Editorial policy

How MatterCheck's content is sourced, scored, kept independent, and corrected.

What we publish

MatterCheck is a living, documentation-based guide to Matter device support, organised by device type rather than by brand. The core of the site is a matrix of 27 Matter device types across seven platforms (Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant, Homey, and Hubitat), with four fields per cell: pairs, control, automation_trigger and automation_action. Around the matrix we publish type pages, SKU pages, hub guides, buying guides and explainers. Everything is grounded in the matrix data and in the cited sources behind each cell.

Sourcing and evidence standards

Every Yes, No or Partial rating must trace to a cited URL. We prefer official platform documentation first, then reproducible public tests, then independent community reports. Confidence follows the rules in the methodology: High requires an official platform statement covering the field plus a dated, independent, native-Matter-path hands-on test with video or screenshot proof. The full standard for third-party evidence is on the evidence standard page.

Two principles are non-negotiable across the site:

Independence and conflicts of interest

MatterCheck is editorially independent of the platforms and device makers it covers. We do not sell sponsored placements or "recommended" spots, and no maker or platform can pay to change a rating. This is a standing policy, not a per-article decision.

If the site earns money, it is through clearly disclosed means such as advertising and affiliate links. Affiliate links never change what we publish or how we rate a product. Where we use them, they are disclosed on the affiliate disclosure page and in the surrounding content.

If a contributor has a personal or financial relationship with a maker or platform relevant to something they are writing, that relationship must be disclosed and, where it could affect the result, the contributor is recused from that rating.

Corrections

Matter support changes with software updates, and we make mistakes. We track changes publicly:

To report an error, a stale cell, or a new third-party test, use the corrections and submissions form (linked from the footer once live), or email [email protected].

Review and freshness

Cells are re-verified on a weekly loop, and any cell whose last_checked date is more than 60 days old is flagged stale until it is re-verified. Before publishing, pages pass automated structure and data-validation checks, source-link liveness checks, and a mobile render check. The data itself is plain text with https-only URLs, and the site escapes every value before rendering.
