Which smart home platforms support Matter blinds and shades?

All five major Matter platforms we track pair with and control Matter blinds and shades: Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant. You can use a blind or shade as an automation action to open or close it on all five, but on Alexa we've only seen that for shades added directly to an Echo, not for covers shared from a Matter bridge, which makes Alexa the weak spot and the only Med-confidence cell. Every covering we track runs on Thread, so a Thread border router is part of the setup.

Matter blinds on Apple Home (HomeKit)

Apple Home pairs and controls blinds and shades over Matter since iOS 16.1, and blinds and shades are on Apple's Matter device list. In a 2026-04-23 HomeKit News hands-on, Bringnox Matter-over-Thread roller blinds paired first time and showed a position slider and battery level, though with no obstruction status and a lagging charging state. A 2026-07-20 review of Kincmo blinds found the same open/close position slider, plus a tilt-degrees slider in settings that does nothing on roller blinds. Apple's official automation wording says a home automation can start when an accessory "turns on or opens" (Apple's automation help), which is why we list the shade as a possible starter, but no independent test of a Matter shade starting an Apple Home automation was found. As an action, Wirecutter's 2026-05-08 smart blinds review found SmartWings Matter shades reliably controlled by automations in Apple Home.

Matter blinds and shades on Google Home

Google Home lists Window Covering on its supported Matter devices page. Google's automation documentation specifically names "Window coverings are opened or closed" as a starter and condition, and "Open or close window coverings" as an action (Google Home Help). A 2026-10-15 SmartHomeScene hands-on added five Graywind Matter-over-Thread Roman shades to Google Home by scanning each Matter QR, and found open/close, exact-position slider and battery level. Wirecutter 2026-05-08 found SmartWings shade automations reliable through a Nest Hub Max. An older early-2025 test couldn't use a shade in a Google Home automation, but that is superseded by the Wirecutter test. The starter is based on Google's own list; we didn't find a test of a Matter shade starting a Google Home automation.

Matter blinds on Alexa: can a routine open or close them?

Alexa pairs and controls Matter blinds and shades; Amazon maps them to Window Covering and RangeController open/close on its Matter categories page. A shade added directly to an Echo works as a routine action: PCMag 2025-05-25 scanned a SmartWings Matter code in the Alexa app and found a camera-motion routine lowering the shade, and Wirecutter 2026-05-08 used Alexa+ sunrise/sunset routines with SmartWings shades on an Echo Dot Max. But shades shared from a Matter bridge are not listed in Alexa's routine builder, so the action stays Partial. As a trigger, it's Unknown: Amazon's pages say nothing about a blind opening or closing starting a routine, and we found no test of that. The cell is Med confidence partly because of that unknown trigger. There's also a 2026-02-15 Hubitat community report of flaky direct control of Eve MotionBlinds on an Echo Hub, with one shade dropping out of the Alexa app.

Matter blinds on SmartThings

SmartThings lists Window Covering as a supported Matter device on its partners Matter page, and its Matter window-covering driver supports open/close, pause, level, tilt, presets and battery. SmartThings' routines help allows devices to be used as conditions and actions. Mighty Gadget 2024-08-30 paired a SmartWings Matter shade directly to a SmartThings hub and used a routine that closes the blinds when a Hue switch is held; a 2025 MESH test also found pause and a preset position on SmartThings. The trigger rests on SmartThings' Window Covering listing and routines language, but no independent test of a Matter shade starting a SmartThings routine was found. One caveat: in June 2026, SmartWings shades stayed on "opening" or "closing" after app commands so an open or closed trigger could miss; a driver fix was confirmed by SmartThings staff on 2026-07-26.

Matter blinds on Home Assistant

Home Assistant maps Matter window coverings to the cover domain, and its Cover documentation lists blind, shade, curtain, awning and shutter opened/closed triggers, matching conditions, and open, close, set position, stop and tilt actions. SmartHomeScene 2024-09-21 paired SmartWings Matter-over-Thread motors and found HA commands reliable with about 0.5 s wake delay. Mighty Gadget shared a SmartWings shade from SmartThings to Home Assistant and used a 5:25 automation to open it if closed. No test of a shade's state starting an HA automation was found; the trigger rests on Home Assistant's Matter integration and Cover docs.

Lift, tilt and position: what Matter carries

Every platform list we checked has one Window Covering device type; there isn't a separate lift device type. Position and tilt are features of the single Matter Window Covering cluster, so whether tilt appears depends on the device and platform. In practice, the Zemismart MTP1 has lift and position-aware lift but no tilt according to Matter Survey telemetry. SmartWings' WM25LM motor listing includes lift and tilt, but tilt exposure may vary by controller. Battery level is commonly shown across platforms. Eve-app schedules and calibration may go beyond what the Matter cluster itself carries. In Apple Home, HomeKit News saw a tilt slider on roller blinds that did nothing, a useful reminder that an exposed slider isn't the same as a working tilt feature.

Which platform is best for Matter blinds?

Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant are all High-confidence cells with pair, control, action and documented trigger support. Alexa works for voice and app open/close, and for routines when the shade is added directly to an Echo, but its cell is Med confidence because the trigger is Unknown and bridged shades aren't offered as routine actions. For most people, the best platform is the one where you already own a compatible hub and a Thread border router, because every covering we track is Thread. Matter multi-admin also means you can share one shade across two controllers: Mighty Gadget shared a SmartWings shade from SmartThings to Home Assistant and used routines and automations on both. See our multi-admin guide, Thread border router guide, and the live window covering page. If you want a trigger tied to a window, a Matter contact sensor can be a useful starter alongside the shade itself; see the contact sensor support guide and motion sensor support guide.

Matter blinds and shade motors we track

We don't rank products or pick a "best" blind. This is the list we track, with the specific verified difference that matters most for each.

None of these products had a product-level automation test in our records beyond the type-level tests named above.

How we checked

These values come from the MatterCheck matrix v1.14, with data checked through 2026-10-19. A High confidence cell needs an official platform statement plus a dated hands-on test on that platform; a cell with an Unknown field can't be High unless an official statement covers that field, which is why Alexa is Med. We don't rank devices, and maker compatibility pages are treated as claims until a dated test verifies them. See our methodology, window covering page, multi-admin guide and hub guide.
