Matter speakers: which smart speakers work with Matter, and what a Matter speaker can do
In Matter, "Speaker" is a device type that controls only volume and mute according to the Connectivity Standards Alliance's Matter Device Library Specification 1.4.2. The smart speakers people already own — Echo, Google Home / Nest speakers, and HomePod — appear in their makers' pages as Matter hubs or controllers, not as Matter speakers. MatterCheck's data shows Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant support the Speaker type while Apple Home and Alexa don't. The Sonos pages checked here don't mention Matter at all.
Three things a Matter speaker can mean
People use "Matter speaker" in three different ways, so it helps to separate them before checking compatibility. A smart speaker can act as a Matter hub or controller for other devices, a device can expose the Matter Speaker device type 0x0022, or someone can mean playing music over Matter. Those are different roles, and a product can have one without the other.
- Smart speaker as a Matter hub or controller. Google's hub list names specific Google Home and Nest speakers, Amazon says a compatible Echo is a "Matter administrator," Apple's HomePod and HomePod mini automatically become home hubs, and Home Assistant lists Apple HomePod speakers and some newer Amazon Echo devices among Matter controllers. A hub role is separate from being a Matter speaker device; see the full hub lists in Matter hubs and Thread border routers.
- A device using the Matter Speaker device type. The Connectivity Standards Alliance's spec defines
0x0022Speaker as a type that controls speaker volume and mute. It is not music playback, and it is not the same as a smart speaker that simply has a voice assistant. - Playing music over Matter. The pages here don't describe music streaming or multi-room audio over Matter. The Matter SDK lists audio player device types, but no platform or shipping speaker support for them is named here; see the music section below.
Reading a box or a platform list can be confusing because the phrase "Matter speaker" might describe a hub role rather than the Speaker device type. Google's Prepare your smart home for Matter page says you need a Matter-enabled hub to add Matter-enabled devices, control them locally, and control them remotely. Amazon's Matter page says Matter-supported Echo devices can connect and control Matter smart home devices. Those statements are about speakers acting as hubs or administrators for other products. The CSA's Speaker type, by contrast, controls only the speaker volume of the device. Knowing which meaning a box or list uses helps you avoid expecting music playback from the Speaker type, or missing a hub requirement.
In short, a Google Home, Nest, Echo or HomePod can be a Matter hub without exposing itself as a Matter Speaker. The sections below treat the device type and the hub role separately.
Matter speakers at a glance
The table below condenses what the sources on this page say about the Matter Speaker device type, the hub roles of well-known smart speakers, and platform support. It is not a buying guide or a compatibility promise.

Each row names its source, and the details follow in the sections below. MatterCheck's own Speaker type page tracks the Matter Speaker device type separately from music playback.
What the Matter Speaker device type controls
The Connectivity Standards Alliance's Matter Device Library Specification 1.4.2 says the Speaker device type "controls the speaker volume of the device." For unmute and mute, the On/Off cluster 0x0006 is used: TRUE for the OnOff attribute means volume on, or not muted, and FALSE means volume off, or muted. For volume level, the Level Control cluster 0x0008 is used. Those are the two mandatory server clusters for the type.
The spec explains that a dedicated endpoint is needed because On/Off can also be used for power control. Volume is treated like lighting, which uses the same clusters and has similar functional requirements. In the same spec, a Video Player's volume control uses a Speaker endpoint, while media playback — Play, Pause, Stop, Rewind, and Fast Forward — is handled by a separate Media Playback cluster feature of video players. So the Speaker type on its own doesn't include starting, pausing or choosing music.
Google Home's developer pages align with that: the supported device types table lists Speaker with Level Control and On/Off at Matter 1.0, and the supported clusters page maps Level Control and On/Off to "Volume for Speaker device types." In practice, a Matter speaker alone gives a platform a volume level and a mute switch, not a way to control music playback.
What a platform can show is still limited to those two functions. Home Assistant's 2025.11 changelog added a Matter speaker mute toggle, and its 2026.1 changelog added Matter Speaker volume LevelControl, so a Matter speaker there can appear as a mute switch and a volume control. Google's Script Editor page describes a Volume state with currentVolume and isMuted, which lines up with the spec's On/Off mute state and Level Control volume level. That is what automations would read or change. It doesn't add media playback or track-selection controls.
Which devices are Matter speakers?
Matter Survey, a community-driven database with data contributed by Matter Binding Helper users, lists five devices implementing Speaker 0x0022. All five are Philips Smart TV / PHILIPS_TV entries from Top Victory. Matter Survey isn't an official or complete list; it reflects only the data its community contributes.
No page checked here names a shipping smart speaker — an Echo, Nest, HomePod, Sonos or SYMFONISK speaker — as a Matter Speaker device. MatterCheck tracks no speaker products among its tracked products. If you want to check a product's own Matter certification, see how to check whether a product is Matter-certified.
The Philips Smart TV entries in Matter Survey make more sense next to the CSA Device Library's video player section: a video player's volume control uses a Speaker endpoint, while play, pause, stop, rewind, and fast forward are handled by the separate Media Playback cluster. That is consistent with, not proof of, why TVs would appear on the Speaker page: a TV can expose a Speaker endpoint for volume without the Speaker type describing the screen or media controls. Matter Survey is a community database, and its list only reflects devices contributed by Matter Binding Helper users. The pages checked here list no smart speaker as a Matter Speaker device.
Which platforms support a Matter speaker
MatterCheck checks 24 Matter device types, and Matter Speaker is one of them. The results below are for that type, meaning volume and mute control.
| Platform | Pairs a Matter speaker | Controls volume / mute | Automation trigger | Automation action | MatterCheck confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | No | No | No | No | High |
| Google Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Med |
| Alexa | No | No | No | No | Med |
| SmartThings | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Med |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Med |
These results cover volume and mute only, not music playback or multi-room audio. The five platform sections add the source pages behind those results.
Apple Home
Apple's Pair and manage your Matter accessories page lists the Matter accessory types the Home app supports, and speakers are not on it. The Works with Apple Home badge guidelines list supported product categories, and speakers are not among them. MatterCheck's result is No at High confidence. See Apple Home Matter support for more on the platform.
For someone in the Apple Home app, this means a HomePod or HomePod mini can still be a home hub even though speakers are not on the supported accessory list on Apple's Pair and manage your Matter accessories page. Apple's home hub page says HomePod and HomePod mini automatically become home hubs, and that home hub role is separate from a Matter Speaker device. The No result is specifically about the Speaker device type, not about using HomePods as controllers for other Matter accessories.
Google Home
Google's supported device types table has a Speaker row with Level Control and On/Off, and its supported clusters page maps those clusters to "Volume for Speaker device types." MatterCheck's result is Yes at Med confidence. See Google Home Matter support.
For a Google Home user, the Speaker type is in Google's developer table, but the consumer automation entries should be read carefully: Google's support page describes a volume starter and a set-volume action for media devices generally, not Matter speakers specifically. So those consumer entries aren't evidence about Matter speakers in particular, while MatterCheck's Yes result covers the Speaker device type. The hub requirement also remains separate: Google's hub page says a Matter-enabled hub device is needed to add Matter devices.
Alexa
Amazon's Alexa Supported Matter Device Categories page lists categories such as lighting, sensors, locks, thermostats and appliances, but speakers aren't in that list. MatterCheck's result is No at Med confidence. See Alexa Matter support.
For an Alexa home, the No result covers the Speaker device type, not the Echo's role with other Matter products. Amazon's Matter page says the Echo device is the Matter administrator used to discover and connect Matter devices, so a Matter-enabled Echo can still add and control compatible lights, locks, sensors, and other listed categories. That administrator role is separate from exposing a Matter Speaker endpoint.
SmartThings
SmartThings' Connect Matter Devices with SmartThings partners page lists Speaker under More Devices. MatterCheck's result is Yes at Med confidence. See SmartThings Matter support.
For a SmartThings home, the partners page lists Speaker under More Devices, alongside Basic Video Player, and MatterCheck's result for the type is Yes. That is still volume and mute, not media playback. MatterCheck's result also comes with a hub note: "SmartThings-compatible hub required (standalone hub, Samsung TV, Station, etc.)." So MatterCheck's SmartThings result assumes a SmartThings hub; Speaker support doesn't remove that requirement.
Home Assistant
Home Assistant's 2025.11 changelog lists "Add Matter speaker mute toggle," and the 2026.1 changelog lists "Matter Speaker volume LevelControl." MatterCheck's result is Yes at Med confidence, with 2026.1 as the minimum for volume and mute from 2025.11. See Home Assistant Matter support.
For Home Assistant, the Yes result for Speaker means volume and mute controls are part of Home Assistant Matter support, but the platform also describes itself as a "controller" in a Matter ecosystem on the Matter integration page. That page says to make sure there is a Thread border router device present, and its examples are HomePod Mini or V2, Apple TV 4K, or Home Assistant with the OpenThread Border Router app. Those are border-router examples, not Matter Speaker devices.
Smart speakers that are Matter hubs
The table below summarizes which well-known smart speakers are named in official hub or Thread border router lists. A speaker's hub role doesn't make it a Matter Speaker device.
| Speaker | Matter role, per its maker or platform | Thread border router? | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Home Speaker (2026) | Google's support page lists Google Home Speaker (2026) as a hub for Google Home with Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread; it says no special setup is required. | Google lists it under 'Hubs for Google Home (Wi-Fi and Thread)', for homes that need a hub that also works as a Thread border router. | Google Home Help 12391458 |
| Nest Audio, Nest Mini, Google Home Mini, Google Home | Google lists Nest Audio, Nest Mini, Google Home Mini and Google Home in its 'Hubs for Google Home (Wi-Fi only)' list as supporting Matter over Wi-Fi. | They are not in Google's Wi-Fi and Thread hub list; the pages here don't say they are Thread border routers. | Google Home Help 12391458 |
| Amazon Echo devices | Amazon's Matter page says Matter-supported Echo devices can connect and control Matter devices, and that the Echo device is the Matter administrator. | Amazon's Thread page lists Echo (4th Gen) as Thread 1.1; other listed Echo models are Thread 1.3. | Amazon Alexa Matter docs · Amazon Alexa Thread docs |
| HomePod and HomePod mini | Apple Support says HomePod mini and HomePod automatically become home hubs when set up. | Apple 102135 lists HomePod (2nd generation) and HomePod mini as Thread-enabled home hubs. | Apple 102557 · Apple 102135 |
| Sonos speakers | Sonos's pages here don't mention Matter. Its One guide names Sonos Voice Control, Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri via AirPlay 2-compatible speakers added to Apple Home. | The Sonos pages here don't say Sonos speakers are Thread border routers. | Sonos One user guide · Sonos system release notes |
| IKEA SYMFONISK | IKEA's DIRIGERA Matter Bridge news (11 September 2024) says IKEA 'sound' products will be supported. SYMFONISK is set up in the Sonos app; no page here says how it appears over Matter. | The pages here don't say SYMFONISK is a Thread border router. | Sonos: set up SYMFONISK · IKEA Ireland: SYMFONISK and voice · IKEA newsroom (11 September 2024) |
Google's Prepare your smart home for Matter page says you need a Matter-enabled hub device to add Matter devices, control them locally and remotely. Under "Hubs for Google Home (Wi-Fi only)," the listed speakers are Google Home Speaker, Nest Audio, Nest Mini, Google Home Mini and Google Home. Under "Hubs for Google Home (Wi-Fi and Thread)," the one speaker listed is Google Home Speaker (2026). For homes with Thread devices, Google says you need a hub that also works as a Thread border router. Google devices that work as a hub need no special setup.
Amazon's Connect Your Device to Alexa with Matter page says Matter-supported Echo devices can connect and control Matter smart home devices, and the Echo device is the "Matter administrator." Amazon's Thread support page lists Echo (4th Gen) as Thread 1.1 and several other Echo models as Thread 1.3.
Apple's home hub page says HomePod and HomePod mini automatically become home hubs and that you must set up a home hub to add Matter accessories. Apple's Matter accessories page adds that an iPhone with iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub, and lists HomePod (2nd generation) and HomePod mini as Thread-enabled hubs. Home Assistant's Matter integration names Google Nest products, Apple HomePod speakers, Samsung SmartThings Station and some newer Amazon Echo devices as examples of Matter controllers. IKEA US says Matter-enabled IKEA products work with Apple Home using a HomePod or Apple TV as the controller, and with Google Nest and Amazon Echo devices. For the difference between transport options, see Thread vs Wi-Fi in Matter.
Can Matter stream music to a speaker?
The Matter SDK's TV example lists four media player device types: Basic Video Player 0x0028, Casting Video Player 0x0023, Streaming Audio Player 0x0020 (commissionable, with media playback and content launch) and Casting Audio Player 0x0021 (a commissioner). Those audio player types show that Matter's media model exists in the SDK, but no page here says any platform or shipping speaker supports 0x0020 or 0x0021. These pages also don't describe music streaming or multi-room audio over Matter.
Google's consumer automation starters and actions page has rows for volume on a media device, including a starter added January 12, 2026 and a set-volume action that "doesn't support muting." Those rows are about media devices generally, not Matter speakers specifically. Sonos's One user guide, in contrast, describes voice control through Sonos Voice Control, Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri (with AirPlay2-compatible speakers in the Apple Home app), and doesn't mention Matter. For Matter Casting on TVs, see Matter TV hubs and casting.
Sonos and Matter
None of the Sonos pages checked here mention Matter. The One user guide's Voice services section describes Sonos Voice Control, Amazon Alexa (with the Sonos app and the Alexa app with the Sonos skill), Google Assistant (with the Sonos app and the Google Assistant app), and Siri by adding AirPlay2-compatible Sonos speakers to the Apple Home app — "currently limited to Apple Music." The Sonos system release notes from 10/29/2024 to 10/6/2026 do not mention Matter.
A September 16, 2025 release note in those notes announces Sonos Voice Control for Philips Hue lights and plugs, with a Hue Bridge and linked Sonos and Hue accounts. That is a linked-account voice feature, not Matter. Because Matter isn't mentioned in these Sonos pages, a Sonos speaker isn't shown here as a Matter hub or Thread border router. Sonos's plans aren't stated on these pages, so this guide won't predict them.
A Sonos owner reading these pages can control a Sonos system by voice through Sonos Voice Control, Amazon Alexa with the Sonos skill, Google Assistant with the Sonos app and Google Assistant app, or Siri by adding AirPlay2-compatible Sonos speakers to the Apple Home app, where Siri playback is currently limited to Apple Music. That Apple Home route is the one Sonos describes for Siri voice control, not a Matter pairing. The pages here do not say a Sonos speaker appears as a Matter Speaker device or works through Matter, so this page doesn't treat a Sonos speaker as a Matter speaker.
IKEA SYMFONISK and Matter
Sonos's SYMFONISK setup page says its instructions apply to all available SYMFONISK products, and the Sonos app guides setup. IKEA Ireland's SYMFONISK voice control answer says there is no built-in voice functionality, but the Sonos system can be controlled with Amazon Alexa using an Echo or Dot, and with Google Home.
IKEA's DIRIGERA Matter Bridge news from 11 September 2024 says the DIRIGERA hub becomes a Matter Bridge and that "IKEA products within lighting, sound, air purification, remote controllers, and sensors will be supported." No page here says how a SYMFONISK speaker shows up on Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings or Home Assistant through DIRIGERA, or which Matter device type it uses. For how Matter bridges work with Zigbee devices, see Matter bridges for Zigbee devices.
Automations with a Matter speaker
MatterCheck's data says Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant can trigger automations from and run automation actions on a Matter speaker at Med confidence; Apple Home and Alexa show No. Those results are still for volume and mute, not music playback.
Google's Script Editor developer page lists Mute and SetVolume commands and a Volume state with currentVolume and isMuted. Home Assistant's 2025.11 changelog added a Matter speaker mute toggle, and the 2026.1 changelog added Matter Speaker volume LevelControl. Google's consumer volume starter rows on the support page are about media devices generally, not Matter speakers specifically.
Two automation patterns are visible in the pages here. In Google's Script Editor, a Volume state has currentVolume and isMuted, and the page lists Mute and SetVolume commands, so an automation could branch on whether a Matter speaker is muted or set a specific volume level. In Home Assistant, the 2025.11 changelog added a Matter speaker mute toggle and the 2026.1 changelog added Matter Speaker volume LevelControl, so an automation could use those controls. These are possibilities the pages describe, not tested steps for a specific product.
Before you pair a Matter speaker: what to check
- Check whether your platform supports the Speaker device type. Apple's supported Matter accessory types and Amazon's Alexa Matter categories don't list speakers, while the platform table above shows the MatterCheck results.
- Check that the product actually exposes the Matter Speaker device type, not just that it is a smart speaker with a voice assistant. See the device list section above.
- Have a Matter hub available if your platform needs one. Google's hub page says a Matter-enabled hub is needed to add devices in Google Home; Apple's home hub page says you must set up a home hub to add Matter accessories, and Amazon's Matter page says the Echo is the Matter administrator.
- For Thread-based devices, have a Thread border router. Google has separate Wi-Fi and Thread lists, and Amazon's Thread page lists Echo border routers. Apple lists HomePod (2nd generation) and HomePod mini as Thread-enabled hubs.
- Expect volume and mute only from a Matter Speaker device. The CSA Device Library 1.4.2 doesn't define play, pause, track selection or streaming for this type.
- For Home Assistant, use 2026.1 or later for volume; the mute toggle came in 2025.11. See the 2026.1 changelog and the platform section above. For the general pairing steps, see how to add a Matter device.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Matter speaker?
In the Connectivity Standards Alliance's device library, Speaker 0x0022 is a device type that controls speaker volume: On/Off handles mute and unmute, and Level Control handles volume level. It doesn't include music playback controls. "Matter speaker" can also mean a smart speaker that acts as a Matter hub or controller. MatterCheck checks 24 Matter device types in its own data, and Matter Speaker is one of them; the five Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant results for that type are in the platform table above.
Are Amazon Echo speakers Matter speakers?
Amazon's Matter page describes a Matter-supported Echo as the Matter administrator that discovers and connects Matter devices to Alexa, not as a device that exposes the Matter Speaker device type. Amazon's Matter categories list doesn't include speakers. So an Echo isn't shown here as a Matter Speaker device.
Is a Google Nest speaker a Matter hub?
Yes. Google's hub list names Google Home Speaker, Nest Audio, Nest Mini, Google Home Mini and Google Home under "Hubs for Google Home (Wi-Fi only)", and Google Home Speaker (2026) as the one speaker in its Wi-Fi and Thread list. That hub role is separate from being a Matter Speaker device.
Does Sonos support Matter?
None of the Sonos pages checked here mention Matter. Sonos's One guide covers Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri and Sonos Voice Control, and its release notes don't mention Matter. This page doesn't predict Sonos's plans.
Do IKEA SYMFONISK speakers work with Matter?
IKEA's DIRIGERA hub becomes a Matter Bridge, and IKEA says IKEA products within sound will be supported. No page here says how a SYMFONISK speaker appears on a Matter platform through DIRIGERA or which Matter device type it uses.
Can Matter play music on my speakers?
The Matter SDK lists Streaming Audio Player 0x0020 and Casting Audio Player 0x0021 device types. No page here says a platform or shipping speaker supports those types, and no page here describes music streaming or multi-room audio over Matter.
Can I use one Matter speaker with more than one platform?
MatterCheck's data shows only Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant support the Speaker type, so multi-platform use depends on those results. For the mechanics of sharing one Matter device across platforms, see how Matter multi-admin sharing works.
