Echo Show 21; Echo Show 15 (1st Gen and newer); Echo Show 11 (2025); Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen); Echo Show 8 (1st Gen and newer, 2025); Echo Show 5 (1st Gen and newer); Echo Spot (2024); Echo Studio (1st Gen and newer, 2025); eero 6 / 6+; eero 7; eero Beacon; eero Max 7; eero Outdoor 7; eero PoE 6; eero PoE gateway; eero Pro; eero Pro 6E / Pro 6; eero Pro 7.
Also Thread border routers: Thread 1.1 — Echo (4th Gen). Thread 1.3 — Echo Dot Max (2025), Echo Hub, Echo Plus (2nd Gen), Echo Show 21, Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen), Echo Show 11 (2025), Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen), Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen, 2025), Echo Studio (1st Gen and newer, 2025), eero 6 / 6+, eero 7, eero Beacon, eero Max 7, eero Outdoor 7, eero PoE 6, eero PoE gateway, eero Pro, eero Pro 6E / Pro 6, eero Pro 7. SmartThings
You need a SmartThings Matter controller hub; for Thread devices that controller must include a Thread border router. Samsung lists the SmartThings 2018 Hub (v3) and Aeotec Smart Home Hub as controllers with Thread; the 2015 Hub (v2) is Wi-Fi/LAN only and needs a third-party border router on the same network plus its 32-character Thread network key. SmartThings support.
Matter 1.6 (announced 2026-10-06): Samsung says SmartThings now supports Matter 1.6, adding energy meters, closures (doors/gates), irrigation and soil sensors, and local app-to-hub control on the same Wi-Fi (SmartThings Station, V2/V3/V4 hubs, hub-enabled Samsung TVs and Family Hub). Hub firmware 0.62.14 is rolling out 2026-10-15 to 10-20, so your hub may not have it yet. Sources: Samsung Newsroom, ST hub release notes (fetched 2026-10-16).
Home Assistant
Home Assistant runs its own Matter controller (Matter Server app; Home Assistant OS is the only supported install). Thread devices need at least one Thread border router near them — an Apple/Google one works (it can't read the encrypted Matter traffic), or HA itself with Connect ZBT-1/ZBT-2/SkyConnect + the OpenThread Border Router app. New devices are added via the Companion app on a phone. Note: HA's Matter OTA updates don't work for Thread devices behind Apple border routers. HA Matter docs.
Gotchas
- A Thread logo is not the same as Matter support — some Thread devices are HomeKit-only (HA docs).
- Bridges (e.g. Hue Bridge, Aqara Hub M2, SwitchBot Hub 2, IKEA Dirigera) expose their own non-Matter devices over Matter, often with fewer features than native integrations (HA docs).
- Multi-admin: one device can join several platforms; SmartThings says each device supports up to 5 connected services.
Not covered yet: Thread network merging across brands (Thread 1.4 credential sharing). We won't state it until we've checked each platform's docs.
