Which smart home platforms support Matter light bulbs?

Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant all pair with and control Matter on/off, dimmable-and-colour, and tunable-white bulbs, and all five can switch them as an automation action. Alexa is the weak spot: whether a Matter bulb can start an Alexa routine isn't settled, and all three Alexa rows are Med. Google Home's tunable-white row is also Med because we found no dated test that shows the white tone actually changing there.

Three kinds of Matter light

Every Matter light includes on/off. A colour bulb adds an Extended Color Light type (0x010D) and a colour picker. A tunable-white bulb uses Color Temperature Light (0x010C) to change the white tone from warm to cool. For this guide we only count a test as proof when it shows the right behaviour: colour rows need a colour-capable bulb changed to a colour, and tunable-white rows need a test that shows the white tone actually changing.

Matter bulbs on Apple Home (HomeKit)

Apple Home pairs, controls and automates all three light rows. The baseline version is iOS 16.1, and a HomePod or Apple TV is recommended as a hub for remote access and full automations. Thread bulbs need a Thread border router.

For on/off and colour, a 2026-08-03 homekit.reviews hands-on added Linkind colour Matter bulbs straight into Apple Home and set colour from Apple Home; one porch bulb turns on at dusk and off at dawn by an automation every day. For tunable white and Adaptive Lighting, a 2026-02-02 HomeKit News review of IKEA KAJPLATS over Matter showed brightness, colour-temperature picker and swatches, and Adaptive Lighting enabled automatically. Caveat: TP-Link maker notes say a Siri colour-temperature voice command wrongly sends Power Off on its L730 downlight, which TP-Link calls an Apple-side bug.

Matter bulbs on Google Home

Google's Matter device list includes On/Off, Dimmable, Color Temperature and Extended Color Light. Google's help lists on/off and brightness as automation starters and actions, plus a set-colour action. A Google/Nest Matter hub is required, and Thread bulbs need a Thread border router.

Colour and on/off support is High. A 2023-09-28 TechRadar hands-on paired a Nanoleaf Matter Essentials colour bulb to a Nest Hub 2, switched it off and on, changed colour, and used it in Google Home automations. A 2025-11-30 Smart Home Centre hands-on added IKEA KAJPLATS bulbs directly to Google Home and controlled them like other lights. Tunable white is only Med because that KAJPLATS report doesn't describe a white-tone change happening in Google Home.

Caveats: reports from April 2026 described a Google Home bug stopping colour changes on some bulbs, with Google saying a fix was rolling out on 2026-10-07; the brands named mostly connect through their own cloud rather than Matter. Google help also says some light colour adjustments are limited in the automation editor, and Google added voice colour-temperature control on 2026-08-20.

Matter bulbs on Alexa: can a light start a routine?

Amazon Alexa pairs with and controls Matter bulbs, and lights work as routine actions. A 2026-02-22 T3 review paired an IKEA KAJPLATS tunable-white bulb to an Echo Show 8 and used routines as actions, such as turning it on at sunset or switching it on from motion sensors.

Starting a routine from a Matter bulb is less clear. Amazon's Matter pages don't say that lights can start routines. A few owners have seen lights or light switches paired directly to an Echo offered as routine starters, but only on/off state was reported, not brightness or colour. Lights shared from a Matter bridge are not offered as starters. So treat "this bulb turning on starts an Alexa routine" as not guaranteed. That's why Alexa's light-starts-automation values are Unknown for on/off, Partial for colour, and Unknown for tunable white.

Matter bulbs on SmartThings

SmartThings pairs, controls and automates all three rows with High confidence. A SmartThings-compatible hub is required, and Thread bulbs need a Thread border router.

Owner reports are specific. In a 2026-01-08 SmartThings Community report, an owner set an IKEA KAJPLATS tunable-white bulb to 2200, 2700 and 6500 K from SmartThings and compared the results. Since a 2026-02-24 driver update, routines can step brightness and colour temperature. A 2026-07-04 report confirmed a routine turning a KAJPLATS bulb on. Colour support was verified in a 2025-10-21 How-To Geek hands-on with a Cync Full Color Matter bulb added by its Matter code to SmartThings. Caveats: owners reported KAJPLATS lamps turning off and on after hub firmware 0.62.7 on 2026-09-12, and TP-Link maker notes say SmartThings may show a colour picker that does nothing on the L730 downlight.

Matter bulbs on Home Assistant

Home Assistant is High on all three rows. You need the Home Assistant Matter Server, and Thread bulbs need a Thread border router.

chrissmart.de added an IKEA KAJPLATS bulb to Home Assistant by Matter QR on 2026-08-12, with dimming and colour temperature, and switched it on and off from two button automations. For colour, an HA Community report from 2026-01-05 said picking colours on the colour wheel worked reliably one light at a time on Govee Matter downlights. Caveats: some white-only KAJPLATS bulbs show a colour wheel, and moving it only changes the white tone, from an HA issue dated 2026-03-12. TP-Link maker notes say the L730 can't reach its 2700 K minimum in HA. Owners also report Govee scenes setting colour and brightness together are hit or miss, and some Linkind Matter bulbs show no colour controls in HA while others do.

Thread or Wi-Fi Matter bulbs?

Thread bulbs such as Nanoleaf Essentials, IKEA KAJPLATS and Aqara LED Bulb T2 need a Thread border router on your network. Wi-Fi Matter bulbs such as WiZ, Tapo, Linkind, GE Cync and Govee don't need a Thread border router, but they still need a Matter controller in each platform app. See Matter hubs and controllers for the differences.

Which platform is best for Matter lights?

From the matrix, Apple Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant are High on all three rows. Google Home is High for on/off and colour, with tunable white still Med because the white-tone change hasn't been demonstrated in a dated hands-on. Alexa is fine for voice control, app control and routine actions, but don't count on a bulb starting a routine. Brand-app extras such as scenes, effects and music sync generally stay in the maker's app and don't come through Matter.

Matter also lets you share a bulb with more than one platform, so you can pair once and use it in Apple Home and Home Assistant, for example. See Matter multi-admin. If you want a light to start automations reliably, a motion sensor is the usual starter; see Matter motion sensor support and Matter smart plug support.

Matter bulbs and light strips we track

We don't rank products or name a single best Matter bulb. This is the list we track, with the transport and light type, plus a short note from our records.

Product-level automation tests are mostly absent in our records beyond the type-level tests named above. Maker claims are maker claims, not independent verification.

How we checked

These values come from the MatterCheck matrix v1.14. Cells were last checked 2026-10-19, except Alexa on/off and tunable white, last checked 2026-10-18, and Alexa colour, last checked 2026-10-17. High confidence needs an official statement plus a dated hands-on test on that platform. Colour rows need a test that changes colour on a colour bulb, and tunable-white rows need a test that changes the white tone. See the methodology page and the live rows for on/off lights, colour lights and tunable white lights.
