Nuki and Matter: which Nuki smart locks work with Matter, which hub you need, and how to set them up

From the 4th generation onwards, Nuki Smart Locks support Matter over Thread — that covers the Smart Lock Go, Smart Lock Pro, Smart Lock Ultra, and the 4th-generation Smart Lock and Smart Lock Pro. Older 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation locks do not support Matter. You need a Matter hub that is also a Thread border router, and you enable Matter in the Nuki app before pairing with your platform.

Nuki's Matter steps come from its help center and its own press releases. Hub lists can change, and the Nuki app is still used to turn Matter on, so follow your lock's app and your platform's own instructions where they differ.

Which Nuki locks work with Matter

Nuki's Matter integration article says that "from the Smart Lock (4th Generation) onwards the Smart Lock supports Matter." Nuki's generations article gives the full picture in a table. Matter over Thread is listed as yes for the Smart Lock Pro (5th Generation), Smart Lock Ultra, Smart Lock Go, Smart Lock Pro (4th Generation), and Smart Lock (4th Generation). Matter over Thread is listed as no for the Smart Lock 3.0 Pro, Smart Lock 3.0, Smart Lock 2.0, and Smart Lock (1st Generation). Nuki's integrations article names the same Matter-capable set: Smart Lock Ultra, Smart Lock Pro, Smart Lock Go, and Smart Locks of the 4th Generation.

The 2nd and 3rd generation locks are not Matter devices. Nuki's integrations article says those older locks support HomeKit via Bluetooth, which is a different integration path and not Matter. If you have a 3.0, 3.0 Pro, 2.0, or 1st generation lock and want Matter, you would need one of the newer models. You can check which generation you have in the Nuki app under device settings, then Features & Configuration > General, according to Nuki's generations article.

The CSA's product listings back up the supported models. The Nuki Smart Lock (4th Generation) listing shows certificate CSA245BFMAT44146-24, certified 10/02/2024, Matter spec 1.2, Product ID 0x00B0, and transport Thread plus Bluetooth. The Nuki Smart Lock Pro (4th Generation) listing shows certificate CSA2520EMAT45408-24, certified 04/23/2025, spec 1.4, and Product ID 0x00B1. The Nuki Smart Lock Go listing shows certificate CSA25211MAT45411-24, certified 04/23/2025, spec 1.4, and Product ID 0x00C1. The Nuki Smart Lock Ultra listing shows certificate CSA25E3AMAT48524-24, certified 11/18/2025, spec 1.4.1, and Product ID 0x00A1. The Nuki Smart Lock Pro listing — the 5th-generation model — shows certificate CSA25E3BMAT48525-24, certified 11/18/2025, spec 1.4.1, and Product ID 0x00B2. All five list transport as Thread and Bluetooth, and all five use Primary Device Type ID 0x000A.

MatterCheck tracks 2 Nuki products out of 391 tracked products, both door locks, both with Thread transport. One row is the Smart Lock Pro (4th Generation) with Matter 1.4 and certificate CSA2520EMAT45408-24, plus a note pointing to the newer Smart Lock Pro certificate CSA25E3BMAT48525-24 for Matter 1.4.1. The other row is named "Smart Lock" with part hint 0x00A1 and certificate CSA25E3AMAT48524-24, certified 2025-11-18. That product ID and certificate match the CSA Ultra listing, but MatterCheck's own row is titled Smart Lock, so both facts are worth knowing: MatterCheck lists it as Smart Lock from CSA DCL records, and the CSA Ultra listing uses the same Product ID 0x00A1 and certificate. You can verify any Nuki model against the CSA certification records or look for the Matter logo on packaging. See also our products page.

Thread, Wi-Fi and the hub you need

Nuki supports Matter via Thread only. Nuki's Thread article says that "due to the high energy consumption of Wi-Fi, Nuki will continue to only support Matter via Thread in the future." The setup article adds that some hubs only support Matter via Wi-Fi, so you need a hub that specifically supports Matter via Thread. The built-in Wi-Fi on the Pro, Ultra, and Go is for Nuki-app remote access, not for Matter. Don't think of these as Matter-over-Wi-Fi locks — the CSA listings all show Thread plus Bluetooth as the transport interfaces. For background on the trade-offs, see our Thread vs Wi-Fi guide.

Nuki's setup article lists compatible hubs by brand, with two columns: Matter via Thread, and Remote Access via Thread. For Apple, the Apple TV 4K (3rd gen, 128 GB), Apple TV 4K (2nd gen) with Thread support, HomePod (2nd gen), and HomePod mini are all yes for both. For Google, the Nest Hub (2nd gen) supports Matter via Thread but not Remote Access via Thread; the Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and TV Streamer are yes for both, while Nest Wifi is Matter yes but remote no. For SmartThings, the Hub v3, Station, Aeotec SmartThings Hub, and Aeotec SmartThings Hub 2 are all yes for both. For Alexa, the Echo (4th Gen), Echo Hub, Echo Plus (2nd gen), Echo Show 8 (3rd gen), Echo Show 10 (3rd gen), and Echo Studio support Matter via Thread but not Remote Access via Thread; the eero 6, eero 6+, eero Pro 6, eero Pro 6E, and eero Max 7 are yes for both. For Home Assistant, Nuki's table lists the Home Assistant Connect ZBT-1 as yes for both. Homey's Pro (Early 2023), Pro (2026), Pro mini, and Self-Hosted Server with a Thread border router are all yes for both. Remote Access via Thread also requires the hub to provide Internet access and support NAT64, per Nuki's setup article. Home Assistant's Nuki Matter page separately names the Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 as an example of turning Home Assistant into a Thread border router — that's HA's page, not Nuki's table, and the ZBT-1 and ZBT-2 are different devices.

Remote Access via Thread is a Nuki-app feature, not the same as Matter lock/unlock. Nuki's Thread article says Remote Access via Thread is included on the Smart Lock Ultra, Pro, and Pro (4th Generation), and activating Matter also enables it. On the Smart Lock Go and the 4th-generation standard Smart Lock, Remote Access via Thread requires a one-time payment. But you can still lock and unlock those two models through your smart home app remotely without that payment. If built-in Wi-Fi was already active, it is automatically deactivated when Remote Access via Thread becomes available. If a Bridge is connected, you delete the Bridge connection from Matter settings first. For hub requirements by platform, Apple's, Google's, Amazon's, and SmartThings' Matter pages all describe needing a compatible hub, with Thread devices requiring a Thread border router. Our hub and Thread border router guide and Thread network credentials guide cover the network side in more detail.

How to add a Nuki lock to Google Home, Apple Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant

You must first activate Matter in the Nuki app, then connect the lock in your smart home app. The Matter QR code and 21-digit numeric pairing code are in the packaging, and the pairing code is also on the back of the Smart Lock, according to Nuki's Matter code article. For general pairing steps, see our how to add a Matter device guide; if you've lost the code, see what to do with a lost setup code.

In the Nuki app

  1. Open the Nuki app and select your Smart Lock.
  2. Go to device settings.
  3. Tap Features & Configuration > Smart Home > Matter.
  4. The app shows supported Smart Home apps installed on your phone. Open your preferred app.
  5. Scan the Matter QR code or enter the numeric code.
  6. Follow the instructions in your Smart Home app to complete activation.

Google Home

Google's Matter page says you need a Matter-enabled hub on your home network before adding Matter devices, and Thread devices need a hub that also works as a Thread border router. Google also says IPv6 must be enabled on your home wireless network. Nuki's Matter integration article notes that Google Home does not currently support unlocking and locking via voice commands, due to the switch to Gemini and a limitation regarding the security device action requiring a PIN. See our Google Home Matter guide.

Apple Home

Apple's Matter page says the Home app supports locks, and that with iOS 18 or later you can add Matter accessories without a home hub, with iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max and later able to control Thread accessories without a hub. Apple still recommends setting up a home hub, and Thread accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub such as an Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), or HomePod mini. Nuki's troubleshooting article warns that some iPhones (15 Pro, 16 Pro, 16, 17 Pro, 17) can create a temporary Thread network that cannot maintain a connection after initial pairing — a Thread border router is required. See our Apple Home Matter guide.

Alexa

Amazon's Matter page says to use the Alexa app: open Devices, tap the plus, choose Add Device, select the Matter icon from the Shortcuts bar, confirm you have a Matter device, then scan the QR code or enter the pairing code. Amazon recommends installing the device within 30 ft (9 m) of a compatible Alexa hub or device, and Thread devices need a Thread-enabled Alexa device online. See our Alexa Matter guide.

SmartThings

SmartThings' Matter page describes your mobile device with the SmartThings app as the Matter commissioner and the hub as the Matter controller. For Thread devices you need a Matter controller that includes a Thread border router. In the app, select Add (+) and choose Add Device, tap Scan to scan the Barcode or select the Brand and Device, scan the QR Code on the device or select Enter under Enter setup code if using the Setup Code, then select the Hub and Room for the device. See our SmartThings Matter guide.

Home Assistant

Home Assistant's Nuki Matter page says you need a Thread border router that supports Matter, and you can turn your Home Assistant installation into a Thread border router, for example, by using the Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2. Home Assistant's Matter docs describe commissioning through the Home Assistant Companion app with Bluetooth, then the device communicates over Thread. Home Assistant's July 2025 blog says you need the Nuki app to set up, calibrate, and activate Matter, but there is no hard requirement for a cloud account or account registration in order to use these locks, and once connected you can manage the lock purely through Home Assistant and even delete the app. See our Home Assistant Matter guide.

What each platform can do with a Nuki Matter lock

With Matter, you can unlock and lock your door. Nuki's lock-actions article says Matter 1.2 also distinguishes between "Open door" and "Unlock" — Open door turns the key until the latch is pulled, while Unlock only unlocks without retracting the latch. That distinction matters for European doors with knobs or bars on the outside. Nuki says the Open door vs Unlock distinction is currently only available with Home Assistant as a Matter hub. All other hubs perform the unlocking action you've configured in the Nuki app, so your door opens the right way. Nuki's April 2024 press release said Home Assistant users were first to benefit, and that Apple, Google, and Samsung had yet to implement it.

Nuki's news page says that since the 4th generation launch, the Matter integration can display two lock commands plus device and battery status. Matter 1.2 added the third lock action. Firmware 5.6.10, dated 22/01/2026, updates the Smart Lock Pro, Ultra, and Go to Matter 1.4.1 and includes improvements for "Open door" on the Pro and Ultra, according to Nuki's release notes. Nuki's Matter integration article notes that Google Home does not currently support voice lock/unlock commands. Features like Auto Unlock, access permissions, and Night Mode are Nuki-app features described in Nuki's Ultra press release — they are not described as Matter features. See our Matter smart lock support guide for the broader picture.

Using the Nuki app and several Matter apps together

The Nuki app stays in the picture. You use it to activate Matter, manage Remote Access via Thread, and optionally run Nuki Web alongside Matter. Nuki's Matter integration article says you can use local Matter and the Nuki Web cloud integration at the same time, with the cloud connection acting as a fallback for Matter integration. Nuki Web is the non-Matter route for Google Home and Alexa.

For multi-admin, Nuki's setup article says the Matter settings screen has an "Add to another Smart Home system" option. Nuki's setup article says the additional hub does not need to be Thread-compatible. Nuki's troubleshooting article says you can also create another Matter code from the first smart home app you used, then use that code with the same app or other apps. Deleting the Matter connection is irreversible — the lock becomes unavailable via Matter and you must run the activation flow again. See our multi-admin guide for the general mechanics.

MatterCheck's results for the Matter door lock device type (door lock page) — per device type and platform, not a test of Nuki locks.

MatterCheck checks 27 Matter device types on 7 platforms and tracks 2 Nuki locks (Smart Lock Pro (4th Generation), Thread; Smart Lock, Thread). These results are per Matter device type, not tests of Nuki locks, and the confidence label shows how sure MatterCheck is about each result. For door locks, every platform shows Yes for pairing and for using the lock as an automation trigger. Control is Partial on Google Home, and the automation action (locking or unlocking from a routine) is Partial on Google Home and Alexa. On Google Home that reflects remote unlock without a PIN and voice unlock being disabled; on Alexa, routines can lock but not unlock by default. See the door lock page and the platform comparison for the sources.

When a Nuki lock won't pair or stops responding

Nuki's troubleshooting article also flags two Apple Home notes: some iPhones (15 Pro, 16 Pro, 16, 17 Pro, 17) can create a temporary Thread network that cannot be used after initial pairing, and a Thread border router is required to maintain the connection. There are also reports of Apple TV Thread range decreasing while streaming. For broader fixes, see our guides on a device that won't pair, a device that's offline, removing and factory-resetting, and IPv6 and VLAN network setup.
