Govee and Matter: which Govee lights work with Matter, what you can control, and how to set them up
Many newer Govee lights carry Matter over Wi-Fi, not Thread, while older models stay on the Govee Home app because of a hardware limitation. Matter gives you basic control — on/off, brightness, colour temperature, and colour — while scenes and effects stay in Govee's app. You need a Matter controller for whichever platform you want to use.
Govee's Matter FAQ still lists only the M1 strip and early-Matter hub versions, while newer product pages and CSA listings show many more Matter models. Check the product page or box for Matter, and verify against the CSA's certified product list before assuming a Govee light has Matter.
Which Govee lights work with Matter
Govee's Matter FAQ says the company's "Current Matter Support Plan" includes the M1 Strip Light in 2m form, plus the 5m version if it has a Matter-enabled control box. The FAQ also says previous Govee products will not support Matter "because of hardware limitation," and that those older products can still be used through the Govee Home App. The Verge's 2023 review of the M1 strip described it as the first Matter-compatible product from Govee and, at the time, the only Govee product that supported Matter.
Newer Govee product pages list Matter on several current models. The A19 Smart LED Light Bulbs page shows model H6006 as "Matter Compatible" and lists Matter under control methods. The A21 Smart LED Light Bulb page lists Matter as a control method for model H1401. The COB Strip Light Pro page says models H61E5 and H61E6 are "compatible with Matter." The Ceiling Light Ultra page describes model H1270 as "Matter-certified." The Strip Light 2 Pro (H61F5) manual includes a Matter Guide for that model.
The CSA's certified product listings show more Govee Matter devices. The Govee Pendant Light listing and the Govee Ball Lights listing both show Wi-Fi and Bluetooth transport with Matter specification version 1.3. Those pages also list other Govee Matter-certified products under "More by Guangdong Qianyan Technology Co., Ltd.," including an LED Strip Light, Neon Lights for skirting, Smart Bulbs, Floor Lamps, a Table Lamp, and a TV Backlight. MatterCheck tracks 8 Govee products out of 391 total products: the GoveeLife Smart Air Purifier 2 Pro (H7129), Strip Light 2 Pro 6.56 ft (H61F2), GoveeLife Smart Air Purifier 2 (H7124), Ceiling Fan With Lights (H1310), Edison Bulb (R14C2), Monitor Light Bar (H2800), Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro (R3A51), and Smart Bulb (H14B1). To check whether a specific Govee product has Matter, look for Matter on the box or product page, or check the CSA certification guide. You can also browse MatterCheck's product list.
Wi-Fi, not Thread: do you need a hub?
Govee's Matter FAQ answers the question "What technology is Govee's Matter based on, Thread or Wi-FI?" with "Wi-Fi." The CSA's Pendant Light and Ball Lights listings both list the transport interface as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. All 8 Govee products MatterCheck tracks use Wi-Fi transport. That means Govee Matter devices do not need a Thread border router. If you already have a Thread network for other devices, Govee lights won't join it — they connect directly to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network.
You do still need a Matter controller, which Govee's FAQ calls "a Matter hub." The FAQ says a Matter hub or controller "is required for providing an ecosystem that can be paired with Matter-certified devices." The Verge's 2023 review puts it plainly: "you need one Matter controller per platform." What counts as a controller varies by platform. Govee's Matter FAQ lists hubs for each platform — HomePod and Apple TV 4K models for Apple, Nest hubs and speakers for Google, Echo devices for Amazon, and the SmartThings Station, SmartThings 2018 Hub and Aeotec Smart Home Hub for Samsung — but that list dates from early Matter. Apple's Matter page names Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation) and HomePod mini as Thread-enabled home hubs; Google's Matter page lists Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro and Google TV Streamer; Amazon's Matter page says to install the device within 30 ft (9 m) of a compatible Alexa hub or device; and SmartThings' Matter page describes the Matter controller and commissioner roles. Govee's A19 bulb page says "No hub needed" in its FAQ, but that answer is about connecting the bulb to the Govee app over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth — for Matter, Govee's own Matter FAQ says a hub or controller is required.
Govee's FAQ also says you need a phone or tablet connected to your 2.4GHz network, and that an IPv6 network is required. Google's Matter page warns that without IPv6, setup may appear to succeed but control can fail later. For more on the difference between the two transports, see the Thread vs Wi-Fi guide. For what counts as a hub on each platform, see the hubs and Thread border routers guide. For network setup, see the IPv6 and VLAN guide.
What you can control over Matter, and what stays in the Govee app
Govee's Matter FAQ says currently supported features include "switching on/off, brightness adjustment, color temperature adjustment, and color changing," with "More features TBD." That matches what the reviews found. The Verge's 2023 review of the M1 strip says dynamic lighting features don't work in Matter, and that the Matter specification is "limited to on / off, brightness, and single-color lighting." Matter Alpha's review of the Christmas String Lights 2 says Matter gives "on/off, brightness, and single color selection" under the extended color light device type, with no scenes, gradients, or shape mapping. It also notes that changing the colour through Matter overrides the selected scene, so you have to reopen the Govee app to get the scene back.
AppleInsider's review of the Ceiling Light Ultra (H1270) found that the light shows up in Apple Home as a single addressable light — the top and bottom lights aren't split into separate units, and Govee doesn't expose its scenes to Apple Home. The reviewer used Shortcuts donated by the Govee app to automate some of the light's specific functions, but those automations live in Shortcuts, not the Home app. For the Ceiling Light Ultra, that means Apple Home treats the whole fixture as one light. The Verge's review describes the M1's segments, preset scenes and DreamView music sync as features of the Govee app, not of Matter apps. For more on what Matter light bulbs support, see the Matter light bulb guide.
How to add a Govee light to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant
Govee's Matter FAQ and the H61F5 manual describe the same general steps for first-time Matter setup:
- Make sure you have a Matter-certified Govee product, a Matter controller for your platform, a phone on your 2.4GHz network, and IPv6 enabled.
- Find the Matter QR code or Matter device number on the product or on the "Device Settings" page in the Govee Home App.
- Turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone.
- Open an app that supports Matter — Govee names Google Home and Apple Home as examples; Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant also add Matter devices, as the sections below show.
- Scan the QR code or enter the device number in that app.
- Complete the Matter network connection within 15 minutes after the product is powered on when using Matter for the first time.
If you lose the code, see the lost setup code guide. For the full general walkthrough, see how to add a Matter device.
Apple Home
Apple's Matter page says you can add Matter accessories in the Home app by tapping Add, then Add Accessory, then scanning the code or holding your iPhone near the accessory. With iOS 18 or later you can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub, though Apple recommends setting one up. The Verge's 2023 review paired the M1 strip with Apple Home using a HomePod Mini as the Matter controller and says it "paired right away." See the Apple Home Matter guide.
Google Home
Google's Matter page says you need a Matter-enabled hub device set up on your home network before adding Matter devices to Google Home. Supported hubs include the Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer. Google also stresses that IPv6 must be enabled on your network. See the Google Home Matter guide.
Alexa
Amazon's Matter page says to open the Alexa app, go to Devices, tap the plus, select Add Device, choose the Matter icon, confirm you have a Matter device, then scan the QR code or enter the pairing code. Amazon recommends installing your Matter device within 30 ft (9 m) of a compatible Alexa hub. See the Alexa Matter guide.
SmartThings
SmartThings' Matter page says you need a Matter controller and a commissioner — your phone running the SmartThings app acts as the commissioner. Open the SmartThings app, tap Add (+), choose Add Device, scan the QR code or enter the setup code, select the hub and room, and follow the prompts. See the SmartThings Matter guide.
Home Assistant
Home Assistant's Matter docs say to install the Matter integration, then use the Home Assistant Companion app on your phone to commission the device. Go to Settings > Connectivity > Matter in the Companion app, select Add device, choose "No. It's new," and scan the QR code or enter the commission code manually. Bluetooth is used during commissioning only; after that the device communicates over Wi-Fi. See the Home Assistant Matter guide.
Using the Govee Home app and several Matter apps together
Govee's Matter FAQ says you can use the Govee Home App after connecting to Matter. Put your phone and the Matter-certified device on the same LAN, tap "+" on the Govee Home App home page, enter the product model number, and follow the instructions. The FAQ has two important cautions: if you want to use both Matter and the Govee Home App, you must let the device connect to Matter first, and if you use the Govee Home App to switch networks, the Matter function will be disabled — you'll need to reset the device and re-connect it in the Matter ecosystem. The H61F5 manual says "Changing the network may cause Matter to malfunction." The Verge's 2023 review reported that after adding the M1 strip to the Govee app, the strip became unresponsive in Apple Home and Alexa — one reviewer's experience with that early Matter product.
To share a Govee light with a second platform, Govee's FAQ says the setup code that came with the product cannot be used for a second commissioning. Instead, open the app of the originally paired controller, go to the device's settings, find or create an 11-digit setup code, copy it, and enter it in the second controller's app. Google Home also supports generating dynamic QR codes — keep the pairing page open while scanning. The Verge's 2023 review describes doing this from Apple Home to add the M1 strip to Alexa and SmartThings. For more, see the multi-admin guide.
Govee and Home Assistant: Matter or the local integration
Home Assistant has two separate routes for Govee lights. The first is Home Assistant's Matter integration, which commissions the device over Matter like any other Matter controller. Home Assistant's Matter docs describe using the Companion app to scan the QR code and add the device to Home Assistant's Matter fabric. The second is Home Assistant's Govee lights local integration, which uses Local API control and is not Matter. Home Assistant's Govee lights local docs say the integration was introduced in Home Assistant 2024.2, has an IoT class of Local Push, and is set up via Settings > Devices & services > Add Integration > Govee lights local. You must enable local control on the Govee device first, following Govee's instructions.
The local integration's supported-devices list includes many Govee model numbers. Of the Govee products MatterCheck tracks, H61F2 (Strip Light 2 Pro) and H1310 (Ceiling Fan With Lights) appear in that list; H7129, H7124, R14C2, H2800, R3A51, and H14B1 do not. The docs note that "Some scenes may not be supported from all devices." For more on Matter in Home Assistant, see the Home Assistant Matter guide. For what local control means, see the local control guide.
What MatterCheck's data says for Govee's device types
| Matter device type | Apple Home | Google Home | Alexa | SmartThings | Home Assistant | Homey | Hubitat |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Matter colour light (5 Govee products tracked) | Yes / Yes (High) | Yes / Yes (High) | Yes / Partial (Med) | Yes / Yes (High) | Yes / Yes (High) | Yes / Yes (Med) | Unknown / Unknown (Med) |
| Matter fan / air purifier (3 Govee products tracked) | Yes / Unknown (Med) | Yes / Yes (High) | Yes / Unknown (Med) | Yes / Yes (Med) | Yes / Yes (High) | Yes / Yes (Med) | Unknown / Unknown (Med) |
Each entry: pairs / usable as an automation trigger (confidence), per Matter device type in MatterCheck's data — not a test of Govee products.
MatterCheck checks 27 Matter device types on 7 platforms and tracks 8 Govee products, 5 of them colour lights and 3 fans or air purifiers. These results are per Matter device type, not tests of the Govee products themselves, and the confidence label shows how sure MatterCheck is about each result. For colour lights, every platform except Hubitat shows Yes for pairing; for automation triggers, Alexa shows Partial, Hubitat shows Unknown. For fans and air purifiers, Apple Home shows Unknown, Alexa shows Unknown, Hubitat shows Unknown for automation triggers. See the MatterCheck platform matrix, the platform comparison and the fan and air purifier guide for the detail.
When a Govee light won't pair or stops responding
- Make sure your phone is on the 2.4GHz network. Govee's FAQ asks for a phone on your 2.4GHz network, and the H61F5 manual says 5GHz is not supported.
- Check that IPv6 is enabled on your network. Govee's FAQ says IPv6 is required, and Google's Matter page warns that missing IPv6 can cause control to fail after setup appears to succeed.
- Turn on Bluetooth on your phone and keep it near the device during pairing. Govee's FAQ and the H61F5 manual both list Bluetooth as a setup requirement.
- Complete Matter setup within 15 minutes after powering on the product for the first time.
- The product's own setup code only works for the first controller. To add a second platform, generate a new 11-digit code from the first controller's app, per Govee's FAQ.
- If you used the Govee Home App to switch networks, Matter will be disabled. Reset the device and re-connect it in the Matter ecosystem, per Govee's FAQ.
- For the H61F5 Strip Light 2 Pro, factory reset by short pressing the middle button on the control box 4 times while pressing and holding the power button. Other Govee models have different reset methods — check the manual for your model.
- Make sure your platform's controller app and hub actually support Matter. Govee's FAQ lists specific hub models for Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung.
For a fuller troubleshooting walkthrough, see the device not pairing guide, the device offline guide, and the remove and factory reset guide.

Which Govee lights are Matter compatible?
Govee's FAQ names the M1 Strip Light (2m, and 5m with a Matter-enabled control box). Product pages list Matter on the A19 H6006, A21 H1401, COB Strip Light Pro H61E5/H61E6, and Ceiling Light Ultra H1270. The H61F5 Strip Light 2 Pro manual includes a Matter Guide. CSA listings show Matter certification for the Pendant Light, Ball Lights, and other Govee products. Check the product page or box for Matter.
Do Govee Matter lights use Thread?
No. Govee's Matter FAQ says Govee's Matter is based on Wi-Fi. The CSA listings for the Pendant Light and Ball Lights show Wi-Fi and Bluetooth transport. All Govee products MatterCheck tracks use Wi-Fi.
Do I need a hub for Govee Matter?
You don't need a Thread border router, but you do need a Matter controller for each platform. Govee's FAQ says a Matter hub or controller is required. The A19 product page's "No hub needed" answer is about the Govee app, not Matter.
Does Govee work with Apple Home or HomeKit?
Yes, for Matter-enabled Govee lights. The Verge's 2023 review paired the M1 strip with Apple Home using a HomePod Mini. AppleInsider's review added the Ceiling Light Ultra to Apple Home, though it appears as a single light. Older Govee products without Matter can't be added to Apple Home through Matter.
Do Govee scenes and effects work over Matter?
No. Govee's FAQ lists on/off, brightness, colour temperature, and colour as the supported Matter features. The Verge and Matter Alpha reviews both say dynamic effects, scenes and gradients stay in the Govee app. Changing colour over Matter overrides the active scene.
Does Govee work with Home Assistant?
Yes, two ways. You can add Matter-enabled Govee lights through Home Assistant's Matter integration, or use the Govee lights local integration, which uses Local API control and is not Matter. The local integration was introduced in Home Assistant 2024.2 and requires enabling local control on the device.
Can older Govee lights get Matter with an update?
No. Govee's Matter FAQ says previous products will not support Matter "because of hardware limitation." Older Govee lights still work with the Govee Home App, and The Verge's 2023 review notes Govee also offers Alexa and Google Home cloud connections that don't use Matter.
