Which smart home platforms support Matter smart locks?
All five major platforms we track pair a Matter lock directly and can use its locked/unlocked state to start an automation. Apple Home, SmartThings, and Home Assistant give full lock and unlock control, and both directions work as automation actions. Google Home is Partial on control and actions because remote unlock is disabled for locks that don't require a PIN and voice unlock is disabled; Alexa can lock in routines but not unlock, and its trigger has no Amazon-published statement, so we rate Alexa Medium confidence.
| Platform | Pairs | Control | Starts an automation | Automation action | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
| Google Home | Yes | Partial | Yes | Partial | High |
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | Yes | Yes | Partial | Med |
| SmartThings | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | High |
Matter locks on Apple Home (HomeKit)
Apple Home pairs Matter locks directly and treats them as native accessories. Apple's Matter accessory list includes locks, and the minimum platform version is iOS 16.1. You need an Apple Home hub (HomePod or Apple TV) for remote access and full automations, and a Thread border router for Thread locks.
Apple's iPhone automation guide says you can run a scene when you unlock the front door, and Apple's scenes and automations help describes a "Good Night" scene that locks the front door. Independent native Matter hands-ons support this. A 2026-01-06 The Verge hands-on with the Aqara U400 added the lock by Matter code and used it in scenes, and a 2026-04-20 9to5Mac review found Home app unlock and automations. Additional dated tests include The Verge's 2025-08-26 Level Lock Pro hands-on and its 2026-07-09 Schlage Sense Pro review.
Two caveats: a lock's door open/close sensor may not show in Apple Home, and Thread onboarding can fail at first on some locks. Lock and unlock actions are subject to Apple security prompts.
Matter locks on Google Home: why unlock is limited
Google's Matter supported-devices page lists Door Lock, but remote unlock is disabled without a PIN and voice unlock is disabled. That makes control and automation actions Partial rather than full. Google's consumer automation starters and actions list includes a door locked/unlocked starter and a Lock action, and notes that PIN-required locks aren't supported for that action.
A 2025-09-22 9to5Google hands-on with the Yale Smart Lock Matter paired it into Google Home only and used lock/unlock, access codes, and vacation mode. The Verge's 2025-08-26 Level Lock Pro hands-on found door status visible in Google Home and Matter routines/automations.
In practice, Google Home is solid for checking state, locking, and unlocking locks that require a PIN, but it does not give the same unrestricted unlock automations as Apple, SmartThings, or Home Assistant.
Can Alexa unlock a Matter lock in a routine?
Alexa pairs Matter locks through a Matter-enabled Echo or eero hub (Amazon lists locks on its Matter device categories page) and can control them, but lock state as a routine trigger has medium confidence because no Amazon-published page states it. Automation actions are Partial: native routines offer lock, not unlock.
Amazon's Alexa.LockController page says you can't unlock a device by default until unlock is enabled in the Alexa app, and voice unlock then needs a voice code. A Nuki Smart Lock Pro 5th gen owner using Matter reported on 2025-04-07, in a Nuki developer forum thread, that Alexa routines offered only LOCK; Nuki staff replied on 2025-04-08 that the Amazon restriction appears general. A 2025-02-19 Nuki Ultra owner built routines on Unlocked/Locked/Blocked, but the skill-vs-Matter route was not stated. Schlage's vendor page says both locking and unlocking can be included in Alexa routines, but that is for its Wi-Fi cloud-skill path, not Matter.
A workaround is a routine Custom Action that speaks the unlock phrase plus your voice code, but that is not a native unlock action.
Matter locks on SmartThings
SmartThings lists Door Lock on its Matter Devices Support page. The Verge's 2025-06-13 Kwikset Halo Select review paired a Matter-over-Thread lock into SmartThings and used routines, automations, and voice commands. The same 2025-08-26 Level Lock Pro hands-on also found SmartThings among the Matter platforms that could add the lock to routines and automations.
You need a SmartThings-compatible hub, such as a standalone hub, Samsung TV, or Station.
Matter locks on Home Assistant
Home Assistant pairs Matter locks through the Matter Server integration. The lock integration has triggers for locked, unlocked, opened, and jammed states, and actions for lock, unlock, and open. The HA Matter integration page and HA lock building block document this.
Independent native Matter tests include a 2026-09-16 raspberry.tips Nuki Smart Lock Ultra setup that commissioned the lock via Matter over Thread in the HA Companion app and used lock/unlock and door sensor entities in automations. A 2024-07-13 Derek Seaman Aqara U200 test found near-instant, accurate state after sharing the lock from Apple Home pairing mode.
One caveat: some locks don't expose all Matter features to Home Assistant. Nuki's firmware, for example, doesn't expose Matter PIN commands.
Why platforms limit unlocking
Locking is easy everywhere. Unlocking is where platforms differ, mostly for safety. Google Home disables remote unlock for locks that don't require a PIN and disables voice unlock. Amazon keeps unlock off by default and requires a voice code after you enable it. In routines, Amazon's native Matter path has been observed to offer only lock, not unlock.
Apple Home allows unlock actions but can gate them behind security prompts. SmartThings and Home Assistant allow full unlock from automations. Day to day, this means a "lock the door at night" routine works on every platform, but an "unlock when I arrive" automation is only supported by Apple Home, SmartThings, and Home Assistant.
Which platform is best for a Matter smart lock?
We don't rank locks or platforms. From the data we track, choose Apple Home, SmartThings, or Home Assistant if you want unlock as an automation action, such as "unlock when I arrive" or "when the door unlocks, turn on the hallway lights." Google Home is a good fit for status, locking, and app unlock on PIN-required locks. Alexa works well for voice and app control and for lock-at-night routines, but not routine unlock.
Matter lets you share one lock with more than one platform, so you don't always have to pick a single ecosystem. See our general multi-admin page for how Matter sharing works.
Matter smart locks we track

How we checked
Values come from the MatterCheck matrix v1.14. High confidence requires an official statement plus a dated hands-on test on that platform; Medium confidence means one half is missing or relies on a weaker source. Each cell's last-checked date is recorded in the live matrix. See our methodology, the door lock page, the multi-admin page, and hub requirements for more detail.
Last reviewed 2026-10-19. Platform support changes with app and firmware updates; check the live door lock page for the current cell values.
