Which smart home platforms support Matter thermostats?
All five platforms MatterCheck tracks can pair with and control a Matter thermostat, and all five can set one as an automation action. The split is whether the thermostat itself can start an automation: Google Home, SmartThings, and Home Assistant are Yes; Apple Home and Amazon Alexa are Unknown because we couldn't find an official statement or dated hands-on test showing a Matter thermostat starting a Home automation or Alexa Routine. Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, and SmartThings are Med confidence; Home Assistant is the only High confidence cell because it has both official automation documentation and independent native Matter thermostat tests.
| Platform | Pairs | Control | Starts an automation | Automation action | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Yes | Yes | Unknown | Yes | Med |
| Google Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Med |
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | Yes | Unknown | Yes | Med |
| SmartThings | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Med |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
Matter thermostats on Apple Home (HomeKit)
Apple Home pairs and controls Matter thermostats from iOS 16.1 or later, and the platform can adjust a Matter thermostat as an automation or scene action. You'll want an Apple Home hub such as a HomePod or Apple TV for remote access and full automations, plus a Thread border router if the thermostat uses Thread. Apple's Matter accessory list includes thermostats, and a 2026-04-07 AppleInsider hands-on with the Aqara W200 showed temperature and mode control plus use in scenes and automations as an action.
The main limitation is trigger support. Apple's Home automation guide names on/off accessories and sensors as automation starters, but it doesn't name a thermostat as something that can start an automation. Apple's automation help frames the accessory starter as an accessory that turns on or off or opens, which doesn't clearly cover a thermostat with modes and setpoints. A 2024-12-05 Trusted Reviews test added Tado X to Apple Home over Matter and used a motion sensor to set it to 18C and turn it off after 20 minutes, which shows the thermostat as an action, not a starter. That's why the trigger cell is Unknown rather than Yes or No. The workaround is to use a separate sensor as the trigger, such as the Aqara W200's occupancy sensor or a HomePod temperature sensor. Mysa's Apple Home guide adds a practical caveat: its thermostat's Apple Home automations are only reliable in Auto mode.
Matter thermostats on Google Home
Google Home can pair and control Matter thermostats, and Google's consumer automation help explicitly lists a thermostat local-temperature starter and a set thermostat mode/temperature action. Google's supported automation starters and actions page includes Thermostat Local temperature as a starter from 2025-09-10 and set mode/temperature as an action from 2025-10-01. You need a Google/Nest Matter hub, and Thread devices need a Thread border router.
This cell is still Med confidence because MatterCheck didn't find an independent dated hands-on test showing a Matter thermostat added directly to Google Home and then controlled or automated. The closest independent report is Android Authority's 2024-11-26 Tado X article, but it covers a difficult pairing process only. Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen is Google-native in Google Home, not Matter-commissioned into Google Home, so it doesn't count as that missing test. Community reports such as an Aqara Forum thread show the W200 paired to Google Home over Matter with a Celsius display bug, but no automation run.
Matter thermostats on Alexa: can a temperature change start a routine?
Alexa pairs and controls Matter thermostats through a Matter-enabled Echo or eero hub. Pairing and voice/app control work, and routines can set a thermostat as an action. Mysa's Alexa Matter guide confirms routine actions in all modes. A 2024-12-17 The Verge review shared a Nest Learning Thermostat 4th gen into Alexa over Matter and found smooth setup with instant local voice and app control, but it didn't test routines.
The trigger question stays Unknown. Amazon's Matter device categories table maps thermostats to ThermostatController for control only and has no routine-starter column. The Verge's Nest review shows control only, and Mysa's Alexa guide covers actions but not triggers. Amazon's Routines help describes temperature routines using the built-in sensor in some Echo speakers, not a connected Matter thermostat. Until Amazon states that a Matter thermostat state can start a routine, or an independent test shows it, the trigger remains Unknown.
Matter thermostats on SmartThings
SmartThings can pair and control Matter thermostats, and its automation model supports both thermostat triggers and thermostat actions. The official SmartThings Matter Devices Support page lists Thermostat, and the Edge matter-thermostat driver fingerprints include the Matter Thermostat and HVAC device types. You need a SmartThings-compatible hub such as a standalone hub, Samsung TV, or Station.
Confidence is Med because there isn't a fully working independent native Matter-to-SmartThings thermostat hands-on. Matter Alpha's 2025-06-26 test of the Honeywell Home X2S paired it into SmartThings over Matter, but setpoint changes didn't take effect and automations didn't work. That's a device-specific caveat rather than a platform No. A SmartThings Community thread also notes that heating and cooling setpoint actions appear in Routines only when the thermostat mode is auto, heat, or cool.
Matter thermostats on Home Assistant
Home Assistant is the only High confidence cell. Matter thermostats map to the climate domain, and Home Assistant's climate building block documents triggers such as thermostat mode changed, target temperature changed, and started heating or cooling, plus actions to set temperature and HVAC mode. Home Assistant's Matter integration page lists Climate as an entity category, and the climate page documents the automations. You'll run Home Assistant's Matter Server, with Home Assistant OS recommended, and a Thread border router if the thermostat uses Thread.
Independent tests include thesmarthome.blog's 2025-08-11 Eve Thermo test, which shared an Eve Thermo from Apple Home with a pairing code and set the target temperature from the thermostat card, and ChrisHansenTech's 2026-04-18 Aqara W200 test, which exposed current and target temperature, mode, and humidity. One device-dependent caveat: started heating or cooling triggers need the thermostat to report its running state, and Nest over Matter does not expose that.
What Matter controls on a thermostat, and what it doesn't
Matter gives platforms a common climate subset: current temperature, setpoint, and mode such as heat, cool, auto, or off. Some devices also expose humidity, but that isn't guaranteed across every platform or product. What Matter doesn't expose is just as important. Vendor schedules, learning features, presets, and energy charts usually stay in the maker's app. Nest learning features and Soli presence detection aren't part of Matter climate control; Eve Thermo schedules and history may live in the Eve app; Tado X users often rebuild schedules in Home Assistant automations because Matter alone doesn't carry them.
Day to day, that means you can reliably pair one Matter thermostat into your chosen platform and use it in scenes, routines, or automations as the thing being adjusted. Don't assume the full maker-app experience will appear in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant.
Which platform is best for a Matter thermostat?
If you only want to pair a thermostat and set its temperature from scenes, voice control, or automations, every platform in this guide works. If you specifically want the thermostat to start an automation, such as "when heating starts, turn on the fan," choose Google Home, SmartThings, or Home Assistant where the trigger is Yes. On Apple Home and Alexa, the trigger is Unknown, so plan on using a separate temperature, occupancy, or motion sensor as the starter instead.
Home Assistant has the strongest current evidence: official climate triggers and actions plus independent native Matter thermostat tests. Apple Home and SmartThings have strong control evidence but Med confidence for different reasons. Google Home has explicit official documentation but no independent native control test yet, and Alexa has control evidence but no trigger statement. Matter's multi-admin model also lets you share one thermostat with more than one platform, which can help if you prefer one ecosystem for daily control and another for automations. See the general multi-admin page for how sharing works.
Matter thermostats we track
MatterCheck doesn't rank thermostats; these are the models we track and what's verified. Radiator thermostat valves such as the Eve Thermo and Bosch Radiator Thermostat II are room-by-room radiator valves rather than whole-home HVAC wall thermostats, so treat them as a partial fit for the HVAC-style thermostat matrix.
- Eve Thermo (Matter) — Thread radiator thermostat valve, not a whole-home HVAC thermostat. Schedules and history may stay in the Eve app.
- Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) — Wi-Fi. Learning, Soli, and Motion Sense are Nest features beyond Matter climate.
- Meross Matter Smart Thermostat MTS300MA — Wi-Fi 24V HVAC wall thermostat. Requires a C-wire or compatible power arrangement, and the Meross app is required for initial HVAC configuration.
- Honeywell Home X2S Smart Thermostat — Wi-Fi 24V HVAC wall thermostat. C-wire required; auto-away and demand-response features stay in the Resideo app.
- Google Nest Thermostat (2020) — Wi-Fi non-Learning Nest. Some HVAC configurations need a C-wire or Nest Power Connector.
- LUX TQ1 Matter Smart Thermostat — Wi-Fi 24V HVAC wall thermostat. Has on-device system configuration and a local 7-day schedule; C-wire or LUX Power Bridge required.
- Mysa Smart Thermostat for Central HVAC — Wi-Fi 24V central HVAC thermostat. C-wire required with adapter sold separately; geofencing and energy charts remain in the Mysa app.
- Bosch Radiator Thermostat II [+M] — Thread radiator thermostat valve. Matter over Thread, with EU-focused retail in the tracked sources.
- LG Smart Thermostat (Apple Home Collection) — Thread, announced/pre-ship. Med confidence; Apple Adaptive Temperature and Clean Energy Guidance are Apple Home features, and non-Apple fabrics are unknown.
- Schneider Home Smart Thermostat (Apple Home Collection) — Thread, announced/pre-ship. Med confidence; presence-sensing display is a product feature beyond Matter, and non-Apple fabrics are unknown.
How we checked
These values come from the MatterCheck matrix v1.14, with each platform cell checked through 2026-10-19. Confidence is High only when there's both an official statement and a dated independent hands-on test on that platform for the device type; Med means the official picture is present but the independent hands-on evidence is missing, incomplete, or contradicted on some point. See our methodology, the live thermostat page, multi-admin page, and hubs page for the fuller matrix and hub requirements.
