SmartSetup Thread 1-Channel Power Controller (MS01) overview

The SmartSetup Thread 1-Channel Power Controller, sold as the Premium One Gang Matter Over Thread Certified Wall Switch MS01W, is a Matter 1.4-certified one-gang wall switch for Australian homes. It connects over Thread, so it needs a Thread border router and a Matter controller from Apple, Google, Amazon, SmartThings, Home Assistant, Homey or another Matter ecosystem. SmartSetup's product page lists Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant support, and the CSA certification record confirms the device type as a plug/outlet-style power controller.

Matter transport and CSA certification for the MS01

The MS01 is a Thread device, not Wi-Fi (see MatterCheck's Thread vs Wi-Fi guide). SmartSetup says it works with any ecosystem that supports Matter and has a Thread border router, and that the switch acts as a repeater to extend the Thread network range. The CSA DCL record for vid 5385 / pid 1 lists the product name "SmartSetup Smart Switch", product label "SmartSetup Thread 1-Channel Power Controller", part number MS01, and device type ID 266. The certificate CSA25CC9MAT48155-24 was certified on 2025-10-20 as a Matter 1.4 device. SmartSetup's product page also states the switch supports the Matter 1.4 specification.

Platform support matrix for the SmartSetup MS01

These are MatterCheck's type-level matrix answers for Matter plug/outlet devices. The MS01 is CSA-certified as device type 266, which maps to plug_outlet. Product-specific differences noted by SmartSetup or customers appear below the table.

SmartSetup's MS01W product page explicitly lists Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant. The page also names Homey Pro or Homey Pro Mini under system requirements, and a customer review on SmartSetup's site says the switches "easily connect every time" with Homey. Hubitat is not mentioned on the product page; its Yes values come from MatterCheck's type-level matrix for plug_outlet devices. Amazon Alexa's "Starts automations" cell is Unknown in MatterCheck's matrix.

Cross-platform comparison for the MS01

Across the seven platforms in MatterCheck's matrix, the MS01 has Yes for pairing and control everywhere. The only non-Yes cell is Amazon Alexa's automation trigger, which is Unknown. SmartSetup's own compatibility list omits Hubitat but includes Homey, and the product page's system requirements name specific border routers for Apple, Samsung, Amazon, Google, Home Assistant, Homey and Ikea DIRIGERA. Customer reviews on SmartSetup's site report successful use with Apple HomeKit, Home Assistant and Homey, with one reviewer running Apple HomeKit and Home Assistant together.

Setup and requirements for the SmartSetup MS01

SmartSetup's product page says professional installation by a licensed electrician is required. The switch fits standard Australian wall plates and needs no neutral wire. For commissioning, SmartSetup lists these border router requirements:

  • Apple: Apple TV 4K (2nd gen), Apple TV 4K (3rd gen, 128 GB), HomePod (2nd gen), HomePod mini
  • Google: Google TV Streamer, Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro
  • Amazon: Echo (4th gen), Echo Hub, Echo Plus (2nd gen), Echo Show 8 (3rd gen), Echo Show 10 (3rd gen), Echo Studio, eero 6, eero 6+, eero Pro 6, eero Pro 6E, eero Max 7
  • Samsung: SmartThings Hub v3, SmartThings Station
  • Home Assistant: a Thread bridge such as Home Assistant SkyConnect (ZBT-1/ZBT-2), SONOFF ZBDongle-E Zigbee USB, or another Thread-enabled device
  • Homey: Homey Pro or Homey Pro Mini
  • Ikea: DIRIGERA HUB

SmartSetup also sells a Matter Over Thread HUB (SHUB) and a Home Assistant HUB (HAHUB) for its own ecosystem. A verified customer review from 24 July 2026 recommends keeping the QR code on paper or on a computer so it can be scanned after the panel is installed, then doing a full reset by turning the switchboard off and on and updating the firmware before use.

MS01 specs, limits and reported behaviour

  • Rated voltage: AC 100-240V (N+L) or AC 220-240V (L), 50 Hz
  • Max load: 600W per gang with neutral, 400W per gang without neutral
  • Power consumption: 0.5W
  • Dimensions: 120mm x 72mm x 37mm; weight 0.17 kg
  • Warranty: 1 year; RCM mark and SAA safety standards
  • Switch type: capacitive touch, tempered glass panel, no mechanical buttons
  • Protection: overload and overheat protection
  • Smart bulb mode: detached relay mode provides constant power to smart bulbs so the switch can control them without cutting power
  • Multi-way switching: SmartSetup says one switch powers the light and a second acts as a remote with no load, mirrored via automation

SmartSetup says the switch provides real-time on/off feedback, smart timer function and Scene Mode. A customer review from 25 August 2025 highlights the always-on power mode for Philips Hue bulbs and the ability to use the switch as a HomeKit input to control an outlet. A 24 January 2026 review notes the switch is accessible rather than an inline module, can be reset with a long press, and has dip switches behind the face plate for smart light mode. A 4 April 2026 review from a customer with 30 SmartSetup switches and 32 power points reports easy pairing and fast response with Apple HomeKit and Home Assistant, and says the Thread network improves as more devices are installed.

Verdict on the SmartSetup MS01

  • Buy if you want a Matter 1.4-certified Thread wall switch for Australian homes with no neutral wire required, smart bulb/detached relay mode, and capacitive touch controls.
  • Buy if you already have a Thread border router from Apple, Google, Amazon, SmartThings, Home Assistant, Homey or Ikea and want a switch that acts as a Thread repeater.
  • Skip if you need a switch for a non-Australian wall plate or a region outside the MS01W's stated Australian focus; SmartSetup lists separate MS01EU and MS01U variants.
  • Skip if you want dimming, which a 22 June 2026 customer review asks SmartSetup to add.
