Which smart home platforms support Matter smoke and CO alarms?
MatterCheck's current matrix says all five tracked platforms can pair a Matter smoke and CO alarm and use its smoke or CO state to start an automation. None can use the alarm as an automation action, so you can't turn one on or off from a scene. Amazon Alexa's in-app control/status is Partial. Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant are High confidence; Apple Home and Amazon Alexa are Medium confidence because their official platform documents still don't name the full behavior.
| Platform | Pairs | Control / status | Starts an automation | Automation action | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | Med |
| Google Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | High |
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | Partial | Yes | No | Med |
| SmartThings | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | High |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | High |
Matter smoke alarms on Apple Home (HomeKit)
Current value: Yes / Yes / Yes / No at Medium confidence. Apple's own Matter accessory list, re-read 2026-10-18 and still unchanged from its May 7, 2026 publication, omits smoke/CO and air quality. That official gap is the main reason the row is Medium rather than High. Matter Alpha says smoke/CO support arrived in iOS/iPadOS 18.4, though Apple's release notes don't name it.
Hands-on evidence is stronger. MESH Smart Home's 2025-06-26 Sensereo MS-1 review shows the alarm in Apple Home with a Smoke Detected state and an Add Automation option. HomeKit News's 2026-05-21 MSC-1 review shows separate smoke and CO sensors under Alarm Sensors, with CO level and battery. An Apple Home hub is recommended and required for remote access and full automations; Thread alarms also need a home hub that is a Thread border router. The current support is Matter-route support; HomeKit-native smoke alarms may still work outside Matter.
Matter smoke and CO alarms on Google Home
Current value: Yes / Yes / Yes / No at High confidence. Google's Matter device list includes Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Detector rows, and the Google Home app's automation editor lists "Smoke detector detects smoke" and "Detected carbon monoxide" starters.
The independent device evidence is thinner. MESH Smart Home's 2026-04-26 MSC-1 review shared the alarm into Google Home and found smoke status, hardware status and battery, with smoke and CO notifications arriving, but no CO status or CO level in the app. Matter Alpha's 2026-02-03 MSC-1 review called Google Home the weakest of the six platforms for this alarm, with battery and hardware status often unavailable. We did not find a published test of a Matter alarm actually starting a Google Home automation. Hub: a Google/Nest Matter hub is required, plus a Thread border router for Thread alarms.
Matter smoke alarms on Alexa: alerts vs routines
Current value: Yes / Partial / Yes / No at Medium confidence. Alexa pairs a Matter smoke/CO alarm directly through a Matter-enabled Echo or eero hub, and independent reports show alarms can start routines. Matter Alpha's 2026-02-03 MSC-1 review says Alexa offers automation triggers for smoke level, CO level and hardware fault. A SmartThings Community owner report from January 2026 found a Heiman Matter CO sensor paired directly to an Echo exposed triggers for CO level, battery, hardware failure and end of life.
Control/status is only Partial because independent reviews show Alexa displays only basic Normal, Warning and Severe smoke and CO states, while other platforms show more detail. BreatheSafeAir's 2026-06-26 MSC-1 review and 2026-10-13 MS-1 review both found Alexa surfaces only those three basic states, and MESH's 2026-04-26 MSC-1 review confirms the same. Separately, the whole row is Medium because Amazon's official Matter device categories page maps Smoke CO alarm only to TemperatureSensor plus ProactiveNotificationSource (Echo announcements, not a documented Routines starter), and no Amazon page states smoke/CO routine starters. The trigger rests on Matter Alpha's 2026-02-03 review and one community owner report from 2026-01-28. Routines also need the alarm paired directly to an Echo or eero Thread border router; the SmartThings cloud-link route exposes far less.
Matter smoke alarms on SmartThings
Current value: Yes / Yes / Yes / No at High confidence. SmartThings' Matter partners page lists Smoke & CO Alarm under Matter Sensors. Matter Alpha's 2026-02-03 MSC-1 review says SmartThings shows smoke and CO detection states, hardware status and battery, and can trigger automations based on alarm conditions.
MESH Smart Home's 2026-04-26 MSC-1 review added the alarm to an Aeotec SmartThings hub and saw battery, smoke status, CO status, CO concentration and hardware problem. It also noted the smoke-sensitivity setting does not actually change the alarm. A SmartThings Community owner report from January 2026 found a Heiman Matter CO alarm worked as a CO sensor and was included in Home Monitor smoke monitoring. Hub: a SmartThings-compatible hub is required; Thread alarms also need a Thread border router.
Matter smoke and CO alarms on Home Assistant
Current value: Yes / Yes / Yes / No at High confidence. Home Assistant's Matter integration says devices are added by Matter QR and supports binary sensors, and its Heiman page lists certified Matter smoke alarms and CO alarms. SmartHomeScene's 2026-06-11 Heiman review found smoke, battery, fault, end-of-life, muted and self-test entities in Home Assistant, with immediate alerts.
raspberry.tips' 2026-09-20 hands-on used Sensereo smoke/CO alarms as automation starters for critical phone alerts and ran other detectors' self-tests. Home Assistant's automation editor has dedicated Smoke detected and Carbon monoxide detected triggers, with CO level threshold triggers. HA also shows a self-test button an automation can press, but we still list automation action as No for alarms while we decide whether that counts. Hub: use the Home Assistant Matter Server; HA OS is recommended, and Thread alarms need a Thread border router.
What Matter does for a smoke or CO alarm, and what it doesn't
Matter turns a smoke or CO alarm into a reporting sensor. The alarm publishes its detected state (smoke, carbon monoxide, or normal) and, depending on the platform and device, CO level, battery and hardware fault. Any supported platform can use that state as an automation starter, which is what matters for "when smoke is detected, turn on the lights." What Matter does not do here is make the alarm an output: none of the platforms in this matrix allows a smoke/CO alarm as an automation action, so you can't switch it on or off from a scene or routine. That isn't a missing feature; an alarm is a sensor, not an actuator. App alerts and automations are a convenience on top of the alarm's own siren, not a replacement for it, and local fire-safety rules and the alarm maker's instructions still apply.
Which platform is best for a Matter smoke alarm?
Honestly, there isn't a single best platform; it depends on which ecosystem you already run. If your goal is a basic "smoke detected, turn on lights" automation, all five platforms support pairing and alarm-state triggers, with the difference being confidence. Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant are High confidence. Apple Home works in the hands-on tests we track, but Apple's own published Matter list still omits smoke/CO, so it's Medium. Alexa can pair and, based on two independent reports, can start routines from alarm state, but Amazon's official documents don't name that trigger and control/status is only Partial, making it Medium. MESH and Matter Alpha (2026) found Home Assistant the most complete platform for the Sensereo MSC-1, and HA shows smoke, battery, fault, end-of-life and self-test entities. SmartThings is a strong High-confidence option if you don't want to run HA. Matter's multi-admin support means one alarm can be paired into more than one ecosystem, which can help when you want your primary platform plus a backup or testing setup; see our multi-admin page.
Matter smoke and CO alarms we track
MatterCheck doesn't rank alarms or recommend a "best" one; we track models and what's verified. The alarms we track include:
- Heiman Smart Smoke Alarm S1-M: Matter over Thread smoke sensor; needs Thread border router. It appears in 2026 Matter buying guides and MatterCatalog, and has a CSA Matter-over-Thread plus Bluetooth LE certification. We haven't confirmed from a datasheet whether it also senses CO.
- Sensereo MSC-1 Smoke & CO Alarm: Matter over Thread smoke and CO combo with live CO ppm LCD; needs Thread border router. True smoke+CO with photoelectric and electrochemical sensors. EN 14604 and EN 50291 certified for EU; Sensereo states UL 217/2034 for US is still in development.
- Aroha Home Smoke Detector SM1M: Matter over Thread smoke-only alarm; needs Thread border router. Works with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant and IKEA Home smart per the maker, but no per-platform tests published.
- Sensereo MS-1 Matter Smoke Alarm: Matter over Thread smoke-only alarm; needs Thread border router. Maker names Apple Home, SmartThings, Home Assistant and Homey support, but not Google Home or Alexa.
- ABUS PREFIRA SMART SX3050M: Matter over Thread smoke alarm; needs Thread border router. Optical smoke per EN 14604; EU retail availability confirmed. No SKU-level automation test published.
We also checked the Siterwell GS886A-MTAT and left it out because the Matter-certified model exists in the CSA database, but Siterwell's store currently lists a non-Matter version and we couldn't confirm a Matter retail cart.
How we checked
Values come from MatterCheck matrix v1.14, with every cell last checked on 2026-10-18 or 2026-10-19. Confidence follows our methodology: High needs an official statement plus a dated hands-on test on that platform. See our methodology, smoke and CO alarm page, multi-admin page and hubs page for more detail.
Last reviewed 2026-10-19. Platform support changes with app and firmware updates; check the live smoke and CO alarm page for the current cell values.
