Matter vs Zigbee vs Z-Wave: what's different, and what works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant
Matter isn't a radio like Zigbee or Z-Wave — Home Assistant's docs describe it as a control protocol that runs on top of Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread, while Zigbee and Z-Wave each bring their own network and need a hub or adapter. Matter is the one all five platforms support (Google Home with a Matter-enabled hub), Amazon's Echo and eero devices with a built-in hub also connect Zigbee, SmartThings (with a hub that has the radio) and Home Assistant (with the right adapters) connect all three, and no Apple or Google page we checked says their hubs connect Zigbee or Z-Wave directly. Zigbee devices (and, the CSA says, Z-Wave devices) can reach Matter platforms through a Matter bridge, and some products ship with both Matter and Zigbee modes.
Matter vs Zigbee vs Z-Wave at a glance
Here's how the three standards compare on the points people ask about most.
| Matter | Zigbee | Z-Wave | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maintained by | Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) | CSA (formerly known as the Zigbee Alliance, per Philips Hue) | Z-Wave Alliance (ITU-T G.9959 for the radio layers) |
| What it is | A control protocol with no radio of its own; runs over IP (IPv6) on Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread | A full stack: mesh network plus a shared data model ("universal language") | An RF-based technology for control, monitoring and status reading |
| Radio band | Wi-Fi or Ethernet; Thread uses the same IEEE 802.15.4 radio technology as Zigbee | 2.4 GHz and Sub-GHz; Zigbee 4.0 introduces support for European 800 MHz and North American 900 MHz | Sub-1 GHz |
| Network | IP-based; Thread is an IPv6 mesh | Self-healing mesh the CSA says scales to thousands of nodes | Full mesh without a coordinator node; Long Range is a star network of up to 4000 nodes |
| What you add to connect it | A Matter controller for your platform; Thread devices also need a Thread border router | A Zigbee hub or coordinator (an Echo with a built-in hub, a SmartThings-enabled hub, or a Home Assistant adapter) | A Z-Wave hub or adapter (a SmartThings-enabled hub, or a Home Assistant adapter plus a Z-Wave server) |
| One device in several apps | Yes: Multi-Admin, with a Matter controller for each platform | Not stated on the pages we checked | Not stated on the pages we checked |
| Security, as each body states it | A unique identity per device; data is encrypted | AES-128 message encryption and authentication | AES128 encryption |
The table uses each standards body's own descriptions of its technology; the What you add row comes from Amazon's, SmartThings' and Home Assistant's own pages, and the Zigbee Alliance note from Philips Hue. Thread — the low-power mesh many Matter devices use — is covered separately in Matter over Thread vs Matter over Wi-Fi.
What Matter, Zigbee and Z-Wave actually are
Matter is a control protocol, not a wireless standard. Home Assistant's Matter documentation says that unlike Zigbee, Z-Wave and Bluetooth, the Matter specification doesn't contain its own radio or network transport protocol — it's a service control protocol that runs on top of existing IP-based networks: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. The CSA's Matter page puts it the same way, saying Matter builds on Internet Protocol to enable communication across smart home devices, mobile apps and cloud services. For you, that means Matter doesn't add another radio to your home; it rides on Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread, and a Thread device also needs a Thread border router.
Zigbee is a full-stack wireless standard with its own mesh network. The CSA calls Zigbee "the only complete IoT solution - from mesh network to the universal language that allows smart objects to work together," and says its self-healing mesh topology scales to thousands of nodes, with support for both 2.4 GHz and Sub-GHz bands. Philips Hue's Matter page notes that the CSA was formerly known as the Zigbee Alliance, so the same standards body now maintains both Zigbee and Matter. In practice, Zigbee devices join their own network, run by a hub such as an Echo with a built-in smart home hub or by an adapter that Home Assistant's docs call a Zigbee coordinator.
Z-Wave is a separate sub-1 GHz mesh standard maintained by the Z-Wave Alliance. The Z-Wave Alliance describes it as an RF-based technology designed for control, monitoring and status reading in homes and light commercial buildings, operating in the sub-1 GHz band, with PHY and MAC layers defined by ITU-T G.9959, data rates up to 100 kbps and AES128 encryption. The Alliance says the sub-1 GHz band keeps Z-Wave clear of interference from Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Zigbee in the 2.4 GHz range — that's the Alliance's own claim, not an independent test. Thread uses the same IEEE 802.15.4 radio technology as Zigbee but is IP-based, per the CSA's Matter FAQ and Home Assistant's Thread docs, which also say Thread by itself doesn't control devices — Matter or Apple HomeKit runs on top.
Is Matter replacing Zigbee?
No page we checked says Matter will replace Zigbee or Z-Wave, and the CSA's own FAQ is explicit that they're different protocols. The CSA says there's no native interoperability between Matter and Zigbee devices, that Matter's data model "borrows heavily" from the Zigbee Cluster Library, and that Matter includes bridging specifications so the "tens of millions" of Zigbee devices already in homes can take part in a Matter ecosystem. So the CSA describes two separate protocols, with bridges between them.
Zigbee is also still being developed. The CSA announced Zigbee 4.0 on 2025-11-18, adding support for the European 800 MHz and North American 900 MHz PHY beyond 2.4 GHz, backward compatibility with Zigbee 3.0, and Zigbee Direct onboarding over Bluetooth Low Energy without a hub. The same announcement introduced Suzi, the CSA's brand for Zigbee's Sub-GHz long-range mesh, with the Suzi certification program planned to open in the first half of 2026. For Zigbee owners, the CSA says Zigbee 4.0 is fully backward compatible with Zigbee 3.0.

Apple Home
Apple's support page 102135, published 2026-05-07, lists the Matter accessory types the Home app supports, and bridges are on that list. No Apple page we checked says the Home app or an Apple home hub connects Zigbee or Z-Wave devices directly. That means Zigbee devices reach Apple Home through a Matter bridge; our Matter bridges guide covers which bridges work there. See Matter and Apple Home support for the full picture.
Google Home
Google's help page says you need a Matter-enabled hub to add Matter devices to Google Home. Google's developer documentation says all devices behind a Matter bridge appear as normal in Google Home, with the bridge itself appearing as an inert Control Bridge device. Google's about page notes that before Matter, smart home devices were only controllable over technologies like Wi-Fi, Zigbee or Z-Wave — but no Google page we checked says a Google or Nest hub connects Zigbee or Z-Wave directly.
Alexa
Amazon's developer documentation says Echo and eero devices with built-in smart home hubs connect Zigbee devices, supporting Zigbee 1.2 and 3.0. The list includes Echo (4th Gen), Echo Hub, Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen), eero Pro 6E and others — the full list is on Amazon's page. Amazon's help page says to check for a Zigbee logo, install the device within 30 ft (9 m) of the Echo, put it in pairing mode and say "Discover my devices," and that you can ask Alexa "Do you have a smart home hub?" Matter devices connect over Wi-Fi or Thread, per Amazon's Matter developer page. No Amazon page we checked mentions Z-Wave.
SmartThings
SmartThings Support says Zigbee, Z-Wave and LAN-connected devices require a SmartThings-enabled hub. SmartThings' developer documentation lists Matter, Zigbee, Z-Wave, LAN and Bluetooth as hub-connected device types. Aeotec's Smart Home Hub page — the hub works as a SmartThings Hub — lists up to 100 Zigbee and up to 100 Z-Wave devices, S2 security, Matter support and acting as a Thread border router. SmartThings' own pages we checked don't list which SmartThings hubs have a Z-Wave radio, so check your specific hub.
Home Assistant
Home Assistant connects all three, but each needs the right integration and hardware. Matter works through the Matter integration. Zigbee works through the ZHA integration with a Zigbee coordinator adapter — the docs call ZHA a hardware-independent Zigbee gateway that can replace most proprietary Zigbee gateways, and recommend Connect ZBT-2 for a new network. Z-Wave works through the Z-Wave integration, which needs a Z-Wave adapter (for example Connect ZWA-2) and a Z-Wave server such as the Z-Wave JS app. Home Assistant's FAQ says Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread and ESPHome devices need no internet connection at all. See Matter and Home Assistant support for details.
Using Zigbee or Z-Wave devices with Matter: bridges
The CSA says bridges let devices using other protocols such as Zigbee or Z-Wave take part in a Matter ecosystem, and that makers may add Matter by updating devices or, in some cases, the bridges they're connected to — whether a device gets an update depends on its hardware and the maker's choice. IKEA's Matter guide gives a concrete example: DIRIGERA acts as a Matter Bridge so older Zigbee-based TRÅDFRI devices keep working in your smart home.
In practice, a bridge means you keep the Zigbee network on its existing bridge and add that bridge to your Matter platform. Google's developer documentation describes devices behind a Matter bridge appearing as normal devices in Google Home, with the bridge itself as an inert Control Bridge. None of the pages we checked names a Z-Wave-to-Matter bridge product. Our guide to bridging Zigbee devices into Matter covers Hue, IKEA, Aqara and SwitchBot bridges and what bridged devices can do on each platform; Matter hubs and Thread border routers explains the hub side.
Products that can run Matter or Zigbee
Some tracked Matter products also have a Zigbee mode or Zigbee path; MatterCheck's product records note which mode each uses and how you switch.
| Product | Type | Matter connection | Zigbee mode, per MatterCheck's product records |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aqara Light Switch H2 (US) | Light switch (on/off light) | Thread | Thread or Zigbee, one at a time; can't run both at once |
| Aqara Climate Sensor W100 | Temperature / humidity sensor | Thread | Matter / Thread / Zigbee triple-mode; Zigbee mode goes through an Aqara hub |
| Aqara Presence Multi-Sensor FP300 | Presence / motion sensor | Thread | Also a Zigbee mode through an Aqara hub |
| Bosch Smart Home Door/Window Contact II [+M] | Door / window contact sensor | Thread | Ships in Matter / Thread mode; pairing it to a Bosch Controller switches it to Zigbee |
| Bosch Smart Home Radiator Thermostat II [+M] | Radiator thermostat | Thread | Matter by default; Zigbee when paired to a Bosch Controller |
| Shelly Flood Gen4 | Leak sensor | Wi-Fi | Zigbee firmware mode switched with 5 button presses |
| Shelly Flood S Gen4 | Leak sensor | Wi-Fi | Zigbee firmware mode switched with 5 button presses |
| Shelly EM Gen4 | Energy meter | Wi-Fi | Zigbee alternative mode |
MatterCheck's product records note that the Aqara Light Switch H2 can't run Zigbee and Matter over Thread at the same time; Bosch's Door/Window Contact II [+M] switches from Thread to Zigbee when it's paired to a Bosch Controller; and Shelly's Flood Gen4 has a Zigbee firmware mode switched with five button presses, while its Matter path is Wi-Fi. MatterCheck's platform results apply to the Matter mode only — a device in Zigbee mode joins a Zigbee hub instead. MatterCheck's checks cover 24 Matter device types, 16 of which pair on all five platforms, and its 106 tracked Matter products are 57 Thread, 2 Thread + Bluetooth and 47 Wi-Fi — none of them needs a Zigbee or Z-Wave radio to work as Matter.
Radios, adapters and range: what the standards bodies say
Zigbee and Thread share 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.15.4 radio technology. Home Assistant's ZHA docs say Zigbee channels 11 to 26 are all in the 2.4 GHz band, and Amazon's developer documentation lists Zigbee on Echo as 2.4 GHz with a 50-100 feet range. Home Assistant's Connect ZBT-2 page says the adapter runs either a Zigbee or a Thread network, not both, and that Home Assistant found multiprotocol inconsistent on the ZBT-1 — the page strongly recommends dedicating a device to each protocol.
Z-Wave operates below 1 GHz. The Z-Wave Alliance says Z-Wave supports full mesh networks without a coordinator node. For long range, the Alliance's Long Range page says Z-Wave Long Range uses a star network from the hub, supports up to 4000 nodes and up to 1.5 miles in long range mode at full power, and is designed to co-exist with Z-Wave mesh devices on the same network — those are the Alliance's own figures. Home Assistant's Connect ZWA-2 page says it has an 800-series chipset and can run Z-Wave and Z-Wave Long Range networks at the same time, and Home Assistant's Z-Wave docs say a Long Range-capable device asks you to pick Long Range or Mesh when you add it — Long Range if it's far from other devices or has had connection problems, Mesh if you already have a mesh.
Matter itself adds no new radio. Matter over Wi-Fi uses your existing home network, and Matter over Thread needs a Thread border router — Amazon's developer documentation says Thread-enabled Echo and eero devices act as border routers. See our hub comparison for which hubs are Thread border routers.
Matter, Zigbee or Z-Wave: how to decide
- Which platform you use. The table above shows Matter is the only one all five support; Zigbee connects directly on Alexa with a built-in-hub Echo, SmartThings and Home Assistant; Z-Wave connects directly only on SmartThings with a Z-Wave-capable hub and Home Assistant with an adapter, per the pages we checked.
- Whether you want one device in several apps. Matter's Multi-Admin, per the CSA, needs a Matter controller for each platform, and Home Assistant's docs say each device should support at least 5 fabrics. See sharing Matter devices across platforms.
- Existing Zigbee or Z-Wave devices. The CSA says bridges let devices using Zigbee or Z-Wave take part in a Matter ecosystem, so you can keep them on their hub or bridge alongside new Matter devices.
- Range on a large property. The Z-Wave Alliance says Z-Wave Long Range reaches up to 1.5 miles in long range mode at full power; that's the Alliance's own figure, not an independent test, and it needs a Long Range-capable hub or adapter such as Home Assistant's Connect ZWA-2.
- Whether you want to avoid an extra hub. Matter over Wi-Fi devices need only a platform Matter controller, while Zigbee and Z-Wave need a hub or adapter — an Echo with a built-in hub, a SmartThings-enabled hub, or a Home Assistant adapter.
- Dual-mode products. Pick the mode that matches your hub — a device in Zigbee mode joins a Zigbee hub, and MatterCheck's platform results apply only to the Matter mode.

Frequently asked questions
Is Matter better than Zigbee?
They do different jobs, and no page we checked makes a measured comparison of battery life, speed or reliability. Matter gives you one control protocol across Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Thread, supported on all five major platforms; the CSA describes Zigbee as a self-healing mesh that's backward compatible with over a billion deployed Zigbee devices. Which suits you depends on your hub and what you already own.
Does Apple Home support Zigbee?
No Apple page we checked says the Home app or an Apple home hub connects Zigbee devices directly. Apple's Matter accessory list includes bridges, so Zigbee devices reach Apple Home through a Matter bridge — IKEA, for example, says its DIRIGERA hub acts as a Matter Bridge for older Zigbee-based devices.
Does Google Home support Zigbee?
No Google page we checked says a Google or Nest hub connects Zigbee devices directly. Google's developer documentation describes devices behind a Matter bridge appearing as normal in Google Home, which is the path Zigbee devices take.
Which Alexa devices have a Zigbee hub?
Amazon's developer documentation lists Echo and eero devices with built-in smart home hubs, including Echo (4th Gen), Echo Hub, Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen), eero Pro 6E and others. The full list is on Amazon's page, and Amazon's help page says you can ask Alexa "Do you have a smart home hub?"
Does Alexa support Z-Wave?
No Amazon page we checked mentions Z-Wave. Amazon's developer documentation covers Zigbee and Matter, but Z-Wave support isn't listed on any page we reviewed. Of the pages we checked, only SmartThings (with a hub that has Z-Wave) and Home Assistant (with a Z-Wave adapter) describe connecting Z-Wave devices directly.
Can Zigbee devices be upgraded to Matter?
The CSA's Matter FAQ says some devices can gain Matter through software updates to the device or, in some cases, the bridge they're connected to — but it depends on the device's hardware and whether the maker chooses to release an update. Otherwise, a Matter bridge is the way to bring Zigbee devices into a Matter ecosystem.
Is Thread the same as Zigbee?
No. Thread uses the same IEEE 802.15.4 radio technology as Zigbee but is IP-based, per the CSA's Matter FAQ and Home Assistant's Thread docs, both linked above. Thread by itself doesn't control devices — Matter or Apple HomeKit runs on top of it.
