Which smart home platforms support Matter smart plugs?
All five platforms MatterCheck tracks can pair a Matter smart plug directly over Matter, show its on/off state in the app, and switch it as an automation action. Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant also let the plug's on/off state start an automation, while on Amazon Alexa that trigger is Unknown. Four of the five plug cells are High confidence; Alexa sits at Med because Amazon's Matter table maps plugs to control only and dated community reports conflict on whether an Alexa routine can start from a Matter plug.
| Platform | Pairs | Control | Starts an automation | Automation action | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
| Google Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | Yes | Unknown | Yes | Med |
| SmartThings | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
Matter smart plugs on Apple Home (HomeKit)
Apple Home treats Matter outlets as on/off accessories. Pair, control, trigger and action are all Yes, with High confidence. Apple's Matter accessories support page, published 2026-05-07 and unchanged when we re-read it on 2026-10-17, lists outlets among supported Matter types. For automations, Apple's scenes and automations help says "To start an automation when an accessory turns on or off, choose An Accessory is Controlled." The trigger cell rests on that official statement; the two hands-ons below did not use a plug as the trigger.
Minimum platform version is iOS 16.1. You'll want an Apple Home hub such as a HomePod or Apple TV for remote access and full automations; Thread plugs also need a Thread border router. Independent native Matter hands-ons back the cell: AppleHome Authority added an IKEA GRILLPLATS Matter over Thread plug on 2026-03-25, with instant control and use as an automation action, and MESH added a Tapo P110M Matter over Wi-Fi plug on 2025-11-09, using the Home app, Siri, automations and notifications. Apple Home doesn't show a plug's energy readings on iOS 26, so treat any metering as a maker-app feature there.
Matter smart plugs on Google Home
Google Home supports Matter On/Off Plug-in Units for pairing, control, automation triggers and actions, all High confidence. Google's Matter supported-devices table lists On/Off Plug-in Unit, and Google's consumer help for automation starters, conditions and actions names "When my plug turns on" as a starter and "Turn device on/off" as an action.
You need a Google/Nest Matter hub; Thread plugs need a Thread border router. Independent native hands-ons: 9to5Google paired a TP-Link Kasa KP125M by Matter QR into Google Home on 2023-05-25, with on/off control, timers and other automations, and Android Police paired an Eve Energy Matter plug on 2026-05-02 with basic controls and automation triggers. Google Home also lets you retype a plug's appearance in the app.
Matter smart plugs on Alexa: can a plug start a routine?
Alexa pairs and controls Matter on/off plugs, and you can use a plug as a routine action, so a scheduled or voice routine can turn the plug on or off. The open cell is the trigger: whether a Matter plug's on/off state can start an Alexa routine is Unknown, and the Alexa cell is Med confidence for that reason.
Amazon's Matter categories page, re-read 2026-10-18, maps On/Off plug to PowerController for control only, with no Matter-specific routine-starter column or sentence. Community reports conflict. A SmartThings Community member reported on 2024-03-09 that a Tapo P125M Matter-over-Wi-Fi plug "will work as the trigger in an Alexa routine when added via Matter." Another member posted screenshots on 2024-04-11 that his Eve Energy and Tapo Matter outlets "do not show up as events/triggers for Alexa routines" while control still worked. The same day JDRoberts replied that his Tapo P125M plugs "definitely show up as Alexa routine trigger candidates." On 2024-05-03 the first reporter added that some Matter plugs and switches work as triggers, "but most switches do not." Bridged Matter outlets and virtual switches weren't listed as starters at all in two August 2025 reports. Our latest search, on 2026-10-18, found no new report of a Matter plug added directly to an Echo starting a routine, so for now it looks model, firmware or account dependent. If you need a plug-driven routine on Alexa, test it with your own plug before relying on it.
Matter smart plugs on SmartThings
SmartThings supports On/Off Plug-in Unit and Dimmable Plug-in Unit devices for pairing, control, trigger and action, with High confidence. SmartThings' Matter Devices Support page lists On/Off Plug-in Unit under Plugs and Actuators. You need a SmartThings-compatible hub such as a standalone hub, Samsung TV or Station.
Independent native hands-ons back the cell. Rental Home Automator tested the IKEA GRILLPLATS Matter-over-Thread plug with SmartThings on 2026-09-23, finding pairing worked, commands were fast, power monitoring appeared, and the plug stayed connected. An earlier IKEA Matter Smart Home review also found GRILLPLATS worked very well with SmartThings. SmartThings' own 2026-09-28 IKEA FAQ names GRILLPLATS plug control and compatible routines.
Matter smart plugs on Home Assistant
Home Assistant pairs Matter plugs and typically exposes them as switch entities, so on/off control, triggers and actions are all Yes, High confidence. You need the Home Assistant Matter Server, with HA OS recommended; Thread plugs need a Thread border router for the Thread side.
Home Assistant's Matter integration page lists Switch among supported Matter categories, and the switch building block has "Switch turned on/off" triggers and on/off/toggle actions. Two independent native hands-ons: chrissmart.de added an IKEA GRILLPLATS by Matter QR in the Companion app on 2026-08-11 and used BILRESA buttons plus a FRITZ energy-surplus automation to switch the plug, and AnalisisGadgets ran GRILLPLATS in HA from 2026-05-18 for two weeks, seeing energy, power, voltage and current entities with no disconnects after a router reboot fixed initial pairing. One caveat: GRILLPLATS electrical sensors may first appear under Diagnostics.
What Matter controls on a smart plug, and what it doesn't
The MatterCheck plug/outlet matrix covers on/off pairing, control, automation trigger and automation action only. Power and energy metering is not part of that cell. It's a product-level extra, and where it shows up differs by platform and maker app.
Day to day, that means on/off is the reliable baseline everywhere: if a Matter plug pairs, the platform can switch it and expose its state. Extras like energy monitoring, child lock, LED brightness or multi-tap scene buttons may live in the maker's app or appear only on some platforms. For example, Third Reality says the M1's real-time energy monitoring is supported on SmartThings, Home Assistant and the 3R-Installer app, but on Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home the maker's materials describe on/off only until Matter power metering attributes surface more widely. Eve says energy management features are currently available on SmartThings and Home Assistant, with energy monitoring through the Eve app on Apple/Google paths. Reports on IKEA GRILLPLATS differ for Apple Home: some reviews mention energy attributes there, but AppleHome Authority's 2026-03-25 test saw no energy data on iOS 26. Home Assistant hands-ons show energy, power, voltage and current.
Thread or Wi-Fi: which kind of Matter plug?
Matter plugs we track split into two transports:
- Thread: Eve Energy (Matter), IKEA GRILLPLATS, Onvis Smart Plug S4, and the Inovelli White Series Smart On/Off Switch (a wall switch). Thread plugs need a Thread border router on the platform plus the Matter controller. Eve Energy is a Full Thread Device, so it can route mesh traffic for other Thread nodes. Our sources don't say whether the other Thread models act as mesh routers.
- Wi-Fi: Tapo P125M, Meross MSS115, Third Reality M1, and Intecular InvisOutlet Pro. Wi-Fi Matter plugs don't need a Thread border router, but they still need a Matter controller on the platform. Intecular InvisOutlet Pro is an in-wall outlet rather than a plug-in plug.
Which platform is best for Matter smart plugs?
If you want "when the plug turns on, do X" automations, choose a platform where the trigger cell is Yes: Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings or Home Assistant. If you only want to switch plugs from scenes, routines, schedules or voice, all five platforms work for that, including Alexa.
We don't rank plugs. We list the ones we track and what's verified below. Because Matter supports multi-admin, you can often pair the same plug into more than one platform; see our multi-admin page for how multi-admin works generally.
Matter smart plugs we track
- Eve Energy (Matter): Matter over Thread; Full Thread Device that extends the mesh. Maker lists Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant. Energy monitoring via the Eve app on Apple/Google paths; Eve says energy management features are currently available on SmartThings and Home Assistant.
- IKEA GRILLPLATS smart plug: Matter over Thread; needs a Thread border router. IKEA says compatible with Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung via Matter. Reviews report energy attributes in Apple Home and Home Assistant; some community notes describe Alexa pairing issues for some units.
- Tapo P125M Mini Smart Wi-Fi Plug: Matter over Wi-Fi; no energy monitoring. Schedules, auto-off and away modes are in the Tapo app.
- Meross MSS115 Matter Smart Plug Mini: Matter over Wi-Fi; budget on/off plug with no energy metering. Catalog support names Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings.
- Onvis Smart Plug S4: Matter over Thread; needs a Thread border router and Matter controller. Catalog support names Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings. Energy monitoring isn't confirmed in our sources.
- Third Reality Smart Plug M1 (Power Metering): Matter over Wi-Fi. Real-time energy monitoring is explicitly supported on SmartThings, Home Assistant and the 3R-Installer app, but maker materials describe Apple Home, Alexa and Google Home as on/off only for energy until Matter power metering surfaces.
- Intecular InvisOutlet Pro: In-wall duplex outlet plus multi-sensor and nightlight; Matter over Wi-Fi. The primary Matter endpoint is an On/Off Plug-in Unit. Its pressure endpoint follows the pressure sensor row, so Apple Home and Alexa do not display it.
- Inovelli White Series Smart On/Off Switch: A wall switch, not a plug-in plug, that reports as a Matter On/Off Plug-in Unit. Matter over Thread; needs a Thread border router. Apple Home adds it as an Outlet, but you can set Display As to Light. Multi-tap scene control, LED notifications and Smart Bulb Mode are platform-specific extras.
How we checked
These values come from the MatterCheck matrix v1.14, with plug/outlet cells checked through 2026-10-19. Every platform cell carries a last-checked date, and a High confidence label requires an official statement plus a dated hands-on test on that platform. Med means the evidence is partial or conflicting. See our methodology, smart plug matrix page, multi-admin page and hubs page.
