SONOFF and Matter: which SONOFF devices work with Matter, bridges for Zigbee, and how to set them up

A handful of SONOFF devices are Matter-certified: SONOFF's own setup guides list Wi-Fi smart switches such as the MINIR4M and M5 Matter, while newer SNZT sensors use Thread. Most other SONOFF Zigbee and Wi-Fi devices reach Matter platforms only through a SONOFF Matter bridge such as the Zigbee Bridge Ultra, iHost, NSPanel Pro, or the eWeLink CUBE software.

SONOFF's Help Center pages carry last-modified dates, several from 2025-06-23, and its device lists say more Matter-compatible devices are coming. Check SONOFF's current pages and the CSA's certified product list for newer models before you set anything up.

Which SONOFF devices support Matter

SONOFF's Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant setup guides all list the same four Matter-certified devices as directly compatible: the MINI-RBS Smart Roller Shutter Switch, the MINI-D Wi-Fi Smart Switch (dry contact relay), the MINIR4M MINI Extreme Wi-Fi Smart Switch, and the M5 Matter SwitchMan Smart Wall Switch. Each guide adds "Stay tuned for more SONOFF Matter-compatible devices," so this list is a snapshot, not a complete catalog.

SONOFF's communication standards page adds two Fusion Series models to that native Matter list: the Fusion Series Orb-RBS and the Fusion Series Orb-MW1, both described as Matter over Wi-Fi. MatterCheck's own data, built from CSA certification records, tracks additional SONOFF Matter products that don't appear in those Help Center lists: the AirGuard PM2.5/PM10 Air Quality Monitor (SAWF-07P), a Wi-Fi air quality sensor; the Human Presence Sensor (SNWF-06P24), a Wi-Fi motion/occupancy sensor; the Smart Plug (S60TPF-M), a Wi-Fi plug; and three Thread sensors — the Smart Door/Window Sensor (SNZT-04P), the Smart Motion Sensor (SNZT-03P), and the Smart Temperature And Humidity Sensor (SNZT-02B).

You can browse the full MatterCheck product list on the SKUs page, and use the CSA certification checker guide to verify any SONOFF model you're considering. The CSA's product listing for the Smart Motion Sensor (SNZT-03P) describes it as "a Thread and Zigbee motion sensor" with Transport Interface "Thread, Bluetooth" and Matter Specification Version 1.5. SONOFF's Apple Home guide and communication standards page are the places to check for SONOFF's own current lists.

Wi-Fi or Thread: what you need

SONOFF's setup guides describe the four devices they list — MINI-RBS, MINI-D, MINIR4M, and M5 Matter — as Matter over Wi-Fi devices that connect to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and need no Thread border router. SONOFF's Home Assistant guide says SONOFF offers Wi-Fi-based Matter devices that connect directly to your network, with no Thread border router required. SONOFF's MINIR4M page lists the switch's wireless connectivity as 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b/g/n).

The newer SNZT sensors are different. MatterCheck tracks three SONOFF sensors whose CSA records list Thread as the transport: the Smart Door/Window Sensor (SNZT-04P), Smart Motion Sensor (SNZT-03P), and Smart Temperature And Humidity Sensor (SNZT-02B). The CSA's listing for the SNZT-03P says its transport interface is "Thread, Bluetooth." These Thread devices need a Thread border router on your network, in addition to a Matter controller from the platform you're using. See Thread vs Wi-Fi and hubs and Thread border routers for the full picture.

Even for Wi-Fi Matter devices, each platform still needs its own controller or hub. SONOFF's Apple guide requires an Apple Home hub such as a HomePod or Apple TV; its Google guide says a Google Home hub is needed for automations and remote control; its Alexa guide requires a Matter-compatible Echo; and its SmartThings guide lists the SmartThings Station, Aeotec Smart Home Hub, SmartThings Hub V3, or a Samsung Galaxy phone with One UI 5.0+. Apple's own Matter accessory page notes that with iOS 18 or later you can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub, though it still recommends one. Google's Matter preparation page says you need a Matter-enabled hub device set up on your network before adding Matter devices, and that IPv6 must be enabled.

SONOFF Matter bridges for Zigbee and older Wi-Fi devices

SONOFF's Apple Home guide explains the bridge concept clearly: non-Matter devices, "including legacy WiFi and Zigbee Devices," can be integrated through Matter Bridge solutions. It describes two routes. The first is eWeLink CUBE, which SONOFF calls "a free self-hosted local software that bridges eWeLink Wi-Fi and multi-brand Zigbee devices into the Matter network for Apple Home, SmartThings, Google Home, Alexa, and Home Assistant." The second is plug-and-play hardware: "ZBBridge-U, iHost and NSPanel Pro provide built-in Matter Bridge functionality."

SONOFF's communication standards page is more conservative: its Matter-bridge table lists only the Zigbee Bridge Ultra and the SONOFF iHost, and its Zigbee gateway table marks the Zigbee Bridge Pro as "No" for Matter-Bridge. The two SONOFF pages differ on NSPanel Pro, so check SONOFF's current page before relying on that model as a Matter bridge. The Zigbee Bridge Ultra supports up to 256 sub-devices per that page.

SONOFF's Zigbee Bridge Ultra device list shows what bridged devices can actually do in Matter platforms, and the caveats matter. SNZB-01 and SNZB-01P buttons are "Recognized as a switch device, uncontrollable in Google Home. Not supported in Alexa." For the SNZB-02 family of temperature and humidity sensors, "Humidity is not supported in Alexa." The SWV-NH and SWV-BSP water valves are "Supported only in Google Home. Alexa, Apple Home and Smartthings don't support water valve as a device type." For ZBCurtain, "Percentage control is inaccurate when the motor is not calibrated." The list also covers third-party Zigbee 3.0 devices by category — plugs, switches, sensors, lights, dimmers, curtains, thermostats, buttons, and water valves — and a long list of SONOFF Wi-Fi models it can expose, including BASICR2, MINIR4, S31, DUALR3, and many others. A bridged device is not itself Matter-certified; the bridge translates for it. See bridging Zigbee devices and Matter vs Zigbee and Z-Wave.

Where the SONOFF Matter setup code is and how to start pairing

SONOFF's guides consistently say to scan the Matter QR code on the device itself or on the product Quick Guide. If the QR code isn't convenient, SONOFF's Home Assistant guide says you can "click Enable Pairing Mode in the Device Settings of the eWeLink app to generate a QR code or Copy code." The numeric setup code is also in the eWeLink app under Device Settings, per SONOFF's Apple, Google, Alexa, and SmartThings troubleshooting sections.

For pairing mode, SONOFF's Apple and SmartThings guides say the device "enters the pairing mode by default when powered on for the first time, and the LED indicator flashes two short and one long." If it doesn't, "press and hold the button for 5–10 seconds to reset and enter pairing mode." The Google and Alexa guides describe the LED as blinking rapidly in pairing mode. Those guides use the MINIR4M and M5 Matter as their examples, so don't assume every SONOFF Matter model behaves identically. If you've lost the code, see what to do with a lost setup code.

How to add a SONOFF Matter device to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant

Each platform has its own onboarding flow, but they all start with a powered-on SONOFF device in pairing mode and a Matter QR code or numeric setup code. For the general pattern, see how to add a Matter device; for sharing one device across platforms, see multi-admin sharing.

Apple Home

SONOFF's Apple Home guide requires an iPhone or iPad running iOS 16.3 or later, a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network, and an Apple Home hub such as a HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV. In the Home app, tap "+" then "Add or Scan Accessory," scan the Matter QR code, and follow the prompts to assign a room and name. Apple's own Matter accessory page says the Home app supports Matter air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, outlets, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, and sensors including motion, ambient light, contact, temperature, and humidity. See Apple Home Matter support.

Google Home

SONOFF's Google Home guide requires Android 8.1+ with Google Play Services for Matter, or iOS 16.5+ with the Google Home app. In the Google Home app, tap the plus (+) button, then Add device and New device, pick the home, choose Matter-enabled device and scan the QR code. SONOFF says a Google Home hub is required for automations and remote control, but not for basic local control from your phone. Google's Matter preparation page adds that IPv6 must be enabled on your network, and that hubs like the Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer support Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread. See Google Home Matter support.

Alexa

SONOFF's Alexa guide requires a Matter-compatible Alexa controller such as an Echo 4th Gen, Echo Dot 5th Gen, or Echo Show 8 (2nd Gen or later), connected to the same 2.4GHz Wi-Fi as your phone and with firmware up to date. In the Alexa app, go to Devices, tap "+", choose Add Device, select Other then Matter, confirm the QR code, and scan it. Amazon's Matter setup page recommends installing your Matter device within 30 ft (9 m) of a compatible Alexa hub, and says Thread-based devices need a Thread-enabled Alexa device online. See Alexa Matter support.

SmartThings

SONOFF's SmartThings guide requires a Matter controller such as a SmartThings Station, Aeotec Smart Home Hub, SmartThings Hub V3, or a Samsung Galaxy phone with One UI 5.0+. In the SmartThings app, tap Add device, scan the Matter QR code, and follow the prompts. SmartThings' own Matter integration page explains that your phone acts as the Matter commissioner during onboarding, while the hub becomes the controller afterward, and that the Matter badge on packaging indicates whether a Thread border router is needed. See SmartThings Matter support.

Home Assistant

SONOFF's Home Assistant guide requires the latest Home Assistant OS, the Matter integration installed, the Home Assistant Companion app on your phone, and a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. In the Companion app, go to Settings > Devices & Services, add the Matter integration, select "No, it's new," scan the QR code or enter the commission code manually, and tap "Add to Home Assistant." Home Assistant's Matter integration docs note that Bluetooth is used during commissioning but not for control, and that your phone must be close to the device during pairing. See Home Assistant Matter support.

Firmware updates, local control and sharing between apps

SONOFF's Home Assistant guide says you can't update the firmware of SONOFF Matter devices through Home Assistant; you update it in the eWeLink app instead. So keep the eWeLink app installed for firmware updates even if you primarily use another platform. See how Matter firmware updates work.

Once paired, SONOFF's guides say Matter operates locally without cloud dependency. The Google guide says "Once paired, SONOFF Matter devices can operate locally through your Wi-Fi network," and the Alexa guide says local Wi-Fi control continues without internet, "although cloud features like remote access require a connection." SONOFF's SmartThings guide makes the same distinction. Multi-admin is supported across SONOFF's guides: after pairing with one platform, you can share the device with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant. See local control without internet. Note that SONOFF also has separate non-Matter cloud integrations for Alexa and Google Home; those are a different path from Matter and not covered here.

What MatterCheck's data says for SONOFF's device types

MatterCheck's platform results are per Matter device type and platform, not tests of SONOFF products. MatterCheck tracks 6 SONOFF products out of 391 products in total, and the table below shows the five Matter device types they fall under across seven platforms.

Each entry: pairs / usable as an automation trigger (confidence), per Matter device type in MatterCheck's data — not a test of SONOFF products.

MatterCheck checks 27 Matter device types on 7 platforms. These results are per Matter device type, not tests of the SONOFF products themselves, and the confidence label shows how sure MatterCheck is about each result. Contact sensors, motion / occupancy sensors and temperature / humidity sensors show Yes for pairing and for automation triggers on Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant and Homey, while Hubitat shows Unknown. Smart plugs pair on all seven platforms, though Alexa shows Unknown for using a plug as an automation trigger. Air quality sensors are the uneven type: Google Home shows Partial and Alexa shows Unknown for automation triggers. See the MatterCheck platform matrix, the platform comparison and the air quality sensor guide for the detail.

Frequently asked questions

Do SONOFF devices work with Matter?

Yes, but only specific models. SONOFF's setup guides list the MINI-RBS, MINI-D, MINIR4M, and M5 Matter as Matter-certified, and its communication standards page adds the Fusion Series Orb-RBS and Orb-MW1. MatterCheck also tracks newer SONOFF Matter products from CSA records, including Thread sensors and a Wi-Fi air quality monitor.

Do SONOFF Matter devices use Thread?

Some do. The devices in SONOFF's setup guides are Matter over Wi-Fi and need no Thread border router. But MatterCheck tracks three newer SONOFF sensors — SNZT-02B, SNZT-03P, and SNZT-04P — whose CSA records list Thread, so those need a Thread border router.

Do I need a SONOFF hub for Matter?

Not for SONOFF's native Matter devices. They pair directly with your platform's Matter controller over Wi-Fi or Thread. A SONOFF hub is only needed if you want to bridge non-Matter SONOFF Zigbee or Wi-Fi devices into Matter, using something like the Zigbee Bridge Ultra, iHost, NSPanel Pro, or eWeLink CUBE.

Can SONOFF Zigbee sensors work with Apple Home?

Yes, but through a Matter bridge, not directly. SONOFF's Apple Home guide says non-Matter Zigbee devices can be integrated using eWeLink CUBE software or hardware bridges like the ZBBridge-U, iHost, and NSPanel Pro. The bridged sensor itself isn't Matter-certified; the bridge translates for it.

Does SONOFF work with Home Assistant over Matter?

Yes. SONOFF's Home Assistant guide walks through adding the M5 Matter switch using the Matter integration and the Companion app. Once paired, control is local, and SONOFF says no Thread border router is needed for its Wi-Fi Matter devices.

Can I update SONOFF Matter firmware from Home Assistant?

No. SONOFF's Home Assistant guide says firmware updates for SONOFF Matter devices must be done in the eWeLink app, not through Home Assistant.

Can one SONOFF Matter device be in two apps at once?

Yes, via Matter multi-admin. SONOFF's guides say you can share a device with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant after initial pairing, as long as the device supports it. Home Assistant's docs note the standard expects at least five fabrics per device.
