Google Nest and Matter: which thermostats work, hubs and setup

Two Google Nest thermostats support Matter: the Nest Thermostat (2020) and the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen). Both connect over Wi-Fi, not Thread, so you do not need a Thread border router for the thermostats themselves, but you still need a Matter hub for each platform you want to use. Setup starts in the Google Home app, then you share the thermostat to Apple Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant using a pairing code.

This guide is based on Connectivity Standards Alliance certification pages, Google Store and Google Help pages, Apple and Home Assistant documentation, and a 2023 Verge how-to. Certification lists and platform support can change; check the linked sources for current details.

Which Nest thermostats have Matter

MatterCheck tracks 2 Google Nest products out of 393 products. Its results are organised by device type and platform, not by tests of specific Nest products. The two Matter-certified Nest thermostats are:

The Nest Thermostat E and Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) do not support Matter. A 2023 Verge guide said the Nest Learning Thermostat did not support Matter; that guide predates the 4th gen and applies only to the 3rd gen and Thermostat E. The Verge (2023 how-to)

Google's own specs say the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) "Works with Google Home and Matter" and that installation and setup require the Google Home app. Google's Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) specs help page The Google Store lists the Nest Thermostat (2020) as "Matter certified". You can check a device's certification details yourself using the Matter certified how-to-check guide, or browse all tracked products on the SKU list.

Do Nest thermostats need a Thread border router

No. Both Matter Nest thermostats use Wi-Fi as their Matter transport, not Thread. the CSA's Nest Thermostat page the CSA's Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) page (2025 certificate) A Thread border router is only needed for Thread-based Matter devices. For more on the difference, see the Thread vs Wi-Fi guide.

Which Google Nest devices are Matter hubs and Thread border routers

Google divides its Matter hubs into two groups. Wi-Fi-only hubs support Matter over Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi and Thread hubs also act as Thread border routers for Thread devices. Google's Prepare your smart home for Matter page

Google also states that IPv6 must be enabled on your home Wi-Fi network for Matter to work properly, including hand-off between Thread and Wi-Fi devices. Google's Prepare your smart home for Matter page See the hubs and Thread border routers guide and the IPv6 and VLAN setup guide for more.

Adding a Nest thermostat to Apple Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant

The general flow is the same across platforms. First set up the thermostat in the Google Home app. Then open the thermostat's settings in Google Home, tap "Linked Matter apps & services", tap "Link apps & service", and copy the pairing code that appears. Open the target platform's app and add the accessory using that code. The Verge (2023 how-to) This is Matter multi-admin sharing; see the multi-admin sharing guide for the underlying concept.

Apple Home

In the Apple Home app, tap +, choose Add Accessory, then tap "more options" and select Google Nest Thermostat from the nearby accessories list. If it does not appear, tap My Accessory isn't Shown Here and enter the pairing code manually. The Verge (2023 how-to) Apple says an iPhone on iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub, and that iPhone 15 Pro and later can also control Thread accessories without one, but Apple still recommends setting up a home hub. This thermostat uses Wi-Fi, so the Thread part does not apply to it. Apple's Matter page Since the Nest thermostats are Wi-Fi, no Apple Thread border router is needed for them. See the Apple Home Matter guide.

Amazon Alexa

The Verge's 2023 guide says you can add the Nest Thermostat to Amazon Alexa using the same Google Home pairing-code flow, and that you need a Matter controller from that platform, such as an Amazon Echo smart speaker. The Verge (2023 how-to) MatterCheck's platform data says a Matter-enabled Echo or eero hub is required for Alexa. See the Alexa Matter guide.

SmartThings

The Verge guide says Samsung SmartThings is also supported through the same Google Home pairing-code flow, and that you need a Matter controller such as a Samsung SmartThings Hub. The Verge (2023 how-to) MatterCheck's platform data says a SmartThings-compatible hub is required. See the SmartThings Matter guide.

Home Assistant

Home Assistant runs its own Matter controller through the Matter Server app. You can share a device from another Matter controller such as Google Home into Home Assistant. Home Assistant's Matter docs MatterCheck's platform data says the Home Assistant Matter Server is required, with Home Assistant OS recommended. No source in this set gives Nest-specific Home Assistant steps beyond the general multi-admin sharing flow. See the Home Assistant Matter guide.

What works over Matter and what stays in Google Home

Matter exposes a subset of thermostat features. For the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), Google's specs say you can control it with Google Home and other Matter-enabled apps and voice assistants. Google's Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) specs help page For the Nest Thermostat (2020), the Google Store says it is Matter certified and can be controlled with Google Home and other Matter platforms, with Hey Google and Alexa voice support. Google Store Nest Thermostat specs

In MatterCheck's thermostat matrix, Apple Home and Amazon Alexa list automation trigger as Unknown for thermostats, while automation action is supported. Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant list both trigger and action as supported. See the Matter thermostat support guide for the full device-type matrix.

What MatterCheck's data says for thermostats

Both Nest thermostats are filed under the Matter thermostat device type. The table shows MatterCheck's results for that device type on each platform.

MatterCheck's results for the Matter thermostat device type (Matter thermostat page), per device type and platform, not a test of Google Nest products.

A Nest thermostat shared out of Google Home shows up in other apps as a standard Matter thermostat, so the controls you get there are the ones in this row rather than everything the Nest app offers. In The Verge's December 2024 review of the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), the thermostat was shared into Apple Home and Alexa over Matter and the controls there were limited to temperature and mode, and the Bluetooth room sensors were not available over Matter. Hubitat is Unknown in every column because MatterCheck has no source for thermostats on that platform yet.

If linking fails

If the thermostat does not appear as a nearby accessory, enter the pairing code manually in the target app. The Verge (2023 how-to) For pairing problems, see the device not pairing guide. If you have lost the setup code, see the lost setup code guide.

How we checked

This page was checked against CSA certified product pages, Google Store and Google Help pages, Apple and Home Assistant documentation and The Verge, all fetched on 27 October 2026.
