Which smart home platforms support Matter door and window sensors?
All five platforms MatterCheck tracks (Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant) pair a Matter door or window contact sensor, show open/closed state, and let a door or window opening start an automation. Every cell is currently High confidence. Every contact sensor we track runs on Thread, so you'll need a Thread border router plus the platform's Matter hub. A contact sensor is an input, so all five platforms correctly leave automation action as No: you can't switch a sensor from an automation.
| Platform | Pairs | Shows open/closed | Starts an automation | Automation action | Confidence | Hub needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | No (it's a sensor) | High | Apple Home hub + Thread border router |
| Google Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | No (it's a sensor) | High | Google/Nest Matter hub + Thread border router |
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | Yes | Yes | No (it's a sensor) | High | Matter-enabled Echo or eero hub |
| SmartThings | Yes | Yes | Yes | No (it's a sensor) | High | SmartThings-compatible hub + Thread border router |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Yes | Yes | No (it's a sensor) | High | HA Matter Server + Thread border router |
Matter door sensors on Apple Home (HomeKit)
Apple Home pairs a Matter contact sensor directly, shows whether it's open or closed, and lets it start an automation. Apple's accessory list includes contact sensors, and a 2026-02-01 hands-on by HomeKit News found the Matter-over-Thread IKEA MYGGBETT paired natively, showed open/closed status and notifications, and worked as an automation trigger. Our matrix lists iOS 16.1 as the minimum version.
A contact sensor is not an actuator, so Apple Home won't use one as an automation action; that's normal for every platform. An Apple Home hub (HomePod or Apple TV) is recommended, and you need one for remote access and full automations, plus a Thread border router for Thread-based door sensors.
Matter contact sensors on Google Home
Google's Matter supported-devices list includes Contact Sensor (Boolean State), and Google Home's consumer help lists Binary State contact Opened/Closed among automation starters. In a 2026-05-02 Android Police hands-on, an Eve Door and Window triggered a Google Home automation in under a second, and an Aqara P2 also Matter-paired. A 2024-07-22 Matter Alpha test also multi-administered Eve Door and Window into Google Home and saw status updates.
You need a Google/Nest Matter hub and a Thread border router for these Thread-based sensors. A contact sensor is a starter, not an action. The official anchors are Google's Matter supported-devices table and Google's automation starters help page.
Matter contact sensors on Alexa: can a door opening start a routine?
Yes. Amazon maps Matter Contact Sensor to Alexa.ContactSensor, and Amazon's developer blog says contact-sensor updates can activate Alexa Routines. Independent tests back this up: Amazon's official Matter category mapping lists Contact Sensor to Alexa.ContactSensor; Amazon's Alexa blog says contact updates can activate routines; and a 2024-04-11 NotEnoughTech hands-on paired a Matter-over-Thread Aqara P2 straight to an Echo Hub and found open/closed state plus the ability to link it to Alexa Routines. Pocket-lint's 2024-05-12 test on an Echo Show 8 confirmed pairing and voice status, although it noted no push notifications.
Alexa shows open/closed only; tamper and other vendor extras stay in the maker's app. You need a Matter-enabled Echo or eero hub. As elsewhere, a contact sensor can start a routine but can't be an action.
Matter contact sensors on SmartThings
SmartThings lists Contact Sensor under its Matter device support. A 2026-02-24 Rental Home Automator hands-on used the IKEA MYGGBETT contact with SmartThings as a door/window automation input. SmartThings' consumer FAQ also names MYGGBETT door activity as available for routines. Official anchors are SmartThings' Matter Devices Support page and SmartThings' IKEA Matter FAQ. You'll need a SmartThings-compatible hub, and a Thread border router for Thread contact sensors.
Automation action is still No because a contact sensor is an input.
Matter contact sensors on Home Assistant
Home Assistant's Matter integration exposes contact sensors as a binary_sensor, and the automation editor has Door opened/closed as a trigger. A 2026-01-28 Techtest hands-on joined the IKEA MYGGBETT to Home Assistant through an SLZB-MR3 and saw open/closed changes arrive very fast, though commissioning needed several retries. A 2026-02-20 TechteamGB test also confirmed MYGGBETT reporting open/closed to HA.
You need the Home Assistant Matter Server (HA OS recommended) and a Thread border router. Official anchors: the HA Matter integration and the binary sensor triggers page. The sensor starts automations; it isn't an automation action.
What you get over Matter, and what stays in the maker's app
Across the products we track, Matter reliably carries the core contact state: open/closed, with battery commonly reported. Everything beyond that is maker-specific and usually stays in the maker's app. Eve's historical open-duration insights require the Eve app on the Apple Home path. Aqara's P2 has adjustable sensitivity, tamper alarm, and a programmable button billed as Aqara Home + Hub M3 extras, and Aqara says automation conditions may vary by ecosystem. Bosch's Door/Window Contact II [+M] reports open/closed to the Matter controller, but its integrated button works on a direct Matter connection and not through the Bosch Matter Bridge; Bosch also says automations and UI depend on the Matter controller maker, and pairing the sensor to a Bosch Controller switches it from Thread to Zigbee.
Which platform is best for Matter door and window sensors?
We don't rank sensors or platforms, but from the current matrix the honest answer is that all five platforms are High confidence for the basic job: a door or window opens, a light turns on, an announcement plays, or you get an alert. The practical differences are which hub and Thread border router you already own, and small differences in what each app shows: Alexa shows open/closed only, and Pocket-lint's Echo test saw no push notifications, while Apple Home sent notifications in HomeKit News's test. Matter also lets you share one sensor with two platforms; see Matter multi-admin. For the needed Thread border router, start at our Matter hubs page. If you're also looking at presence-style triggers, the same platform pattern appears in our Matter motion sensor guide.
Matter door and window sensors we track
- Eve Door & Window (Matter), Thread. The maker's feature table lists contact status, remote access, notifications, and automations for Apple Home and Google Home; historical open-duration insights require the Eve app.
- Aqara Door and Window Sensor P2, Thread. Aqara names Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and SmartThings over Matter, with Aqara Home extras needing Hub M3; automation conditions may vary by ecosystem.
- IKEA MYGGBETT door/window sensor, Thread. The sensor most dated hands-on tests used, verified directly in Apple Home, SmartThings, and Home Assistant.
- Bosch Smart Home Door/Window Contact II [+M], Thread. Bosch says it reports open/closed to the Matter controller; the button works direct but not through the Bosch Matter Bridge, and pairing to a Bosch Controller switches it from Thread to Zigbee.
- LG Door and Window Sensor TMSDAA4W, Thread, a Korea-market product. No product-level automation test in our records; platform exposure follows the type matrix.
- tink Basics Smart Door & Window Sensor (Matter), Thread. EU retail listing names Matter, Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, and SmartThings; no product-level automation test in our records.
We don't rank a "best" contact sensor. This is the set of Matter door and window sensors we currently track, and maker compatibility claims are maker claims unless a dated hands-on test on the platform is linked above.
How we checked
These values come from MatterCheck matrix v1.14, with contact-sensor cells last checked 2026-10-17. A High confidence value needs an official statement plus a dated hands-on test on that platform. For more on how we read evidence and when we label maker claims, see our methodology, the live contact sensor type page, multi-admin, and Thread border routers.
Last reviewed 2026-10-19. Platform support changes with app and firmware updates; check the live contact sensor page for the current cell values.
