The Gainsborough Freestyle Smart Wi-Fi Trilock is an Australian-market smart digital entrance lever lock from Allegion/Schlage Lock Company. It has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for the Freestyle app, plus Matter over Thread for Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, and SmartThings. Matter control requires a Thread border router and Matter controller. The lock includes a capacitive touch keypad, emergency key override, passage/privacy/deadlock modes, and remote lock/unlock. For Matter, only the latest ET-WIFI version is supported.
Gainsborough Freestyle Matter Transport and CSA Certification
Gainsborough says the Freestyle Smart Wi-Fi Trilock is Matter over Thread compatible. The CSA records list the primary device type as door lock, which is the door lock type covered on MatterCheck's door lock type page. DCL identifies the product as vid 4662 (0x1236) and pid 35328 (0x8A00), with product name "Gainsborough Freestyle Smart Wi-Fi Trilock". The DCL part number field reads "GFSW8901AURBSC, GFSW8951AURMB".
Two CSA certificates appear for product ID 0x8A00. The older certificate, CSA2506AMAT44988-24, has firmware 6.0.0.0 and a certified date of 29 January 2025. The newer certificate, CSA25G34MAT49090-24, has firmware 6.6.0.0 and a certified date of 22 December 2025. Both are Matter specification 1.2, with Transport Interface listed as Thread and Bluetooth. CSA also describes the hardware as having a 2.4 GHz BLE, Thread, and Wi-Fi transceiver, internal PCB trace antenna, capacitive touch numeric keypad, four AA batteries, and an emergency key override.
The Thread role is a Thread device, not a border router. Gainsborough states that a Thread Border Router is required to connect Thread-enabled devices to the home network.

MatterCheck Door Lock Platform Matrix for Gainsborough Freestyle
These are MatterCheck's type-level matrix answers for the door lock device type on the door lock type page. Gainsborough's own published ecosystem list is narrower in places, as described below the table.
| Platform | Pairs | Control | Starts automations | Controlled by automations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Google Home | Yes | Partial | Yes | Partial |
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | Yes | Yes | Partial |
| SmartThings | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Homey | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Hubitat | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Gainsborough's Matter FAQ and feature table document Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, and SmartThings with Matter. The matrix also lists Home Assistant, Homey, and Hubitat as Yes for the door lock type, but Gainsborough's product-specific material does not include those three. MatterCheck's product-level platform behavior for this lock is not separately tested in the supplied sources.
Gainsborough Freestyle Feature Differences Across Ecosystems
Across the four Matter ecosystems Gainsborough publishes, remote lock/unlock, keypad lock/unlock, and battery level are shown as supported. Remote deadlock and door state with the Door Sensor Kit are Freestyle app Wi-Fi features only, with X marks for Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, and SmartThings with Matter.
Apple Home and Google Home get the most Matter features in Gainsborough's table: keypad deadlock, assign/invite users, scheduled access, auto lock, and lock notifications. Google Home also gets volume control. Alexa with Matter and SmartThings with Matter are marked X for keypad deadlock, assign/invite users, scheduled access, auto lock, and lock notifications.
Gainsborough states that the Freestyle app and Matter platforms must operate independently. If you pair the lock to a Matter ecosystem, the app's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth features are not part of that Matter connection.
Gainsborough Freestyle Setup, Specs, and Limits
Matter is only available on the latest ET-WIFI version. Gainsborough's check path is: Freestyle app > Settings > Lock Settings > select your lock, then confirm the model type displays as ET-Wi-Fi. Firmware update path: Freestyle app > Settings > Device > Firmware Update. To change from Matter features back to the Freestyle app, Gainsborough says to factory reset by pressing the reset pin just above the battery compartment, which resets the lock to default settings.

Product specs and official documentation
- CSA describes the lock as a digital entrance lever lock set with 3-in-1 passage, privacy, and deadlock functions.
- Gainsborough says the Freestyle app supports assign, invite, and scheduled access for up to 20 users on iOS and Android.
- Built-in Wi-Fi connects directly without an adapter or hub; Bluetooth is available for app control.
- Four AA batteries are used, with up to 6 months battery life on Wi-Fi and up to 12 months with Matter over Thread, according to Gainsborough.
- Low battery notification is shown at the lock and through the app; a hidden external panel can power the lock with a 9V battery if the AA batteries are drained.
- Gainsborough lists a backlit keypad hidden by a slide cover and an emergency key override that can be keyed alike to other Gainsborough products.
- Finishes are brushed satin chrome and matte black. Gainsborough's Matter page says only Brushed Satin Chrome GFSW8951AURBSC and Matte Black GFSW8951AURMB support Matter over Thread. The DCL part field lists GFSW8901AURBSC and GFSW8951AURMB; this page does not resolve that difference.
- Gainsborough's product page links an Installation Guide, Connecting to Google Assistant guide, and Programming Guide.
No independent review text is included in the supplied sources, so reviewer-specific behavior is not described here. The feature and setup statements are from Gainsborough and CSA official documentation.
Gainsborough Freestyle Verdict
- Buy if you have a supported Apple Home or SmartThings Thread border router and want Matter over Thread with up to 12 months battery life.
- Buy if you want keypad access, a physical key override, three lock modes, and up to 20 users in the Freestyle app.
- Skip if you need remote deadlock or door state from a Door Sensor Kit on any Matter ecosystem, or assigned/scheduled users in Alexa or SmartThings with Matter; Gainsborough marks those as unavailable there.
- Skip if your Freestyle is not the latest ET-WIFI version, because Matter is only supported on the latest ET-WIFI model type.
- Skip if you want official Gainsborough setup documentation for Home Assistant, Homey, or Hubitat; the manufacturer's Matter page documents Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, and SmartThings only.
