Which smart home platforms support Matter light sensors?
All five platforms MatterCheck tracks pair a Matter light sensor and show its lux reading, though on Alexa the reading is device-dependent and contested between vendors. Apple Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant let light level start an automation and are rated High; Google Home can use light level only through its Script Editor, not the app's automation editor, so it's rated Partial with Med confidence. Alexa can't use light level as a routine starter at all. No sensor can be an automation action — a sensor has nothing to switch.
Matter light sensor support at a glance
In the table below, "Control" means the light reading shows in the platform's app. High confidence means MatterCheck found an official statement covering the feature plus a dated hands-on test of the device type on that platform; Med means that bar isn't met: the evidence is vendor claims or owner reports alone, or the sources disagree. Matter's Light Sensor device type reports illuminance in lux via the Illuminance Measurement cluster.
| Platform | Pairs | Control (lux reading) | Light level starts an automation | Automation action | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | High |
| Google Home | Yes | Yes | Partial | No | Med |
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | Yes | No | No | Med |
| SmartThings | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | High |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Yes | Yes | No | High |
Matter light sensors on Apple Home (HomeKit)
MatterCheck rates Apple Home Yes for pairing, showing the light reading and using light level to start an automation, with High confidence. Apple's Matter accessories page (published May 07, 2026, re-read 2026-10-17) lists ambient light sensors among the Matter sensor types Apple Home supports. Apple's iPhone User Guide describes the Home app's "A Sensor Detects Something" automation trigger, with the example of turning on stairway lights when motion is detected.
The dated hands-on evidence is strong. A 2026-08-05 homekit.reviews test of the IKEA MYGGSPRAY (a Matter-over-Thread motion sensor with a light sensor) found it appears as two Apple Home accessories: an occupancy sensor and a light sensor with live lux and a Rises Above / Drops Below trigger spanning 5–200 lux. An earlier 2026-02-13 HomeKit UK review also showed the light-level reading in Apple Home, but noted lux updates lagged 10–30 seconds, read low, and occasionally missed an automation — a device-side issue, not a platform limit. A 2026-03-07 Kiwi Smart Tech review also found Apple Home exposed light sensing, though its lux-gated automation was built in Home Assistant.
Apple recommends a home hub (HomePod or Apple TV), and you need one for remote access and automations. With iOS 18 or later an iPhone can add and control Matter accessories without a hub (iPhone 15 Pro or later for Thread accessories); otherwise Thread accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub or border router.
Matter light sensors on Google Home: is there a light level starter?
MatterCheck rates Google Home Yes for pairing and showing the light reading, Partial for using light level to start an automation, with Med confidence. Google's Matter supported-devices table lists Light Sensor. Google's developer docs map the Illuminance Measurement cluster to its generic SensorState trait rather than a named light-level state. The reading shows in the Google Home app.
The trigger is the weak spot. Google's consumer automation help (read 2026-10-18) lists starters that include temperature, humidity and occupancy but no light-level starter, and Tapo's T150 vendor table lists ambient light above/below as not offered as a Google (Matter) trigger. However, a 2026-07-21/22 GL.iNet forum owner of the LWR01 (a Matter-over-Thread presence and light sensor) reported that a Script Editor starter on light level below 100 lux works, then switched to occupancy as the starter with light level as a condition. That's why the trigger is Partial: it works only in Google's Script Editor, not in the Google Home app's automation editor. Google's Script Editor sensor-state reference names smoke and carbon monoxide examples but not light level, so the Partial rating rests on that owner report and on the app's editor having no light-level starter. You need a Google/Nest Matter hub, plus a Thread border router for Thread devices.
Matter light sensors on Alexa: can light level start a routine?
MatterCheck rates Alexa Yes for pairing and showing the light reading, No for using light level to start a routine, with Med confidence. The pairing works, but the light reading is device-dependent and contested. Amazon's Matter categories page maps Light sensor (Illuminance) to no Alexa interface ("—"). Tapo's T150 vendor table shows ambient light displayed on Alexa over Matter, but Aqara's FP300 product page marks the illumination sensor "Except Alexa" in both Zigbee and Thread modes, and the Aqara P2 page says its light sensor may be unavailable on Alexa. So the reading may not appear for some sensors.
For routines, the trigger is firmer: Tapo marks light above/below unsupported on Alexa, and Aqara's own product page contradicts its 2026-08-13 guide that listed a "light level below" routine trigger. If you searched "alexa light sensor routine," the honest answer is that Amazon documents no light-level starter for Matter sensors, the one vendor guide that lists one is contradicted by the same vendor's product page, and the reading itself may not appear for some sensors. You need a Matter-enabled Echo or eero hub.
Matter light sensors on SmartThings
MatterCheck rates SmartThings Yes for pairing, showing the light reading and using light level to start an automation, with High confidence. SmartThings lists Light Sensor under Matter Sensors on its Matter partners page. Owner reports are dated and specific: a 2026-02-13 SmartThings Community post says the IKEA MYGGSPRAY's light level works out of the box with the stock Matter sensor driver and reports on change, and a 2026-01-08 owner post says the MYGGSPRAY motion and light sensor works. Light level can start a SmartThings automation. You need a SmartThings-compatible hub (standalone hub, Samsung TV, Station, etc.).
Matter light sensors in Home Assistant
MatterCheck rates Home Assistant Yes for pairing, showing the light reading and using light level to start an automation, with High confidence. A Matter light sensor becomes an illuminance sensor entity — Home Assistant's core Matter sensor discovery maps IlluminanceMeasurement.MeasuredValue to the illuminance device class. You can use numeric state triggers on that entity for light-level automations.
The dated hands-on evidence: a 2026-01-30 SmartHomeScene test onboarded an Aqara FP300 to Home Assistant over Matter-over-Thread and got an illuminance sensor (with fewer settings than the Zigbee mode). A caveat from an Aqara Forum owner on 2026-05-07/08: the FP300 read 78 lx in bright sun and updated lux rarely with battery-saving Matter defaults, so light-level automations can lag. You need the Home Assistant Matter Server (HA OS recommended) and a Thread border router for Thread devices.
Can a Matter light sensor turn on lights when it gets dark?
Yes, on most platforms — but the starter matters. Every platform can use a Matter on/off or dimmable light as an automation action, and blinds/shades too except on Alexa where window covering as an action is Partial. Motion can start an automation on all five platforms. So on Apple Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant, light level can be the starter for a "turn on lights when it gets dark" automation. On Google Home, use the Script Editor for a light-level starter, or use occupancy as the starter with light level as a condition, as the GL.iNet forum owner did. On Alexa, use motion or a schedule instead, since light level isn't a routine starter. The Kiwi Smart Tech reviewer paired the MYGGSPRAY to Apple Home but built the lux-gated automation in Home Assistant. See our guides on Matter motion sensor support, Matter light bulb support and Matter blinds and shades support.
Why lux readings can lag or read low
These are device-side caveats, not platform limits. HomeKit UK's MYGGSPRAY test saw lux lag 10–30 seconds, read low, and occasionally missed an automation. Aqara P2 community reports describe a roughly 1,500 lux reporting cap, with lux reported on motion or on a poll to save battery. The Aqara Forum FP300 owner saw 78 lx in bright sun and rare updates with battery-saving Matter defaults. On the other side, a SmartThings owner said the MYGGSPRAY reports on change. Practical advice from those facts: use a threshold with margin and test the automation in your actual room — don't expect exact lux values.
Thread or Wi-Fi: what you need
Three of the five products MatterCheck tracks are Thread end devices — the Aqara P2, Aqara FP300 and Meross MS605 — so they need a Thread border router plus the platform's Matter hub. The Shelly Presence Gen4 (USB-C mains powered) and the Intecular InvisOutlet Pro (in-wall outlet) are Wi-Fi and don't need a border router. The platform side is the same for both: Apple recommends a home hub and needs one for automations, Google needs a Google/Nest Matter hub, Alexa a Matter-enabled Echo or eero, SmartThings a SmartThings-compatible hub, and Home Assistant its Matter Server. See our hubs page and the Thread vs Wi-Fi guide.
Matter light sensors we track
MatterCheck tracks no standalone Matter light sensor; each of these exposes a Light Sensor endpoint alongside its main job.
- Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 — Thread. A motion sensor with a light sensor endpoint. Aqara said illuminance wasn't available on Alexa at launch; community reports describe a ~1,500 lux reporting cap with lux reported on motion or on a poll to save battery.
- Aqara Presence Multi-Sensor FP300 — Thread. A presence sensor that also exposes light and temperature/humidity endpoints. Aqara says illuminance is not exposed on Alexa.
- Meross Smart Presence Sensor MS605 — Thread. A radar-plus-PIR presence sensor with a light sensor endpoint. Meross notes Alexa doesn't currently support its light sensor.
- Shelly Presence Gen4 — Wi-Fi, USB-C mains powered. A mmWave still-presence sensor with built-in ambient light states (dark/twilight/bright) plus a standard Illuminance Measurement endpoint.
- Intecular InvisOutlet Pro — Wi-Fi, in-wall outlet. Its Matter endpoints include a light sensor among several sensors (temperature, humidity, air quality, occupancy, pressure).
The IKEA MYGGSPRAY, used in several of the tests above, isn't in our tracked product list yet.
Which platform is best for a Matter light sensor?
Apple Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant all let light level start an automation and have dated tests (for example homekit.reviews on Apple Home and SmartHomeScene on Home Assistant), so they're the strongest choices. Home Assistant shows the lux value as its own sensor entity and supports numeric thresholds, which makes a light-level rule easy to tune. Google Home works only through the Script Editor, and Alexa is the weakest for light level. If your main platform is Google or Alexa, Matter multi-admin lets the same sensor also join a platform that can use its light level — see our multi-admin page and the multi-admin guide. For the full platform picture, see the platform comparison guide.

How we checked
Values come from the MatterCheck matrix v1.15; the light sensor values were last checked 2026-10-17 to 2026-10-19. High confidence needs an official statement covering the feature plus a dated hands-on test of the device type on that platform. Vendor claims and owner reports alone keep a value at Med. A starter that works only in Google's Script Editor counts as Partial. See our methodology, the light sensor page and hubs page.
