Does Alexa support Matter? Which Matter devices work with Alexa

Alexa does support Matter, but with some clear strengths and gaps. You need a Matter-enabled Echo or eero as your Alexa Matter controller, plus a Thread border router for Matter-over-Thread gear. Alexa pairs and controls 16 of the 24 Matter device types MatterCheck tracks, with 2 more partial, and can run routine actions for lights, plugs, thermostats, fans, vacuums and more. The weak spot is using a Matter device to start an Alexa routine: MatterCheck rates that Yes for only 6 types, Partial for 1 and Unknown for 10.

What you need: a Matter-enabled Echo or eero

Matter devices connect to Alexa through a Matter-supported Echo or eero. The Echo or eero acts as the Matter administrator, so you don't need a separate vendor hub. Amazon Alexa Matter support says compatible Echo devices run the Matter 1.5 SDK, a subset of Matter 1.5 and lower device types, over Wi-Fi and Thread.

Amazon's Matter-enabled list includes most Echo speakers and displays from the 2nd Gen onward, including Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Dot with Clock, Echo Flex, Echo Hub, Echo Input, Echo Plus 2nd Gen, Echo Pop, Echo Show models, Echo Spot 2024 and Echo Studio, plus many eero routers including the eero 6, eero Pro, eero Max 7 and eero Outdoor 7. If you use Matter-over-Thread, you also need a Thread border router. The Echo 4th Gen is a Thread 1.1 border router; Thread 1.3 border routers include the Echo Dot Max 2025, Echo Hub, Echo Plus 2nd Gen, Echo Show 21, Echo Show 15 2nd Gen, Echo Show 11 2025, Echo Show 10 3rd Gen, Echo Show 8 3rd Gen 2025, Echo Studio 1st Gen and newer, and many eero models. See Alexa Thread support and the full hub list in Matter hubs and controllers.

Alexa Matter support at a glance

Yes means Alexa can do that field. No means it does not. Partial means some devices or capabilities work, but not all. Unknown means we couldn't confirm it against an official Amazon statement or a dated hands-on test. High confidence requires an official statement plus a dated hands-on test on that platform; Med means the field is credible but thinner on one or both sides.

What works well with Alexa over Matter

Alexa's strongest Matter devices are the ones with confirmed routine starters and simple controls. Matter buttons are a High-confidence yes for starting Alexa routines. Amazon's Alexa SimpleEventSource documentation, modified 2026-09-30, says button events can trigger Alexa routines, and dated native tests — including a 2026-03-14 hands-on by gadget-review-lab with an IKEA BILRESA paired directly to an Echo Show 8 — confirm buttons working in routines. Only single press is reliably exposed, and some multi-button devices expose only one button.

Contact sensors and motion/occupancy sensors are also High-confidence Alexa routine starters. Amazon's contact and motion sensor developer blog says these sensor updates can activate Alexa routines, and native Matter tests support that: NotEnoughTech's 2024-04-11 Aqara P2 test on an Echo Hub, and a 2026-03-31 test by Frank's Easy Tech Corner with an Aqara FP300 paired over Thread to an Echo, using presence and no-motion to start routines. Temperature/humidity and smoke/CO are Med-confidence starters: a 2025-05-01 Matter Alpha Aqara W100 test shows temperature/humidity routines, and a 2026-02-03 Matter Alpha smoke/CO review shows smoke, CO and hardware-fault triggers, but Amazon doesn't document these third-party Matter triggers clearly.

Door locks are also useful on Alexa: a 2025-02-19 owner report on the Nuki developer forum shows Unlocked, Locked and Blocked offered as routine starters (it doesn't say whether the lock was connected over Matter or the maker's Alexa skill), and routines can lock a lock, though unlocking is restricted (see the exceptions below and this Nuki forum thread on Alexa and Matter). Beyond starters, Alexa pairs and controls Matter on/off lights, dimmable and colour lights, colour-temperature lights, plugs, thermostats, window coverings, fans, air purifiers and robot vacuums, and can use them as routine actions. See the per-device guides linked below for the details.

Can a Matter device start an Alexa routine?

This is the biggest gap in Alexa's Matter support. MatterCheck rates routine starters Yes for six types on Alexa: switch/button, contact sensor, motion/occupancy, temperature/humidity, smoke/CO, and door lock. Dimmable/colour lights are Partial: dated reports describe native dimmers or bulbs starting routines on on/off state, including an Inovelli community Alexa routine report, but there's no Amazon statement covering it, and bridged bulbs are not offered as starters.

Ten more types are Unknown on Alexa: on/off lights, plugs/outlets, thermostats, window coverings, fans/air purifiers, robot vacuums, appliances, air quality sensors, colour-temperature lights, and leak sensors. That doesn't mean they all fail — it means Amazon has no page that says which Matter device types can start a routine, so many of these Med ratings exist because of thin documentation rather than known failures. For plugs, owner reports conflict: one owner, 2024-03-09 and 2024-04-11, saw Tapo P125M plugs offered as routine starters; another, 2024-04-11, said Eve Energy and Tapo Matter outlets didn't show up, in SmartThings Community owner reports. For on/off lights there's one 2024-04-11 owner report of native Leviton Matter switches showing as routine starters, but it doesn't separate switches from dimmers. Devices shared from a Matter bridge aren't offered as routine starters in 2025 owner reports.

Light level is a firm No for Alexa routine triggers: Tapo's own compatibility table for its T150 sensor (a maker claim, tested June 2026) marks ambient-light above/below as not available as an Alexa trigger over Matter, as shown in the Tapo T150 third-party support table. If you need a device to start an Alexa routine, buttons, contact sensors and motion sensors are the safe choices. For everything else, test it yourself or share the device to a second platform that has the trigger documented. Amazon's Matter device categories page covers control mappings but not routine starters.

Matter routine actions on Alexa: the exceptions

Most control-capable Matter devices can be Alexa routine actions, but three rows are partial: door locks, window coverings and appliances.

Door locks can be locked by an Alexa routine, but unlocking is off by default per Amazon's Alexa LockController documentation; owner reports (2025-04-07) show only Lock offered in routines, Nuki staff (the lock maker) said the restriction appears to be Amazon's in general, and a routine Custom Action that speaks the unlock phrase plus PIN is a reported workaround. Native Matter shades work as Alexa routine actions: PCMag's 2025 SmartWings Matter-over-Thread test and Wirecutter's 2026 test both describe Alexa routines moving the shades: PCMag's (2025-05-25) lowered a shade when a camera saw motion, and Wirecutter's (2026-05-08) sunrise and sunset routines worked reliably. Bridged Matter covers, however, are still not selectable in the routine builder.

Appliances are partial because room air conditioners and dishwashers are mapped on Amazon's Matter page, while laundry washers, dryers, fridges and ovens aren't clearly mapped and failed to show up in bridge software tests. See the MatterCheck device pages for more.

Matter devices Alexa doesn't support yet

The six types Alexa doesn't pair at all are pumps, water valves, energy meters, speakers, water heaters and pressure sensors. Leak sensors are a partial pairing with no Alexa capability.

Leak sensors are tricky: Amazon's Matter device categories page gives the water leak detector no Alexa capability, though some devices pair with manual codes. A 2026 PCMag Shelly Flood Gen4 review saw a water-detected Alexa routine work, but the Shelly cloud path wasn't excluded, so the native Matter path isn't isolated. Pressure sensors are a High-confidence No: a native Espressif test on an Echo Dot found the pressure endpoint didn't work, and a pressure-only node didn't complete commissioning. Combo sensors can still pair for temperature and humidity, but the pressure reading is dropped.

Energy monitoring is absent: Amazon's Matter category list has no energy meter type and its plug row lists only on/off; a 2025-11-09 MESH Smart Home review of the Tapo P110M found Alexa gives on/off only, without energy monitoring. Pumps, water valves, speakers and water heaters are omitted from Amazon's Matter categories, and Amazon's device templates page shows a cloud WATER_HEATER display category exists only for cloud add-ons, not Matter. A water valve workaround is to expose it as an on/off plug-in unit, but it then appears as an outlet without valve semantics.

How Alexa compares with other Matter platforms

Alexa pairs 16 of the 24 Matter device types MatterCheck tracks, with 2 partial and 6 unsupported. Apple Home pairs 17, Google Home 21, SmartThings 24, and Home Assistant 24. For routine starters, MatterCheck rates Alexa 6 Yes, 1 Partial, 7 No and 10 Unknown. Apple Home has 14 types rated Yes as routine starters, Google Home 17, SmartThings 23, and Home Assistant 24.

Part of that gap is documentation: Alexa is fine for voice, app control and routine actions, but Amazon rarely states which Matter device types can start an Alexa routine in its Alexa Matter support or Matter device categories pages. Home Assistant and SmartThings pair every type we track, and far more of their routine starters are confirmed in our matrix. Alexa's High-confidence count is 4, because many otherwise working fields lack Amazon-published confirmation or a clean dated hands-on. See the full comparison in the MatterCheck matrix, or the same 24-row check for Google Home and Apple Home in our Google Home Matter guide and Apple Home Matter guide, or put all five platforms side by side in our Matter platform comparison.

Use Alexa alongside another platform

If a device is already paired in Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings or Home Assistant, you can share it to Alexa using Matter multi-admin. Generate a temporary pairing code in the app the device is already in — the printed QR or setup code is only for first setup or after a reset. In the Alexa app, go to Devices, choose the device, then Other Assistants and Apps, then Add another, and enter the 11-digit code. The code is valid for 15 minutes. Amazon's help page for sharing a Matter device and commissioning best practices list "already commissioned" and "ready to pair" as common errors when adding to a new admin. For the full walkthrough, see Matter multi-admin sharing.

How we checked

Values come from the MatterCheck matrix v1.14, checked through 2026-10-19. Alexa cells were last checked between 2026-10-17 and 2026-10-19. High confidence requires an official statement covering the feature plus a dated hands-on test on that platform; Med means the field is credible but lacks one side of that bar or has conflicting evidence.
