Level Lock and Matter: which locks work, which hub you need, and setup

Level's Matter locks are the Level Lock Pro, Level Lock+ (Matter), Level Lock (Matter) and Level Bolt (Matter), all Matter over Thread plus Bluetooth. You add them from the Level Home app's Works With menu and need a Matter-over-Thread hub controller for each platform. Older non-Matter models such as Level Lock - Touch Edition don't use Matter.

The steps below come from Level's support articles and product pages, and certification facts come from the CSA's certification ledger. Level's hub lists are dated and change, so check your platform's current list before buying or setting up.

Which Level locks work with Matter

Level's ecosystem pairing article names four Matter-enabled locks: Level Lock Pro, Level Lock+ (Matter), Matter-enabled Level Lock, and Level Bolt (Matter). The CSA's certification ledger lists exactly four door-lock models for Level's vendor ID, all with certification records and all using Thread plus Bluetooth as transport. The Matter version on the ledger depends on the certified firmware version: earlier software releases are certified as Matter 1.2, while software 3.5.0 and later records are Matter 1.4.

The ledger records show Level Lock+ (Matter) as part B05, first certified 2024-06-19 under Matter 1.2, with the latest record from 2026-02-04 at software 3.6.2. Level Bolt (Matter) is part B12, first certified 2024-09-17 under Matter 1.2, latest 2026-02-04 at software 3.6.2. Level Lock Pro is part B05, first certified 2025-03-12 under Matter 1.2, latest 2025-12-09 at software 3.6.1. Level Lock (Matter) is part B12, first certified 2025-04-24 under Matter 1.2, latest 2026-02-04 at software 3.6.2. The ledger reuses part numbers B05 and B12 across two models each, so don't read anything into that.

Level's Lock+ (Matter) setup article says some Level locks aren't compatible with Matter — it names Level Lock - Touch Edition as an example — and those keep working as before. The Verge notes that Level's earlier Bluetooth-only locks were limited to Apple Home and Ring out of the box. Level's November 2024 press release announced a free Matter firmware update program for current Level Lock+ owners. The press release doesn't describe the update steps, and the program URL now goes to the Level Lock product page.

MatterCheck tracks 4 Level products out of 392 products across 27 Matter device types and 7 platforms. See the MatterCheck SKU list for tracked models, or how to check CSA certification yourself.

Thread and which hub you need

Every Matter Level lock is Matter-over-Thread plus Bluetooth. The CSA's certification ledger lists transport as thread, bluetooth for all four models, and the Level Lock Pro page lists Bluetooth 4.0, Bluetooth 5.0 and Matter-over-Thread. There is no Matter-over-Wi-Fi Level lock. Level's November 2024 press release calls Level Lock+ (Matter) the first smart lock to concurrently support Bluetooth and Matter-over-Thread — that's Level's own claim.

Level's Matter hubs article says you need a Matter-over-Thread hub controller connected to your home Wi-Fi network. Its lists are dated: as of May 2025, Apple-compatible hubs include Apple TV 4K (2nd gen), Apple TV 4K (3rd gen) WiFi + Ethernet, HomePod (2nd gen) and HomePod mini. As of April 2025, SmartThings-compatible hubs include SmartThings Hub V3, SmartThings Station, Aeotec Smart Home Hub and Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2, plus select Samsung TVs and appliances. As of July 2025, Alexa-compatible hubs include Echo (4th Gen), Echo Hub, Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen), eero 6/6+, eero Max 7 and others in the list. As of July 2025, Google-compatible hubs include Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro (Wi-Fi 6E) and Google TV Streamer (4K). Level says these lists change quickly and to check each platform's latest guidance.

There's one exception: Level's Matter hubs article says certain Thread-enabled iPhones — iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max and iPhone 16 and newer on iOS 18 or later — don't need a separate hub, but that Thread point-to-point connectivity only allows home keys. Remote access, Automations and most Siri functionality still need a Matter-over-Thread hub controller. The Level Lock Pro page adds that other HomePod or Apple TV models additionally require a compatible Thread Border Router. Level's Matter lock guide explains the platform needs both a Matter hub controller and Thread Border Router functionality; a growing number of devices do both out of the box, and some may need a firmware update.

Apple's Matter page says Thread-based accessories require a Thread-enabled home hub such as Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, or a compatible third-party Thread border router, though Thread-enabled iPhones running iOS 18 can locally pair and manage Thread accessories. Google's Matter page says Thread devices need a hub that also works as a Thread border router, and that IPv6 must be enabled on your home network. Amazon's Matter page says to confirm you have a Thread-enabled device online before connecting Thread-based Matter devices. SmartThings' Matter page says connecting Thread devices requires a Matter controller that includes a Thread Border Router. For more on the tradeoffs, see Thread vs Wi-Fi for Matter and Matter hubs and Thread border routers.

How to add a Level lock to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant

The general flow is the same across platforms: add the lock to the Level Home app first, then share it to your ecosystem app using the Matter setup code. Level's Lock+ (Matter) setup article says adding to the Level Home app first gives you access to Key Cards & Fobs, Level Keypad codes, guest passes, lock volume and firmware updates. For the platform-specific steps, see how to add a Matter device and, if you've lost the code, how to find a lost Matter setup code.

In the Level Home app

  1. Make sure your phone is on the latest OS, install the Level Home app, and add the lock there first, per Level's Lock+ (Matter) setup article.
  2. On the home screen of the location, tap the disclosure arrow, then tap Devices, then tap the lock you want to configure.
  3. Tap Works With.
  4. For Apple Home, tap Add to Apple Home and follow the onscreen instructions. On iOS 18 or later the Level Home app puts the Matter setup code on the clipboard; on iOS 17.6 or earlier it prompts you to scan the Matter QR code or copy the setup code.
  5. For other ecosystems, tap Other platform, then tap Copy setup code. Open the ecosystem app, follow its instructions to add a device, and paste the code when prompted.

Level's ecosystem pairing article says you have 15 minutes from inserting the battery to add the lock to an ecosystem app. If you run out of time, copy the Matter setup code from the Level Home app using the steps above.

Apple Home

Level's Lock+ (Matter) setup article says Apple Home setup starts from the Level Home app: tap Add to Apple Home under Works With and follow the prompts. Apple's Matter page says to open the Home app, tap Add, tap Add Accessory, and scan the code or hold your device near the accessory; if the accessory was previously paired to another app, tap More options and select it. See Matter support in Apple Home.

Google Home

Level's Lock+ (Matter) setup article says SmartThings, Alexa and Google Home setup starts from the ecosystem app rather than the Level Home app. Copy the setup code from Works With > Other platform first, then open Google Home and add a device. Google's Matter page says you need a Matter-enabled hub set up on your home network, and IPv6 must be enabled. See Matter support in Google Home.

Alexa

Copy the setup code from the Level Home app, then open the Alexa app. Amazon's Matter page says to open Devices, select the plus, select Add Device, tap the Matter icon, confirm you have a Matter device, and scan the QR code or enter the pairing code. It also says to install the device within 30 ft (9 m) of a compatible Alexa hub. See Matter support in Alexa.

SmartThings

Copy the setup code from the Level Home app, then open SmartThings. SmartThings' Matter page says to select Add (+), choose Add Device, scan the QR code or enter the setup code, select the hub and room, and wait for the connection. Your phone acts as the Matter commissioner, and the hub is the Matter controller. See Matter support in SmartThings.

Home Assistant

Level doesn't document Home Assistant steps in the fetched articles, so use Home Assistant's Matter docs. Home Assistant's Matter docs say to install the Matter integration, then use the Home Assistant Companion app: go to Settings > Connectivity > Matter, select Add device, choose "No. It's new," and scan the QR code or enter the commission code. For Thread devices you need a Thread border router such as HomePod Mini, Apple TV 4K, Nest Hub (2nd Gen), Nest Wifi Pro, or Home Assistant with the OpenThread Border Router app. See Matter support in Home Assistant.

Using a Level lock in several Matter apps

Level's Lock+ (Matter) explainer and Level's Bolt (Matter) explainer both say you can connect those locks with up to three smart home ecosystems simultaneously. Level's pages fetched here don't give a number of ecosystems for the Level Lock Pro or Level Lock (Matter).

To add a second or third ecosystem, Level's ecosystem pairing article says to go back to Works With in the Level Home app, tap Add smart home platform, read the instructions, tap Copy setup code, then open the additional ecosystem app and paste the code when prompted. You'll need another Matter-over-Thread hub controller for that ecosystem.

Home Assistant's Matter docs describe Multi Fabric: the same device can join multiple controllers, and the standard describes that each device should be able to at least support 5 different fabrics simultaneously. One Google-specific gotcha: Level's duplicate locks article says if you paired the lock with Matter before unpairing it using the original protocol (e.g., Wi-Fi), you may see the same lock twice in Google Home. See sharing a Matter device across apps.

What works over Matter, Apple home keys and Level Connect

Remote lock and unlock through a Matter platform needs a Matter-over-Thread hub. The Level Lock page and Level Bolt page both list remote access requirements as a Matter-over-Thread hub controller updated to the platform's latest firmware, and the Level Lock page notes automations — "Create scenes lock/unlock based on time or activity (through supported Matter platform)" — also require a Matter-over-Thread hub.

Apple home keys work on Level Lock Pro, Level Lock+ (Matter) and Level Lock+, per Level's home keys article. You add the home key in Apple Wallet through the Apple Home app, then choose Tap to Unlock or Require Face ID or Passcode. Level's Matter troubleshooting guide says Level Bolt and Level Lock are not compatible with Apple home key. The Level Lock Pro page says home keys require iPhone XS or later with iOS 17.1 or later, and Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 10.1 or later.

Level Connect is a Wi-Fi bridge, not a Matter hub or Thread border router. The Level Lock and Level Bolt pages say Level Connect adds real-time features like setting access codes, adding key cards, and seeing who's come and gone from anywhere. The Verge's August 2025 hands-on with the Level Lock Pro observed that door sense showed only basic locked/unlocked alerts in Apple Home with no open/close status, while Google Home showed the door status; it also noted that Level Connect's alerts for who locked or unlocked and battery life are "not all of which are available yet in Matter." Those are one reviewer's observations from August 2025. For what Matter locks expose in general, see Matter smart lock support and Matter vs HomeKit.

These results are per Matter device type, not tests of Level products, and the confidence label shows how sure MatterCheck is about each result. Level locks certify as Matter door locks. Door locks pair on all seven platforms and work as automation triggers on all of them; Google Home control and the Google Home and Alexa lock actions are Partial, and Alexa, Homey and Hubitat are Medium confidence. See the door lock and platform comparison pages for the sources.

When a Level lock won't pair or stops responding

As a last resort, Level's Matter troubleshooting guide says to reset the lock to factory settings — no need to disassemble it — but the fetched articles don't include the reset steps, so see MatterCheck's reset guide below and contact Level support. For general fixes, see Matter device not pairing, Matter device offline or not responding, removing and factory-resetting a Matter device, and IPv6 and VLAN network setup.

Frequently asked questions

Does Level Lock work with Matter?

Yes, for the Matter-enabled models. Level's ecosystem pairing article names Level Lock Pro, Level Lock+ (Matter), Matter-enabled Level Lock, and Level Bolt (Matter) as Matter-enabled locks. Older models like Level Lock - Touch Edition don't use Matter, per Level's Lock+ (Matter) setup article.

Which Level locks support Matter?

Four models: Level Lock Pro, Level Lock+ (Matter), Level Lock (Matter), and Level Bolt (Matter). The CSA's certification ledger lists all four as door locks with Thread plus Bluetooth transport, first certified between June 2024 and April 2025.

Does Level Lock use Thread or Wi-Fi?

Every Matter Level lock uses Matter-over-Thread plus Bluetooth. The CSA's certification ledger lists transport as thread, bluetooth for all four models. There is no Matter-over-Wi-Fi Level lock.

Do I need a hub for a Level lock with Matter?

Yes. Level's Matter hubs article says you need a Matter-over-Thread hub controller connected to your home Wi-Fi network. Thread-enabled iPhones on iOS 18 or later can pair without a separate hub, but per Level that only allows home keys — remote access, automations and most Siri functionality still need a hub controller.

Where do I find the Level Matter setup code?

In the Level Home app: tap the disclosure arrow on the location home screen, tap Devices, tap the lock, tap Works With, then tap Add smart home platform or Other platform and tap Copy setup code. Level's ecosystem pairing article says you have 15 minutes from inserting the battery to add the lock to an ecosystem app; if you run out of time, you can copy the Matter setup code in the Level Home app this way.

Can I use a Level lock with more than one smart home app?

Yes. Level's Lock+ (Matter) explainer and Level's Bolt (Matter) explainer say those locks can connect with up to three smart home ecosystems simultaneously. Each additional ecosystem needs its own Matter-over-Thread hub controller, per Level's ecosystem pairing article.

Do Level Bolt and Level Lock work with Apple home keys?

No. Level's Matter troubleshooting guide says Level Bolt and Level Lock are not compatible with Apple home key. Home keys work on Level Lock Pro, Level Lock+ (Matter) and Level Lock+, per Level's home keys article.

Why does my Level lock show up twice in Google Home?

You may have paired the lock with Matter before unpairing it using the original protocol (e.g., Wi-Fi). Level's duplicate locks article says pairing the same lock with an ecosystem app using more than one protocol can cause problems operating the lock, and to remove the non-Matter one via Google Home app > Devices > the lock connected via Level Connect > Unlink Level Home > Remove.
