Matter garage door openers: what works on Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant
Matter 1.5, announced by the Connectivity Standards Alliance on 2025-11-20, added closures — a unified approach that covers garage doors and gates as well as shades. Of the five platforms, only SmartThings says it handles closures (Samsung, 2026-10-06; hub 0.61.6 driver notes), Home Assistant's closure support is still an open pull request, and Apple's and Amazon's lists, and Google's developer table, name no garage door or closure device type (Google's help page mentions garage door openers without naming one). So the openers sold as "Matter" today pair as something else — Konnected's shows up as blinds or shades, SwitchBot says its opener shows as a standard switch — and that decides what you can do with it.
Does Matter support garage doors?
The CSA's Matter 1.5 announcement lists closures as one of the release's headline additions, alongside cameras, soil sensors and energy management. The CSA describes a "revamped and unified approach to closures" that covers window shades, drapes, awnings, gates and garage doors. The CSA says a simplified, modular cluster design lets makers represent motion types — sliding, rotating, opening — and configurations such as single or dual panels or nested mechanisms with a small set of building blocks.
For consumers, the CSA says the result is more consistent control across apps and ecosystems, improved safety and security through precise position reporting, and support for the "did I remember to close the garage or lock the door" use case. Makers that shipped earlier had to improvise: Konnected's Matter page (undated) says the Matter specifications don't yet support garage door openers as a device type, so it uses the Window Covering type, which shares open and close commands and states. Home Assistant's pull request #183177 describes the 1.5 Closure clusters as the successor to Window Covering for garage doors, gates, blinds and roof windows. A standard existing doesn't mean your app supports it — see Matter version support and the platform-by-platform breakdown below.
Garage door and closure support on each platform
Only SmartThings says it supports the Matter Closure device type; on the other four, an opener has to present as a type they do list, such as blinds or a switch.
| Platform | Garage door / closure type listed? | What its own pages say | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Not listed | The Home app's Matter list is air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, outlets, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, and sensors. No garage doors or closures | Apple Support 102135 (published 2026-05-07) |
| Google Home | Help page: yes; developer table: no | The help page lists garage door openers among its Matter 1.2 additions, without naming a device type. The developer table has no garage door or closure row and says unlisted types aren't officially supported | Google Home Help 12391458; Google Home Developers (updated 2026-10-08) |
| Alexa | Not listed | Amazon's closure category is door locks (Alexa.LockController) and window coverings such as blinds (Alexa.RangeController) only | Amazon developer docs |
| SmartThings | Yes (Closure) | Samsung lists "Closures for specialized door and gate types" in its Matter 1.6 update. Hub 0.61.6 notes: closures support added to the window-covering driver. The driver's code maps the Matter Closure type (0x0230) | Samsung Newsroom (2026-10-06); SmartThings release notes (rollout from 2026-06-15); SmartThings driver code |
| Home Assistant | Not yet (open pull request) | The Matter cover code maps only Window Covering types (shade, awning, curtain, blind). Pull request #183177 would add Matter 1.5 Closure support, including garage doors; open, not merged, on 2026-10-19 | Home Assistant core on GitHub |
Apple Home
Apple's Pair and manage your Matter accessories page (published 2026-05-07) lists the Matter accessory types the Home app supports: air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, outlets, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, and sensors (motion, ambient light, contact, temperature, and humidity). Garage doors, gates and closures aren't on that list, and no Apple page we checked mentions Matter garage door openers. An opener that presents as blinds and shades or as a switch can still pair as that type, but it then appears as that type rather than as a garage door.
Google Home
Google's consumer Prepare your smart home for Matter help page lists garage door openers among the devices Google Home added with Matter 1.2 support, alongside "Air purifiers and garage door openers." But that page doesn't say which Matter device type those openers use. Google's developer table of supported device types (updated 2026-10-08) has no garage door, gate or closure row, says device types not listed aren't officially supported, and maps Window Covering to its Blinds type. So an opener that presents as Window Covering lands on a listed type (Blinds), while one that uses the 1.5 Closure type doesn't.
Alexa
Amazon's developer page for supported Matter device categories lists closure devices as door locks and window coverings only: a door lock maps to Alexa.LockController, and a window covering such as blinds maps to Alexa.RangeController. The page points to version 1.5 of the Matter Device Library, but no Amazon page we checked mentions garage doors or the 1.5 Closure type. An opener that appears as blinds can pair through that path; a true Matter garage door isn't described.
SmartThings
Samsung's 2026-10-06 announcement says SmartThings added Matter 1.6 with new categories including "Closures for specialized door and gate types." SmartThings' hub firmware 0.61.6 release notes (a staff post, rollout from 2026-06-15) say "Closures support added to matter-window-covering driver." The driver's code on GitHub fingerprints the Matter Closure device type (0x0230) to a covering profile, with the entry added 2026-05-12. Neither page says how a closure looks in the SmartThings app or names a closure product.
Home Assistant
Home Assistant's Matter cover code maps only Window Covering devices — roller shades, awnings, draperies and tilt blinds — to cover entities, defaulting to awning, with no closure or garage mapping. Pull request #183177 (opened 2026-09-26, still open and not merged on 2026-10-19) would add Matter 1.5 Closure support to the cover platform, including single-endpoint garage door closures with open, close and stop but no fine position. An earlier pull request with the same title (#179313) was closed without being merged. Until that lands in a release, Home Assistant shows a Matter garage opener as the type it presents — a Window Covering opener becomes a shade, awning, curtain or blind cover.
How today's "Matter garage door openers" show up
None of the pages we checked names a product that uses Matter 1.5's Closure device type. The openers we checked present as blinds or shades (Konnected) or, by SwitchBot's own wording and ThirdReality owners' reports, as a switch.
| Opener | Matter connection | How it shows up | Caveats | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Konnected GDO White (Matter firmware) | Not stated on the page | As blinds or shades (Matter Window Covering type) | Experimental and not production-ready; NOT Matter certified; needs Konnected's Matter early-access program | Konnected support page |
| ThirdReality Smart Garage Door Opener | Matter over Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz) | Not stated by ThirdReality. SmartThings Community owners (2026-05-12) report an on-off switch on every platform | Says Matter certified; sectional (flip-up) doors only, not rolling or sliding; tilt sensor pre-paired, not exposed to platforms per owners | ThirdReality product page and launch post (2025-12-01); SmartThings Community owners |
| SwitchBot Garage Door Opener | Matter over Wi-Fi | "Will show as a standard switch" | Help article for when it appears as "Relay Switch 1" in HomeKit without the garage door status | SwitchBot product page and help center |
| Chamberlain myQ | No Matter mention | — | Partners page lists Vivint, Alarm.com, Resideo, IFTTT, Control4, Crestron, Ezlo, RTI, Jervis and Sensi; none of the five platforms | myQ partners page |
Konnected GDO White. Konnected says its Matter firmware is experimental, not production-ready, NOT Matter certified and may not work on all controllers. You need to be accepted into Konnected's Matter early-access (EAP) program. Because the Matter specs don't yet support garage door openers as a device type, Konnected uses the Window Covering type, so the GDO White shows up as blinds or shades. Konnected lists Apple Home (with an Apple Home Hub), Google Home (with a Nest Hub or Nest Audio), SmartThings (locally with a SmartThings Hub or Station) and Alexa (locally with a supported Echo or eero hub). It has a pre-close warning whose default and minimum duration is 5 seconds.
ThirdReality Smart Garage Door Opener and SwitchBot Garage Door Opener. ThirdReality says its opener is Matter certified, uses Matter over Wi-Fi with a 2.4 GHz network and a Matter controller, comes with a pre-paired tilt sensor, and is built for sectional (flip-up) doors, not rolling or sliding doors (per its 2025-12-01 launch post). Its page doesn't say which Matter device type it uses — owners on the SmartThings Community forum (2026-05-12) say all you get is an on-off switch regardless of platform and the tilt sensor isn't exposed to any platform's automations. SwitchBot says its opener supports Matter over Wi-Fi, works with over 1600 garage door models, and "will show as a standard switch" in the Home app. SwitchBot's help center article covers the case where it appears as "Relay Switch 1" in HomeKit without the garage door status: update firmware, delete and re-add, then contact SwitchBot.
myQ. The myQ partners page lists its smart home partners: Vivint, Alarm.com, Resideo, IFTTT, Control4, Crestron, Crestron Home, Ezlo, RTI, Jervis and Sensi. It doesn't mention Matter, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant.
If your opener shows up as blinds or shades
MatterCheck's checks for the Matter Window Covering type show what a garage opener that uses it can do on each platform.
| Platform | Pairs | Control | Can start an automation | Can be set by an automation | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
| Google Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
| Alexa | Yes | Yes | Unknown | Partial | Med |
| SmartThings | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
Every platform pairs and controls Window Covering. Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant can use it both to start an automation and as an action. On Alexa it can't be relied on to start a routine (Unknown) and works as a routine action only on some paths (Partial), with Med confidence in MatterCheck's checks. See Matter blinds and shades support and the Window Covering type page for the full picture.
The practical cost is that the app will label and treat the door as a shade, and voice and automation wording will be about blinds. In Home Assistant you can change the cover's "Show as" to Garage door, per the Cover documentation, which gives it the Garage door opened and closed triggers and conditions. Of the platform pages we checked, that's the only one that describes relabelling a cover as a garage door.
If your opener shows up as a switch
SwitchBot says the switch triggers the analog keys to open and close the garage door — its product page lists "Trigger of analog keys: open and close the garage door" as the button function. What you get is an on/off control rather than a door with an open or closed state, which is what SwitchBot's "standard switch" wording and ThirdReality owners' reports describe. Door status may be missing: SwitchBot's help article covers the "Relay Switch 1" case, and ThirdReality owners say the tilt sensor isn't exposed to platform automations.
Of the platform pages we checked, only Home Assistant's docs describe turning that into a garage door. When you create a cover yourself with a template helper you choose the device class, and the garage device class is called Garage door under Show as, per the Cover documentation. Since 2026.4, Home Assistant says door, garage door, gate and window triggers work from both binary sensors and covers. See Matter support in Home Assistant and Matter smart plug support for how on/off devices behave on each platform.
What to check before you buy a Matter garage door opener
- What device type the maker says it shows up as. Blinds or shades means shade-style control and wording; a switch means on/off control, and the door's state may not come through. Konnected says blinds or shades; SwitchBot says a standard switch; ThirdReality's page doesn't say.
- Whether the door's open/closed status reaches your platform. SwitchBot's help article covers missing garage door status in HomeKit, and ThirdReality owners report the tilt sensor isn't exposed to automations.
- Certification. Konnected says its firmware is NOT Matter certified; ThirdReality says its opener is Matter certified — but neither page says it's certified as a garage door.
- Door type. ThirdReality says its opener is for sectional (flip-up) doors only, not rolling or sliding doors. SwitchBot says it works with over 1600 garage door models.
- Network and controller. ThirdReality requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and a Matter controller; Konnected lists a hub for each platform. See Matter hubs and Thread border routers.
- Whether your platform lists closures at all. Only SmartThings does today. Apple's and Amazon's lists and Google's developer table name no garage door or closure type, though Google's help page mentions garage door openers.
If pairing fails, start with Matter device not pairing before returning anything.
Frequently asked questions
Does Apple Home support Matter garage door openers?
Apple's Matter accessories page doesn't list garage doors, gates or closures among the types the Home app supports. An opener that presents as blinds and shades or as a switch can still pair as that type, but the Home app will treat it as that type. No Apple page we checked mentions Matter garage door openers.
Can Google Home open a Matter garage door?
Google's consumer help page lists garage door openers among its Matter 1.2 additions, but doesn't say which Matter device type they use. Google's developer table has no garage door, gate or closure row and says unlisted device types aren't officially supported. An opener that presents as blinds pairs as Google's listed Blinds type instead.
Does Alexa support Matter garage doors?
Amazon's developer page lists closure devices as door locks and window coverings only, and no Amazon page we checked mentions garage doors or the 1.5 Closure type. An opener that presents as blinds can pair through the window covering path.
Does SmartThings support Matter garage doors?
Yes — it's the only platform of the five that says it handles the Closure device type. Samsung's 2026-10-06 announcement lists "Closures for specialized door and gate types," and the hub 0.61.6 release notes say closures support was added to the matter-window-covering driver. Neither page says how a closure looks in the app or names a closure product.
Does Home Assistant support Matter closures?
Not in a release yet. Home Assistant's Matter cover code maps only Window Covering devices, and pull request #183177 to add Matter 1.5 Closure support was still open and not merged on 2026-10-19. Until it's merged and released, an opener shows up as the type it presents, such as a Window Covering cover.
Does myQ support Matter?
The myQ partners page doesn't mention Matter, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant. Its listed partners are Vivint, Alarm.com, Resideo, IFTTT, Control4, Crestron, Crestron Home, Ezlo, RTI, Jervis and Sensi.
Is there a Matter over Thread garage door opener?
The two maker pages we checked that name a connection — ThirdReality and SwitchBot — both say Matter over Wi-Fi. No page we checked names a Matter over Thread garage door opener.
