Which smart home platforms support Matter fans and air purifiers?
All five platforms MatterCheck tracks — Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant — can pair a Matter fan or air purifier, control it in the app and switch it from an automation. Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant also let the fan's own state start an automation. Google Home and Home Assistant are rated High; SmartThings is rated Med because no test or SmartThings page yet shows a fan or purifier chosen as a routine starter. On Apple Home and Alexa that trigger is still Unknown, so both are rated Med.
Matter fan and air purifier support at a glance
In this guide, "Control" means on/off plus speed or mode controls in the platform's app. "Starts an automation" means the fan or purifier itself — turning on or off, or changing speed — starting an automation, not its built-in air quality sensor. "Automation action" means an automation can switch or adjust it. Matter has separate Fan and Air Purifier device types, and MatterCheck tracks them as one row because purifiers use the same fan controls. High confidence needs an official statement plus a dated hands-on test of the device type on that platform; a field we can't confirm stays Unknown, and a row with an Unknown field can't be High.
| Platform | Pairs | Control | Starts an automation | Automation action | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Yes | Yes | Unknown | Yes | Med |
| Google Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | Yes | Unknown | Yes | Med |
| SmartThings | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Med |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
Matter fans and air purifiers on Apple Home (HomeKit)
Apple Home pairs and controls Matter fans and air purifiers from iOS/iPadOS 18, and can use them as automation actions. Apple's Works with Apple Home developer page names fans and air purifiers among the Matter categories currently supported by Apple Home. But Apple's Matter accessory list, published 2026-05-07, still omits fans and purifiers — the same list also omits leak sensors, smoke/CO alarms and robot vacuums that work.
The hands-on evidence is dated: Matter Alpha reported on 2024-09-21 that iOS 18 re-added a WELOV P200 Pro as an air purifier with controls and Siri — on iOS 17 it paired but had no controls. 9to5Mac's 2024-09-20 report describes Siri plus scene and automation settings. A HomeKits.de test from 2026-07-29 showed the SwitchBot Battery Circulator Fan 2 Pro with 1–100% speed and oscillation in Apple Home. A 2025-05-30 9to5Mac review used a SwitchBot purifier over native Matter as an automation action, and Mark's Tech Blogs (2026-09-09) had a presence sensor switch the Fan 2 Pro on.
Why the trigger is Unknown: Apple's automation help offers "An Accessory is Controlled" generically, but no test shows a Matter fan or purifier chosen as the accessory that starts an automation. There's also a caveat: hub-bridged fans can be on/off only — HomeKit News found this on 2026-06-08 with a SwitchBot Standing Circulator Fan through a SwitchBot hub. SwitchBot's own help has a "Cannot Be Selected in Automation Settings" page for the Fan 2 Pro (see troubleshooting below). MatterCheck rates Apple Home Med because the trigger is Unknown and Apple's own Matter list omits the type. An Apple Home hub (HomePod or Apple TV, updated to 18 or later) is recommended, and it's required for remote access and automations. Wi-Fi Matter fans and purifiers don't need a Thread border router.
Matter fans and air purifiers on Google Home
Google Home pairs, controls and automates Matter fans and air purifiers, and their state can start automations. Google's Matter supported-devices list has Fan and Air Purifier rows, and Google maps the Fan Control cluster to its fan-speed control. Google's release notes say Matter air purifiers were added 2025-07-23 and a fan and purifier quick-settings panel arrived 2026-10-14.
The dated hands-on evidence is a Tweakers review from 2025-03-03 (updated 2025-05-07; sponsored unit, the reviewer says it wasn't moderated) that added the SwitchBot Air Purifier Table to Google Home over Matter. The speed slider snapped to 5/50/100% and the unit was offline for the first hours. Google's consumer automation help lists device on/off starters, and in the Google Home app's automation editor, fan starters and actions are on/off only — fan speed isn't a starter there. MatterCheck rates Google Home High on Google's own device list plus this dated test. A Google/Nest Matter hub is required.
Matter fans and air purifiers on Alexa
Alexa pairs and controls Matter fans and air purifiers, and can switch them from a routine. Amazon's Matter categories page maps fans to its Range, Mode and Toggle controllers — speed, mode and on/off — and adds sensor interfaces for purifiers. But the page has no routine-starter column, and Amazon's What's New page for developers shows no routine-starter change. So whether a Matter fan or purifier's state can start an Alexa routine is Unknown.
The evidence is action-only. The Verge reported on 2025-09-29 that Alexa+ added a new air purifier to a routine as an action — the connection wasn't stated — and found timed bathroom-fan control unreliable. Les Alexiens tested the SwitchBot Air Purifier Table on 2025-02-10 through SwitchBot's Alexa skill and hub, not Matter. A PCMag review from 2026-04-02 didn't test Alexa routines. One aggregator also lists Alexa as control only for this capability. MatterCheck rates Alexa Med because the trigger is Unknown. A Matter-enabled Echo or eero hub is required.
Matter fans and air purifiers on SmartThings
SmartThings pairs, controls and automates Matter fans and air purifiers, and their state can start automations. Air Purifier is on the SmartThings Matter partners page. The dated hands-on evidence is a SmartThings Community thread from 2025-03-12 to 2025-12-21: owners ran a SwitchBot Air Purifier over native Matter, and after SwitchBot firmware 2.5 (2025-11-09) fan mode and fan speed worked, with routines offering fan mode and fan speed as actions (2025-12-21). There was an early status-update issue. MatterCheck rates SmartThings Med: the starter rests on SmartThings' general routines help, and no owner or review has shown a fan or purifier's state picked as a routine's If condition. A SmartThings-compatible hub is required.
Matter fans and air purifiers in Home Assistant
Home Assistant pairs, controls and automates Matter fans and air purifiers, and their state can start automations. The Matter integration creates fan entities — fan is among its entity categories. SwitchBot's Air Purifier and Air Purifier Table are Works with Home Assistant certified as standalone Matter-over-Wi-Fi devices (2025-06-26; in-house tested certification, official not independent), listed on HA's SwitchBot Matter page.
Owners report on 2026-08-12 and 2026-09-04 that a Govee H1310 ceiling fan with light works in Home Assistant over Matter only, with fan presets, light and dimming. The caveat, stated honestly: some owners reported on 2025-10-14 and 2025-11-06 that SwitchBot Air Purifier Matter pairing fails at device attestation. Home Assistant needs its Matter Server — HA OS is recommended.
Which controls work: on/off, speed, modes and oscillation
Apple Home shows speed 1–100% for fans and purifiers (HomeKits.de's 2025-03-21 test of the SwitchBot Air Purifier Table), and oscillation for the SwitchBot Fan 2 Pro; bridged fans may be on/off only. Google Home maps fan speed — the Tweakers slider snapped to 5/50/100% — but app automations are on/off only. Alexa maps speed, mode and on/off. SmartThings shows fan mode and speed after SwitchBot firmware 2.5, per owners in the SmartThings Community. Home Assistant exposes a fan entity with presets, which Govee H1310 owners use for their ceiling fan. Extras such as DREO's 3D oscillation and MotionSync stay in the maker's app, and our product notes say the SwitchBot fan's battery level may be app-only too.
Can a sensor turn on an air purifier or fan automatically?
Every platform can use a Matter fan or purifier as an automation action, so the deciding factor is the sensor's starter. Motion is a starter everywhere. Temperature and humidity start automations on all five platforms — Alexa is rated Med for that. Air quality starts automations on Apple Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant, only partly on Google Home (Partial; the air quality guide explains the limit), and is Unknown on Alexa. See our air quality sensor guide, temperature and humidity sensor guide and motion sensor guide.
One caveat: the SwitchBot Air Purifier Table's built-in air quality sensor reports only while the purifier runs, so it can't switch the purifier on by itself — HomeKits.de noted this on 2025-03-21 and smarthomeblog.de on 2025-04-13. Use a separate air quality sensor for that. A working example: Mark's Tech Blogs' 2026-09-09 review describes automations that switch the Fan 2 Pro on when a presence sensor sees you and the room is warm.
Thread or Wi-Fi: what you need
Every fan and purifier MatterCheck tracks uses Matter over Wi-Fi, so no Thread border router is needed for them. Each platform still needs its Matter hub or controller: an Apple Home hub for Apple Home (recommended, and required for remote access and automations), a Google/Nest Matter hub for Google Home, a Matter-enabled Echo or eero for Alexa, a SmartThings-compatible hub for SmartThings, and the Home Assistant Matter Server for Home Assistant. The SwitchBot Air Purifier can join directly over Matter (firmware V2.2 or later) or be bridged through a SwitchBot hub, and the two routes expose different controls. See our hubs guide for the full picture.
Matter fans and air purifiers we track
- SwitchBot Air Purifier (Matter) — air purifier, Wi-Fi. Direct Matter from firmware V2.2 or bridged through a hub; the two paths expose different controls. Google shows fan speed in the Home app but not by voice or on a Smart Display. MatterCheck's product notes list Apple Home as on/off only for this model, but a 2025 hands-on of the Table version showed speed control — check yours.
- SwitchBot Battery Circulator Fan 2 Pro — fan, Wi-Fi. Maker says it works over Matter with all five platforms. Battery level may be app-only.
- DREO TurboPoly Fan 765S (Matter) — fan, Wi-Fi, Matter 1.4.2. Power, speed, oscillation and modes over Matter; 3D oscillation and MotionSync are DREO-app only.
- GoveeLife Smart Air Purifier 2 Pro with Dust Sensor (H7129) — air purifier, Wi-Fi, Matter 1.2. The built-in dust/PM2.5 sensor drives Auto mode in the Govee app, but the Matter certificate is air purifier only, so don't expect a Matter air quality reading.
- GoveeLife Smart Air Purifier 2 (With PM2.5 Sensor, H7124) — air purifier, Wi-Fi, Matter 1.2. Same caveat: the certificate is air purifier only, so the built-in sensor isn't a Matter air quality endpoint.
We don't rank products: this is the list we track, with what's verified for each. For live per-product notes, see the fan and air purifier page.
Troubleshooting Matter fans and air purifiers
- Update to iOS/iPadOS 18 and an updated home hub. On iOS 17, the WELOV P200 Pro paired but had no controls.
- If a fan is bridged through a maker hub and shows on/off only, pair it directly over Matter instead where the maker supports it (HomeKit News saw on/off only with a hub-bridged SwitchBot fan); the SwitchBot Air Purifier needs firmware V2.2 or later for direct Matter.
- If a SwitchBot fan can't be selected in Apple Home automations, see SwitchBot's help page.
- If a SwitchBot Air Purifier fails to pair with Home Assistant at device attestation, you're not alone: it's an owner-reported issue — see the HA Community thread.
- On SmartThings, fan mode and speed only worked after SwitchBot firmware 2.5.
- On Google Home, a new purifier was offline for the first hours in Tweakers' test, and the speed slider snaps to set steps.
Which platform is best for a Matter fan or air purifier?
All five platforms control and automate them. If you want the fan itself to start other automations, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant are the documented choices. Home Assistant has certified SwitchBot purifiers, but watch the pairing reports. Apple Home handles fans and purifiers as automation actions from iOS 18 (9to5Mac's 2025-05-30 review did exactly that) even though Apple's list omits the type. Alexa controls them but has no documented starter. Matter lets one purifier join more than one platform — see our multi-admin guide — and our platform comparison puts the whole matrix side by side.
Frequently asked questions
Do Matter air purifiers need a hub?
They need a platform Matter hub or controller — an Apple Home hub (recommended, and required for automations), Google/Nest Matter hub, Matter-enabled Echo or eero, SmartThings hub, or Home Assistant Matter Server. But every fan and purifier MatterCheck tracks is Matter over Wi-Fi, so no Thread border router is needed.
Do Matter air purifiers work with Apple Home?
Yes, from iOS/iPadOS 18. Dated hands-on tests show controls, Siri and use as an automation action. MatterCheck rates Apple Home Med rather than High because no test yet shows a fan or purifier starting an automation, and Apple's own Matter accessory list still omits the type.
Can Alexa use a Matter fan as a routine trigger?
MatterCheck hasn't found a dated test or official statement showing a Matter fan or purifier starting an Alexa routine. Alexa can control them and switch them from a routine, but the trigger stays Unknown.
Does a Matter air purifier show air quality?
Only via a Matter air quality endpoint. The Govee certificates are air purifier only, so their built-in sensors don't expose Matter air quality readings. The SwitchBot Table's sensor reports only while the purifier runs. See our air quality sensor guide.
Is there a Matter ceiling fan?
Owners run the Govee H1310 ceiling fan with light in Home Assistant over Matter, with fan presets and light controls. MatterCheck doesn't track ceiling fans as products yet.

How we checked
Values come from MatterCheck matrix v1.15; the fan and air purifier values were last checked 2026-10-19. High needs an official statement covering the feature plus a dated hands-on test of the device type on that platform. A field we can't confirm stays Unknown, and a row with an Unknown field can't be High. See our methodology, the fan and air purifier page and the hubs guide.
