Shelly and Matter: which Shelly devices work with Matter, Wi-Fi not Thread, and how to set them up

All Gen4 Shelly devices and selected Gen3 models support Matter over Wi-Fi, not Thread. You still need a Matter hub or controller for your platform, and Shelly says Gen3 models that support Matter need firmware 1.6 or later plus a manual enable step before they show a Matter setup code.

Shelly's support articles carry different modified dates, and some steps are tied to firmware versions: Gen3 Matter needs firmware 1.6 or later, firmware 1.8 adds a 15-minute setup window, and the Gen4 Zigbee switch works differently below and above firmware 1.7.0. Check your device's web interface and Shelly's current articles for the exact steps.

Which Shelly devices support Matter

Shelly's Matter device list lists the native Matter-compatible devices. The Shelly Plug S Gen 3 fully supports Matter out of the box. Seven Gen3 relay models support Matter with firmware version 1.6.0 beta or newer: Shelly 1 Gen 3, Shelly 1PM Gen 3, Shelly Mini 1 Gen 3, Shelly Mini 1PM Gen 3, Shelly 2PM Gen 3, Shelly 1L Gen 3, and Shelly 2L Gen 3. All Gen4 Shelly devices come with Matter support built in, with no additional setup required.

Shelly's network design guide is more specific about the generation boundary. Gen1 devices have no Matter. Gen2 Plus and Gen2 Pro devices have no Matter either, even though Gen2 Pro supports IPv6 inbound on firmware 1.4.0 or later. Gen3 devices support Matter only on some models, and it is not included by default: you need firmware 1.6 or newer and a manual enable step under Settings > Matter. Gen4 devices include Matter natively and enabled by default.

For older Shelly devices without native Matter support, Shelly's Matter device list points to a Matter Bridge solution that lets Gen2 or earlier Gen3 devices appear in a Matter ecosystem without hardware changes. Shelly's Siri article also mentions a Matter bridge plugin as an option for non-Matter devices. MatterCheck tracks 11 Shelly products: Shelly 3EM-63 Gen3, Shelly 3EM-63 Gen4, Shelly EM Gen4, Shelly EM Mini Gen4, Shelly Flood Gen4, Shelly Flood S Gen4, Shelly Outdoor Plug S Gen3, Shelly Plug S MTR Gen3, Shelly Plug US Gen4, Shelly Presence Gen4, and Shelly Pro 3EM. See the SKU list for product details, and check how to verify CSA certification before assuming a specific Gen3 model supports Matter.

Wi-Fi, not Thread: what you need

Shelly's Thread FAQ is direct: Shelly devices do not support Matter over Thread, and this is not currently planned. What Matter support exists is over Wi-Fi. All Gen4 devices and selected Gen3 devices use Matter over Wi-Fi. So if you searched for Shelly Matter over Thread, the answer from Shelly is no, and Shelly says Thread support is not currently planned.

Shelly's network design guide says Matter uses IPv6 for all post-commissioning communication, so IPv4 alone is not enough. Gen3 and Gen4 devices support IPv6 and are the only generations that support Matter. The guide also says a Matter-compatible hub is required, and lists common options: Apple TV (4K), Amazon Echo (4th gen or later), Samsung SmartThings Hub, and Google Nest Hub (2nd gen). Shelly's Apple Home article states plainly that a Matter hub is required and that Shelly does not offer Matter hubs. The hub, your phone, and the Shelly device must all be on the same network during commissioning, and IPv6 must be enabled on your router.

Each platform has its own hub requirements. Apple's Matter page says you can add and control Matter accessories from the Home app without a home hub on an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, but says that "for the best experience" you should set up a home hub. Google's Matter page says you need a Matter-enabled hub device set up on your home wireless network before adding Matter devices. Amazon's Alexa page says to install your Matter device within 30 ft of a compatible Alexa hub or device. SmartThings' Matter page says a Matter Controller is the hub responsible for controlling the device after onboarding. Compare Matter over Thread vs Wi-Fi and see which hubs and Thread border routers you need.

Where the Shelly Matter setup code is

For Gen4 devices, Shelly's Apple Home article says the Matter QR code is on the device packaging, and an included sticker can be attached to the device itself. You can also find the QR code in the device's web interface under the Matter tab. For Gen3 devices, the setup code does not exist until you enable Matter: Shelly's Gen3 enable guide says that after you enable Matter and reboot, a QR setup code appears on the screen in the web interface, and you can scan it or enter the 11-digit manual code in your Matter-compatible app.

Shelly's network design guide notes that firmware 1.8 adds a 15-minute setup window from first power-on. If you miss that window or lose the code, see what to do when you lose a Matter setup code.

How to turn on Matter on a Shelly Gen3 device

Shelly's Gen3 enable guide describes the full process for Gen3 and newer devices that do not include Matter support in their firmware by default.

  1. Before you start, make sure you have a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network, a Matter-compatible hub connected to the Internet, a computer to access the device's web interface, and a mobile device with Bluetooth enabled and a Matter-compatible app installed. Install the device following its user and safety guide.
  2. On your computer, log in to the device's web interface.
  3. Connect the device to your local Wi-Fi network: in the Settings menu, select Wi-Fi, choose your network from the Network drop-down menu, and click Save settings.
  4. Update the device with the latest firmware: in the Settings menu, select Firmware, click Update, and after the update completes click Refresh Page Now. A Matter menu appears in the navigation panel.
  5. In the Matter menu, mark the Enable checkbox, then select Save and Reboot.
  6. Refresh the page. A QR setup code appears on the screen.
  7. On your mobile device, scan the QR setup code or enter the 11-digit manual code in your Matter-compatible app, then follow the on-screen instructions.

Gen4 devices need no enable step: Shelly's network design guide says you can scan the QR code on the device label directly in your Matter-compatible app.

How to add a Shelly device to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings

Each platform's own Matter page describes scanning the device's QR code or entering its setup code in that platform's app. See how to add a Matter device for the shared steps, and how Matter multi-admin works if you want the same Shelly device in more than one ecosystem.

Apple Home and Siri

Shelly's Apple Home article says to open the Apple Home app on your iPhone or iPad while your phone is on the same Wi-Fi network as the Matter hub, tap the + button, and select Add Accessory. Scan the Matter QR code from the Gen4 packaging, the included sticker, or the device's web interface Matter tab. Then follow the standard HomeKit setup steps: choose the home, assign a room, set a name, and define the appliance type. Apple's own Matter page says the Home app supports outlets, switches, lights, and sensors, and that paired Matter accessories sync using iCloud Keychain. Shelly's Siri article says Gen3 and Gen4 devices with Matter enabled can be added to Apple Home and then controlled with Siri voice commands; non-Matter Shelly devices can use Siri Shortcuts with HTTP actions or a Matter bridge plugin. See Apple Home's Matter support.

Google Home

Google's Matter page says you need a Matter-enabled hub device set up on your home wireless network before you can add Matter-enabled devices to Google Home. Google lists hubs that support Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread, including Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, Google TV Streamer (4K), and Google Home Speaker (2026). Google also says IPv6 must be enabled on your home wireless network, or setup may appear to succeed at first and then fail later. See Google Home's Matter support.

Alexa

Amazon's Alexa Matter page says to open the Alexa app, go to Devices, select the plus, choose Add Device, select the Matter icon from the Shortcuts bar, confirm you have a Matter device, then scan the Matter QR code or enter the pairing code. Amazon recommends installing your Matter device within 30 ft (9 m) of a compatible Alexa hub or device. See Alexa's Matter support.

SmartThings

SmartThings' Matter page says your mobile device with the SmartThings app acts as the Matter commissioner during onboarding, while a Matter controller hub controls the device afterward. To add a device, open the SmartThings app, select Add (+) and choose Add Device, tap Scan to scan the barcode, or select Enter under Enter setup code to type the setup code instead. Then select the hub and room, wait for the connection, and rename the device. See SmartThings' Matter support.

Gen4 Zigbee mode is not Matter

Gen4 devices can run an alternative Zigbee firmware, but this is a separate mode, not part of Matter. Shelly's network design guide says Gen4 devices default to IP mode with Wi-Fi, HTTP, WebSocket, MQTT, and Matter. In Zigbee mode, the device runs Zigbee only and leaves Wi-Fi entirely, meaning it has no IP address and therefore no Matter. The guide says the two cannot run simultaneously.

Shelly's Zigbee article describes how to switch. For firmware below 1.7.0, quickly press the device button 5 times and wait 5 to 10 seconds while the device switches to Zigbee firmware mode. For firmware 1.7.0 and above, switching is done only via the local web interface under Settings > Switch to Matter/Zigbee. Shelly's Plug US Gen4 product page also says five rapid consecutive pushes switch the device from Matter firmware (default) to Zigbee firmware. You need a Zigbee coordinator such as a Sonoff ZBDongle, ConBee II, or SkyConnect, plus controller software like Home Assistant with ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT. Zigbee OTA updates are not supported at this time; firmware updates must be performed in Wi-Fi/BLE mode. See Matter vs Zigbee and Z-Wave.

Shelly and Home Assistant

Home Assistant has two separate routes for Shelly devices. Its Shelly integration docs say all four generations of Shelly devices are supported by the integration. Shelly devices can be auto-discovered by Home Assistant, or you can add them manually by browsing to Settings > Devices & services. Its docs also say Gen2 and newer devices excluding battery-powered models can act as Bluetooth proxies, forwarding advertisement data. Shelly BLU series devices are not supported by the Shelly integration except the Shelly BLU TRV via a Shelly BLU Gateway Gen3 or other Shelly devices with built-in BLU TRV support.

Home Assistant's Matter integration is separate. It uses the Home Assistant Companion app for commissioning over Bluetooth, then the device communicates over Wi-Fi or Thread. You can add a Shelly Matter device directly to Home Assistant's Matter fabric, or share it from another controller such as Google or Apple. See Home Assistant's Matter support and Matter local control without internet.
