Which smart home platforms support Matter water shut-off valves?

Only SmartThings and Home Assistant accept a device that declares the Matter Water Valve type, with open/close control, valve state as an automation starter and the valve as an automation action — both at Med confidence. Apple Home rejects the Water Valve type (No, High confidence); Google Home and Alexa are also No, at Med. Many valves sold as "Matter" — including the EcoNet Bulldog — are certified as a plug type instead, so they work more widely but only as a plain on/off tile.

Matter water valve support at a glance

This guide uses "pairs" to mean the platform accepts a device that declares the Matter Water Valve device type over Matter. "Control" means open/close and valve state in the app. "Starts an automation" means valve state can start an automation. "Automation action" means an automation, such as a leak-detected automation, can open or close the valve.

The Matter Water Valve type is 0x0042 with the Valve Configuration and Control cluster 0x0081, added in Matter 1.3. Very few native Water Valve products exist: MatterCheck found only one primary Water Valve certification, and it has no consumer buy path. Confidence is High only when an official statement covers the feature and there is a dated hands-on test of the device type on that platform; otherwise it stays Med.

Matter water valves on Apple Home (HomeKit)

MatterCheck rates Apple Home as No for pairing, control, valve state as an automation starter, and valve as an automation action. That No is High confidence because it rests on explicit dated negatives, not just an omission from a list. In Apple Developer Forums threads, a Matter endpoint declaring 0x0042 Water Valve is rejected as "not supported" and the accessory isn't created, while the same hardware as a 0x010A plug is created and works (Apple Developer Forums Matter discussions). An Espressif staff reply on 2025-11-20 said Apple Home had not supported the Matter Valve device type yet (esp-matter issue 1587). A connectedhomeip request for Water Valve support has been open since 2025-09-17 and was last active 2026-06-19 with no answer (connectedhomeip issue 41022).

A community Matter bridge project's discussion reports that Apple's iOS 26 Matter-to-HomeKit map has no 0x0042 and that iOS 27 beta 3 additions do not add it, based on extracts dated 2026-07-11/12 (community bridge project discussion 410). Apple's Matter accessories page (published May 07, 2026) and the Works with Apple Home categories also omit valves, and WWDC26 (2026-06-08) previewed no new Matter categories. The practical workaround is a valve that is certified or exposed as an On/Off Plug-in Unit; it appears as an outlet tile with no valve semantics. For Apple Home, a HomePod or Apple TV is recommended for remote access and automations, and Thread valves need a Thread-enabled Apple hub or border router.

Matter water valves on Google Home

MatterCheck rates Google Home as No for pairing, control, automation starter, and automation action, at Med confidence. Google's developer Supported device types list, updated 2026-10-08, has no Water Valve row and says unlisted types are "not officially supported" — but that same table also omits water leak sensors, which Google Home does support, so the omission isn't proof by itself (Google supported device types). Google's Supported Matter clusters page, updated 2026-10-13, maps Valve Configuration and Control to OpenClose (Google supported Matter clusters). The consumer automation help lists only generic on/off starters and actions, with no valve wording (Google Home automation starters and actions).

The only certified Matter valve's maker claims Google Home works, but MatterCheck treats that as a maker claim and doesn't count it (Grimsholm maker page). Google's developer Home APIs list Water Valve 0x0042, but that's developer-only and not counted for the consumer app. No independent native test was found, and Google's release notes are silent. You need a Google/Nest Matter hub, plus a Thread border router for Thread valves.

Matter water valves on Alexa

MatterCheck rates Alexa as No for pairing, control, valve state as an automation starter, and valve as an automation action, at Med confidence. Water Valve is absent from Amazon's supported Matter device categories page, and Amazon's What's New entries through August 2026 add no new Matter categories — none have been added since November 2024 (Amazon Alexa What's New). Two independent bridged tests report the same explicit negative: a Matter bridge project's README has shown Alexa failing Water Valve since 2026-01-31 (Matter bridge project README), and a community Matter bridge project issue from 2026-07-13/14 found four WaterValve endpoints weren't recognized while the same valves as On/Off Plug-in Unit worked; the maintainer wrote that Alexa "doesn't know the WaterValve type at all" (community bridge project issue 65).

Confidence stays Med instead of High because no native 0x0042 valve has been tested with Alexa — bridged and native behavior can differ. A Matter-enabled Echo or eero hub is required. The workaround is a valve certified or exposed as a plug, which shows as an outlet with no valve semantics.

Matter water valves on SmartThings

SmartThings accepts the native Water Valve type. MatterCheck rates pairing, control, valve state as an automation starter, and valve as an automation action all Yes, at Med confidence. SmartThings lists Water Valve (under Matter plugs and actuators, as shutoff valves) on its Matter partners page, live as of 2026-10-17 (SmartThings Matter partners page). The Matter switch Edge driver handles it in fingerprints (SmartThings matter-switch Edge driver fingerprints). Samsung has also added adjacent types such as Matter Irrigation System and Soil Sensor in 2026, but those aren't separate MatterCheck device types (SmartThings hub 0.61.6 release notes).

Confidence is Med rather than High because, while the official listing and driver code are clear, only a handful of native Matter valves are sold and MatterCheck found no SmartThings owner test of one (Matter Alpha shutoff-valve explainer). A SmartThings-compatible hub is required.

Matter water valves in Home Assistant

Home Assistant also accepts the native Water Valve type. MatterCheck rates pairing, control, valve state as an automation starter, and valve as an automation action as Yes, at Med confidence. The Home Assistant Matter integration lists Valve as a category (open/close), and MatterCheck rates full automation support (Home Assistant Matter integration). A developer report on 2025-08-19 found closing a Matter water valve sent an invalid command; the fix was tested 2025-08-20 and released in Home Assistant 2025.8 (Home Assistant water valve issue). That evidence is a developer test device, not a consumer product test.

Confidence is Med because MatterCheck found no published Home Assistant test of a consumer valve such as Tevinge or JINK as of 2026-10-18; only a handful of native Matter valves are sold (Matter Alpha shutoff-valve explainer). You need the Home Assistant Matter Server, with HA OS recommended, and a Thread border router for Thread valves.

Water Valve type vs valves that show up as a plug

Some water valves are certified or exposed as an On/Off Plug-in Unit instead of the Water Valve type. The EcoNet Bulldog EVC400-MW is CSA certified, but its primary device type is On/Off Plug-in Unit, certified 2025-01-17. For that path, use MatterCheck's plug/outlet values, not the water valve values: pairing, control, and automation action are Yes on Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant. Plug state as an automation starter is Yes on all but Alexa, where it's Unknown. Confidence is High everywhere except Alexa, which is Med.

The trade-off is that there's no open/closed wording, valve state, or valve-specific features. Developer reports on Apple Home and a bridged Alexa test (community bridge project issue 65) both saw the plug version work when the Water Valve version didn't. Matter Alpha's product page lists the Tevinge valve as an "On/Off Light Switch" — possibly a device-type mislabel, and MatterCheck hasn't confirmed which type it declares. If you use a plug-type valve, test which tile state means closed before relying on it in an automation. See the Matter smart plug support guide and the live water valve page.

Automatic water shut-off with a Matter leak sensor

A leak-triggered shut-off needs the leak sensor as an automation starter and the valve as an automation action on the same platform. MatterCheck rates a Matter leak sensor's detected state as an automation starter Yes on Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, and Home Assistant — High confidence on SmartThings and Home Assistant, Med on Apple Home and Google Home. Alexa is Unknown, at Med.

A native Water Valve as the automation action is Yes only on SmartThings and Home Assistant. On Apple Home and Google Home, the only route is a valve that appears as a plug, because the plug path has automation action Yes on those platforms. MatterCheck doesn't promise this works on any specific product. See the Matter leak sensor support guide and the leak sensor type page.

Thread or Wi-Fi: what you need

The two Matter water valves MatterCheck tracks are Matter over Thread. JINK's valve is a battery end device using four AA batteries; Tevinge's power and Thread role are not confirmed. Both need a Thread border router plus each platform's Matter hub. The Aqara Valve Controller T1 is Zigbee, so it reaches Matter only through a Matter-capable Aqara hub.

Troubleshooting Matter water valves

Which platform is best for a Matter water valve?

For a native Water Valve with open/close, state, starters, and actions, SmartThings and Home Assistant are the only platforms in the matrix. Both are Med until a consumer valve test lands. SmartThings lists Water Valve on its Matter partners page (SmartThings Matter partners page), and Home Assistant's Matter integration lists Valve as a category (Home Assistant Matter integration). On Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa, choose a valve that's certified or exposed as a plug type and accept a plain on/off tile. For leak-triggered shut-off, check the leak sensor row too.

Matter multi-admin can let you add a device to more than one platform, but it doesn't change whether a platform understands the Water Valve device type. See multi-admin and the platform comparison guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does Apple Home support Matter water valves?

No. Apple Home rejects the native Water Valve type at pairing, with High confidence. A valve exposed as a plug can work, but it appears as an outlet tile with no valve wording.

Does the EcoNet Bulldog work with Apple Home over Matter?

It's certified as an On/Off Plug-in Unit, not a Water Valve, so Apple Home treats it as a plug. MatterCheck's plug row rates Apple Home Yes for pairing, control, automation starter and automation action (High). MatterCheck doesn't track the Bulldog as a valve, and you get an on/off tile with no open/closed wording.

Does Alexa support Matter water shut-off valves?

No for the native Water Valve type. It's absent from Amazon's categories page, and bridged tests say Alexa doesn't recognize it. A plug-type valve should show as an outlet.

Does Google Home support Matter water valves?

No for the native type, at Med confidence. Google's developer type list omits valves, and no independent test was found. Use a plug-type valve if you want on/off control in Google Home.

Can a Matter leak sensor close a Matter water valve automatically?

Only if the platform supports both the leak sensor as a starter and the valve as an action. Native valves only meet both on SmartThings and Home Assistant. On Apple Home and Google Home, the valve must be a plug-type valve.

Do I need a Thread border router for a Matter water valve?

For the tracked Thread valves — JINK and Tevinge — yes. You'll also need each platform's Matter hub. The Aqara T1 is Zigbee and needs a Matter-capable Aqara hub.

Is the Aqara Valve Controller T1 a Matter valve?

No. It's a Zigbee valve controller; it reaches Matter only when bridged through a Matter-capable Aqara hub.

How we checked

MatterCheck's values come from the MatterCheck matrix v1.15. The water valve values were last checked 2026-10-17 to 2026-10-19 depending on the platform. High confidence requires an official statement covering the feature plus a dated hands-on test of the device type on that platform; a No can be High when it rests on explicit dated negatives, as on Apple Home, rather than only an omission from an official list. Official listings, driver code, and developer test devices alone stay Med. See methodology, the water valve type page, and hubs.
