The Tapo Smart Wi-Fi Outlet Extender (Tapo P306, part P306) is a 9-in-1 Wi-Fi smart plug that expands one duplex outlet into three individually controlled smart outlets, three always-on outlets, and three USB ports (one USB-C and two USB-A). It is listed in the CSA DCL as an On/Off Plug-in Unit; MatterAlpha lists a CSA Matter certification (CSA23583MAT41096-24, certified 2023-05-19). TP-Link also names Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings as third-party platforms. The P306 connects over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; Bluetooth is for setup only.

Tapo P306 Matter Transport and CSA Certification

The CSA DCL model record lists Tapo Smart Wi-Fi Outlet Extender, part number P306, as an On/Off Plug-in Unit. MatterAlpha lists certificate CSA23583MAT41096-24, certified 2023-05-19.

MatterAlpha lists the P306 as a released On/Off Plug-in Unit that supports the Matter protocol. It also shows a 1.0.0 certification from May 19, 2023 with certificate CSA23583MAT41096-24 and a newer certification from March 5, 2025 with certificate CSA2511DMAT45167-24.

TP-Link's product page specifies IEEE 802.11b/g/n, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth for setup only. Because this is a Wi-Fi device, it does not need a Thread border router. That differs from Thread plugs, which rely on a border router; see MatterCheck's Matter Thread vs. Wi-Fi guide or the Thread border router guide.

Tapo P306 Platform Compatibility Matrix

The table below is MatterCheck's type-level matrix for the plug_outlet device type. The P306 SKU record notes that platform support follows this type matrix, and no product-specific platform test has been reviewed yet.

Tapo P306 Platform Compatibility Matrix

Apple HomeYesYesYesYes
Google HomeYesYesYesYes
Amazon AlexaYesYesUnknownYes
SmartThingsYesYesYesYes
Home AssistantYesYesYesYes
HomeyYesYesYesYes
HubitatYesYesYesYes

TP-Link's official compatibility list on the P306 product page names Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings, but does not mention Home Assistant, Homey, or Hubitat. Those three platforms are still Yes at MatterCheck's plug_outlet type level.

Cross-Platform Control for Tapo P306

Every platform in the matrix can pair with and control a plug_outlet. Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, Home Assistant, Homey, and Hubitat can all start and be controlled by automations. Amazon Alexa is the one exception: it pairs and controls, and automations can control it, but whether Alexa starts automations is Unknown in MatterCheck's matrix.

TP-Link's P306 page lists Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings as third-party platforms. Voice control is listed for Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant. Matter multi-admin behavior for sharing a Matter device across ecosystems is covered in MatterCheck's multi-admin guide.

Tapo P306 Setup, Specs, and Owner Reports

Tapo P306 Official Setup Steps

Tapo's Quick Start Guide gives these setup steps:

  • Download the Tapo app from the App Store or Google Play.
  • Plug in the P306, tap the + button in the Tapo app, and select the model. Follow the app instructions.
  • For voice control, go to Me > Third-Party Services in the Tapo app and integrate Alexa, Google Assistant, or other third-party services.

The three Smart Outlet Buttons (1-3) each toggle their matching smart outlet. Holding one for 5 seconds resets Wi-Fi while keeping other settings; holding one for 10 seconds restores the extender to factory defaults.

General Matter smart plug pairing help is in MatterCheck's Matter smart plug support guide, and Tapo/Kasa Matter behavior is covered in the Tapo and Kasa devices guide.

Tapo P306 Owner and TP-Link Reports

TP-Link's announcement describes the P306 as a 9-in-1 outlet extender with 18W fast charging, three smart outlets, three always-on outlets, three smart USB ports, surge protection, a smart night light, phone holder, dual-antenna Wi-Fi, and WPA3 security. TP-Link also says Smart Actions can turn the outlet on when motion is detected or a door is opened, and that the smart outlets and USB ports can be controlled from the Tapo app or Apple Home app.

In an August 29, 2024 post on the TP-Link Smart Home Community, user Zubairsk liked the non-blocking design, the mix of smart and always-on outlets, the night light, and WPA3, and called the phone holder a "neat bonus."

In a December 2, 2024 post on the same forum, user JG26 wrote that he has two P306 extenders and they are "great," but cautioned there is no overall reset or connect button. After an access point went down and was restarted, he had to physically unplug and replug the P306 to reconnect.

A review on the official Tapo US store says setup is easy and highlights the built-in night light, though the reviewer initially assumed the unit had more smart outlets than it does.

No formal laboratory review or professional outlet review of the P306 appears in the supplied sources, and MatterCheck has not tested the P306.

Tapo P306 Verdict

  • Buy if you need to turn one wall outlet into 9 connections with three individually controlled smart outlets, three always-on outlets, and three USB ports.
  • Buy if you want built-in surge and overheat protection, a light-sensing night light, and voice control through Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant.
  • Skip if you want all outlets to be smart; three outlets are always-on, and the USB ports are controlled together.
  • Skip if you want a physical overall reset or connect button; a TP-Link community owner reported power-cycling the P306 was needed after an access point outage.
  • Skip if you want a Thread-based plug; the P306 is Wi-Fi with Bluetooth setup only.
