Kasa Smart Wifi Plug, Energy Monitoring (KP125M) and Matter
The Kasa Smart Wifi Plug, Energy Monitoring (part number KP125M) is a Matter over Wi-Fi smart plug from TP-Link's Kasa brand. It connects to your home network on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and uses Bluetooth only for initial onboarding. Because it is Matter-certified, it can pair with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and other Matter controllers without a Kasa hub or a Thread border router. The CSA certified the KP125M on December 27, 2022 under certificate CSA22401MAT40401-24, and a later firmware update brought Matter 1.3 certification on March 5, 2025 under CSA2511CMAT45166-24.
Matter transport, certification, and firmware for the KP125M
The KP125M is a Matter over Wi-Fi device, not a Thread device, so it does not act as a Thread router or require a Thread border router. TP-Link's press release from April 2023 states the plug provides "smooth LAN control" so devices can communicate directly even if the home internet goes offline. The CSA DCL record lists the Matter on/off plug-in unit device type. Matter Alpha's DCL-verified page shows the latest certified firmware as 1.3.0 with Matter specification version 1.3, and notes an earlier 1.0.0 firmware certified in December 2022. The official Kasa user guide says Bluetooth turns off 15 minutes after the plug is powered up, so you restart the device to re-enter setup mode.
MatterCheck's Matter over Thread vs Wi-Fi guide explains why a Wi-Fi plug like this does not need a border router, while our Matter hub and Thread border router guide covers the hubs that do. For general pairing help, see what to do when a Matter device won't pair.
Platform support for the Kasa KP125M smart plug
These are MatterCheck's type-level matrix answers for Matter plug and outlet devices. The KP125M is CSA-certified as this device type, and the sources below confirm Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings in hands-on or official material. Product-specific differences are noted after the table.
| Platform | Pairs | Control | Starts automations | Controlled by automations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Google Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | Yes | Unknown | Yes |
| SmartThings | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Homey | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Hubitat | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
The Amazon Alexa "Starts automations" cell is Unknown in MatterCheck's matrix: no official source or dated hands-on report confirms whether a Matter plug can trigger an Alexa routine. In Reviewed's May 2023 review, writer Camryn Rabideau paired the KP125M through the Kasa app and it automatically synced to her Alexa account; she controlled a lamp by voice and reported no connectivity issues. She also scanned the Matter QR code on the side of the device, which opened Apple Home and walked her through setup there, after which she could control the plug from the Alexa app, the Apple Home app, or the Kasa app.
How the KP125M compares across Matter platforms
TP-Link's April 2023 press release says the KP125M is compatible with all certified smart home platforms, naming Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. The Kasa product page adds that you can set up the plug by scanning the included code with the Alexa app, Google Home app, or Apple Home app. The official user guide notes that the Matter setup code on the device works only for the initial ecosystem; to add the plug to a second ecosystem, you generate a new setup code from an app in the ecosystem where it is already paired. That matches the multi-admin flow described in MatterCheck's guide to sharing a Matter device across platforms.
Energy monitoring is presented as a Kasa-app feature in TP-Link's November 2023 community reply, in which Riley_S wrote that energy monitoring data was then kept within TP-Link's own platforms and that a firmware update would be needed once Matter added support for the feature; Matter Alpha's DCL-verified capability list for the 1.3.0 firmware (Matter 1.3) does list Electrical Energy Measurement and Electrical Power Measurement clusters. A community user, JCH2103, reported that the Kasa app showed power use correctly, but the Tapo app did not show power use until after the Kasa app had been run for the same plug.
Kasa KP125M setup steps and product limits
The official Kasa user guide gives these setup steps for the Kasa Smart app:
- Install the Kasa Smart app from Google Play or the App Store.
- Log in or sign up with a TP-Link ID.
- Tap the add button, select Add a Device > Smart Plugs, choose the KP125M, and follow the app instructions.
For Matter setup, the guide says to turn on Bluetooth on your phone, open a Matter-compatible smart home app, scan the Matter QR code or enter the numeric setup code, and follow the app instructions. If setup fails, TP-Link suggests connecting your phone to a stable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, restarting the device, controller, or phone, and making sure IPv6 is enabled on your router.
Specifications from the Kasa product page and Reviewed's review:
- Dimensions: 2.6 x 1.5 x 1.6 inches (66.5 x 38 x 40 mm), small enough to fit two plugs in a standard outlet.
- Max load: 15 A, 1800 W general use or resistive load; 1/6 HP motor.
- Power: AC 100–120 V, 50/60 Hz; 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.
- Operating temperature: 0–40 °C (32–104 °F); operating humidity: 10–90% RH non-condensing.
- UL certified, with a V-0 UL94 flame-retardant polycarbonate shell and a 2-year limited warranty.
- Sold in 2-packs and 4-packs; the April 2023 press release lists MSRPs of $39.99 for the 2-pack and $69.99 for the 4-pack.
Kasa says the KP125M supports scheduling, away mode, a countdown timer, grouping and scenes, voice control via Alexa, Siri, or Google Assistant, and an auto-off timer that was still in development at the time of the product page. The energy monitoring feature includes hourly energy usage, power consumption averages, billing settings with flat or time-of-use rates, seasonal summer and winter schedules, CSV data exports, and an energy calendar. Kasa notes on the product page that the new version of Energy Monitoring "will be available soon", and the TP-Link community announcement from April 2023 says the new energy monitoring feature was at that time available only on the KP125M.
In Reviewed's May 2023 review, Camryn Rabideau found setup took a couple of minutes, the plug responded instantly to Alexa voice commands, and after nearly two weeks of use a bedroom lamp cost about $0.01 to operate at $0.18 per kWh. She noted the plug was only sold in multipacks at the time and cost more than many non-Matter smart plugs.
Kasa KP125M verdict
- Buy if you want a Matter over Wi-Fi plug with per-outlet energy monitoring, billing estimates, and a compact design that leaves the second socket free.
- Buy if you use Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, or SmartThings and want to pair the same plug into more than one ecosystem using Matter multi-admin.
- Skip if you expect energy monitoring data to appear in Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, or SmartThings; TP-Link's November 2023 community reply said that data was then kept within TP-Link's own platforms, but Matter Alpha's DCL-verified capability list for the 1.3.0 firmware does list Electrical Energy Measurement and Electrical Power Measurement clusters.
- Skip if you want a single plug rather than a 2-pack or 4-pack, or if you need 5 GHz Wi-Fi support.
