Matter cameras and video doorbells: which smart home platforms support them in 2026?

Matter 1.5, released by the Connectivity Standards Alliance on 2025-11-20, added cameras to the standard, and the CSA's 1.5.1 notes say that covers video doorbells too. As of 2026-10-19, SmartThings is the only one of the five major platforms with Matter camera support. Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa don't list Matter cameras, and Home Assistant's support is still in development — so on those platforms cameras still work through each platform's own camera route.

Which platforms support Matter cameras?

Here's the at-a-glance picture across the five platforms MatterCheck tracks.

None of the Apple, Google or Amazon pages we checked gives a date for Matter camera support. SmartThings' pages don't publish a list of every Matter camera model it supports; its blog names Aqara, Eve and Xthings as launch partners, and a SmartThings staff member named the Aqara G350 on 2026-04-28.

What Matter 1.5 and 1.5.1 added for cameras and doorbells

The CSA's Matter 1.5 announcement says developers can now build and certify cameras that interoperate directly with Matter-enabled ecosystems without custom APIs or integrations. Matter cameras support live video and audio streaming using WebRTC, enabling two-way communication and both local and remote access via standard STUN and TURN protocols. The spec also defines multi-stream configurations, pan-tilt-zoom controls, detection and privacy zones, and flexible storage options including continuous or event-based recording to local or cloud destinations. The CSA adds that this doesn't stop camera makers from offering their own apps and services.

Matter 1.5 also introduced a revamped, unified approach to closures, covering window shades, drapes, awnings, gates and garage doors. The Matter 1.5.1 release (2026-03-31) added multi-stream video and audio delivery, plus refinements to doorbell, chime and intercom device types — including the ability for controllers to request a specific chime sound rather than only triggering the default. Samsung's newsroom says Matter 1.5 covers indoor and outdoor security cameras and video doorbells.

SmartThings: the one platform with Matter camera support

The SmartThings Blog announced on 2025-12-18 that SmartThings is the first global smart home platform to support Matter-compatible cameras as a fully supported device category, with Aqara, Eve and Xthings as launch partners. At launch, SmartThings listed live streaming, clip storage, two-way talk, motion detection, advanced camera settings, event history, and motion and privacy zones. Those features were available through the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2, Aeotec Smart Home Hub, SmartThings Hub 2018 and ThingsOne Smart Home Hub, with the SmartThings Hub 2015 to follow in 2026.

The Hub 2015 firmware 0.59.9 release notes (rollout from 2026-01-12) added Matter camera support with live streaming, snapshot and video clip recording, zone management, live talkback and pan-tilt-zoom, requiring SmartThings app version 1.8.41.x on Android or 1.7.41.x on iOS. The 0.60.12 release notes (rollout from 2026-03-25) added support for bridged cameras — live view and clip recording for non-Matter cameras connected through a Matter bridge — plus local rule execution for cameras with motion zones and clip recordings, and combined video and audio recording on supported cameras.

The Q1 2026 SmartThings Innovation Report says the whole hub line — including SmartThings Station and integrated hubs in Samsung TVs and appliances — is on Matter 1.5, with Matter 1.5.1 camera support. A SmartThings staff member said on 2026-04-28 that recordings are saved in the SmartThings Cloud, and named the Aqara G350 as on the market. For cameras behind a Matter bridge, see our Matter bridges guide; for which hub each platform needs, see Matter hubs and Thread border routers.

What one owner found with the Aqara G350

A SmartThings Community member's test from 2026-08-27 found the G350's early firmware disappointing — streaming initially didn't work properly and large parts of the camera weren't exposed over Matter. After updating to firmware 4.5.70, which reports Matter 1.5.1, WebRTC live view, two-way audio, snapshot, Matter privacy modes and mechanical pan, tilt, zoom and presets all worked. Zone management, standard AV/AI analysis, local storage and the dual-lens model still weren't exposed over Matter. The lesson: camera firmware matters as much as the platform.

Apple Home: HomeKit Secure Video, not Matter

Apple's Matter page lists the Matter accessory types the Home app supports — air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, outlets, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, and sensors. Cameras and doorbells aren't among them. Apple's camera setup page talks about Apple Home-compatible cameras and HomeKit Secure Video cameras instead. HomeKit Secure Video encrypts video on your home hub, and iCloud+ plans support one camera on 50 GB, up to five on 200 GB, and unlimited on 2 TB and up. Video doesn't count against your iCloud storage, and you can view the last 10 days of activity.

iOS 27 release notes (2026-09-29) add HomeKit Secure Video features — video descriptions, camera clip search and summarized activity notifications — but say nothing about Matter cameras. Aqara says the G350 works with HomeKit Secure Video, limited to 1080p in Apple Home, and needs iCloud+ and an Apple home hub for HomeKit Secure Video.

Google Home: no Matter camera type listed

Google's Matter supported-device-types table (last updated 2026-10-08) has no camera row, and the page says device types not listed aren't officially supported in the Google Home ecosystem. It does list a Matter Doorbell device type (Switch cluster, Matter 1.3) with Google Home app support, but not Google Assistant or Smart Display support. Google's camera device guide and doorbell device guide describe Google's own Camera and Doorbell device types with restricted traits that aren't available for general use, and the Automation API doesn't support those traits. Google also notes a Walmart onn wired camera commissioned through the Android Home APIs SDK can't livestream in the Google Home app. Google's pages don't describe these as Matter 1.5 cameras or say that other makers' Matter cameras can be added to Google Home.

Alexa: cameras through skills, not Matter

Amazon's Matter categories page lists hubs, lighting and smart plugs, generic buttons, sensors, closures, thermostats, fans, air purifiers, appliances and robot vacuums — no cameras or doorbells. Amazon's camera page tells camera makers to use the Smart Home Skill API to connect cloud-enabled cameras for live view on Echo Show, Echo Spot and Fire TV, with two-way communication. That's a cloud skill route, not Matter.

Home Assistant: Matter camera support in development

The Home Assistant blog from 2026-06-23 says the Matter server moved to the Matter 1.5.1 spec, making it better equipped for cameras, doorbells and closures. The Open Home Foundation roadmap item (opened 2026-04-28, status Building) aims for a first Matter camera experience in the existing camera UI. In scope: setup, live streaming, screen capturing, panning and automations. Not in scope: full PTZ, two-way audio, recording and AI detection. The roadmap says live streaming already works in the Matter server and the Home Assistant integration in testing, mainly with the Aqara G350; the risk it names is the limited set of reference cameras.

The draft pull request (opened 2026-07-09, still a draft on 2026-10-19) lists limitations: still images are a static placeholder, and the deferred-offer flow used by battery-powered cameras isn't supported. Aqara says that for Home Assistant the G350 only streams, via RTSP. No release date is given.

Matter doorbells without a camera

Matter also has a plain Doorbell device type. It's listed, with Matter spec 1.3, in Google's supported-device-types table — it uses the Switch cluster, with Google Home app support but not Google Assistant or Smart Display. The CSA's 1.5.1 notes refine doorbell and chime device types, letting controllers request a specific chime sound — for example, different chimes per doorbell. None of the other four platforms' pages we checked lists a plain doorbell type.

A practical route today: a Matter button (generic switch) or a Matter motion sensor can start an automation on all five platforms.

Before you buy a "Matter camera"

  1. Check your platform supports Matter cameras yet. As of 2026-10-19, only SmartThings does. Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa don't list Matter cameras, and Home Assistant's support is still in development.
  2. Check which features your platform exposes. Aqara says Matter camera support and the specific features exposed depend on each Matter-enabled ecosystem, and recording availability depends on the platform and potential subscription.
  3. Check you have the right hub. SmartThings lists specific hubs for Matter camera support — the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2, Aeotec Smart Home Hub, SmartThings Hub 2018, ThingsOne Smart Home Hub, and later the Hub 2015, SmartThings Station and hubs in Samsung TVs and appliances.
  4. Check how the camera reaches your other platforms today. Aqara says the G350 works with HomeKit Secure Video for Apple Home and RTSP for Home Assistant; Aqara's G400 doorbell announcement lists Apple Home with HomeKit Secure Video, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings without calling that Matter.
  5. Check where recordings are stored. A SmartThings staff member said Matter camera recordings are saved in the SmartThings Cloud.
  6. Keep camera firmware up to date. In the SmartThings Community member's G350 test, streaming had initially failed and firmware 4.5.70 exposed far more of the camera over Matter than the earlier firmware.

How we checked

Platform, standards-body and maker pages were fetched 2026-10-19: the CSA releases of 2025-11-20 and 2026-03-31, the SmartThings blog of 2025-12-18 and hub release notes, Apple's Matter page published 2026-05-07, Google's Matter table last updated 2026-10-08, and the Home Assistant blog of 2026-06-23 plus its open roadmap and draft code. Maker pages are the maker's own claims, and the owner test is one person's setup. Cameras aren't a MatterCheck matrix device type yet, so there are no confidence ratings for cameras — the button and motion-sensor table comes from MatterCheck's dated, sourced checks. See our methodology.
