Which smart home platforms support Matter light switches and dimmers?
All five platforms MatterCheck tracks — Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant — pair with and control Matter wall switches and dimmers, because a wired switch that switches a light shows up as a Matter light. On/off and dimming work everywhere, and an automation can turn the light on, off or dim it on every platform. The main differences are whether a light's on/off state can start an automation — Alexa is the gap, rated Unknown for on/off lights and Partial for dimmable lights, both at medium confidence — and how each platform handles the extra scene or multi-tap buttons on a switch.
Matter light switch support at a glance
There's no separate "wall switch" device type that the platforms show. A wired switch that switches a light load is filed by the endpoint that switches the load: most certify as On/Off Light, so the on/off light values apply; dimmers usually expose a Dimmable Light load endpoint, so the dimmable / colour light values apply; and a few certify as an On/Off Plug-in Unit, so the app shows an outlet. Extra scene, multi-tap or config buttons on a switch are Matter buttons (Generic Switch) and follow the switch button values: they can start automations, they can't be switched by an automation, and the app shows no on/off state for them.
In the table, Pairs means the platform accepts the device. Control means on/off — and dimming for dimmers — in the app. Starts an automation means the switch's light state can start an automation (for buttons, a press). Automation action means an automation can turn the light on/off or dim it. High confidence needs an official statement plus a dated hands-on test of the device type on that platform. The light rows' High ratings rest on official statements plus dated hands-on tests of Matter lights, mostly bulbs — MatterCheck doesn't claim a specific wall switch was hands-on tested on a platform unless that product's notes say so. A dimmer switch dims only; it never does colour.

Why a Matter wall switch shows up as a light (or an outlet)
A load-carrying wall switch is filed by the endpoint that switches the load, not by its physical form. The Kasa KS205, Tapo S505, Aqara Light Switch H2 (US) and GE Cync On/Off Switch with traveler all certify as On/Off Light, so they appear as lights. The GE Cync Keypad Dimmer and Inovelli White 2-1 expose a Dimmable Light load endpoint — the Inovelli's certification record lists its Dimmer Switch binding endpoint, which controls other lights, not the load itself. The Inovelli White On/Off certifies as an On/Off Plug-in Unit, so Apple Home adds it as an Outlet; you can change Display As to Light in its settings.
Matter's On/Off Light Switch and Dimmer Switch device types (0x0103–0x0105) are different: they're controllers that send commands to bound lights, and they follow the button values. The CSA Matter SDK data model shows those switch types have On/Off clients and Binding, not an On/Off server to command — only load types like On/Off Light have that server. That's the structural reason a wall switch lands in the light or plug rows, while its extra buttons land in the button row.
Matter light switches on Apple Home (HomeKit)
MatterCheck rates Apple Home Yes across the board for on/off switches and dimmers: pairs, control, automation trigger and automation action, all High. Apple's Matter accessories page lists lights and switches among the supported types, and a hands-on test dated 2026-08-03 shows Linkind colour Matter bulbs added straight into Apple Home, with one switched on at dusk and off at dawn by an automation every day since December 2025. A separate hands-on test dated 2026-02-02 shows an IKEA KAJPLATS Matter bulb with a brightness slider and Adaptive Lighting in Apple Home.
For scene buttons and multi-tap, Apple Home offers single, double and long press as automation triggers. Hands-on tests with the IKEA BILRESA remote dated 2026-01-20 and 2026-05-14 confirm those press types, and Inovelli's own guide from 2023-12-14 covers Matter multi-tap scene control in Apple Home. A button shows in Home as an accessory where you set what each press does, but nothing on it can be operated from the app, so control is Partial and automation action is No.
An Apple Home hub (HomePod or Apple TV) is recommended and needed for remote access and automations. With iOS 18 or later an iPhone can add and control Matter accessories without a hub — iPhone 15 Pro or later for Thread accessories — otherwise Thread accessories need a Thread-enabled home hub or border router.
Matter light switches on Google Home
Google Home also rates Yes for pairs, control, automation trigger and automation action on both on/off and dimmable lights, all High. Google's supported-devices table lists On/Off, Dimmable, Color Temperature and Extended Color Light, and Google's automation docs list on/off state as a starter and on/off command as an action. A hands-on test dated 2025-11-30 added IKEA KAJPLATS bulbs directly to Google Home and controlled them like other lights, and a 2023-09-28 TechRadar hands-on switched a Nanoleaf Matter Essentials colour bulb off and on from the app and used it in Google Home automations.
For buttons, Google Home added a "Switch or button is pressed" starter in app 4.8 on 2026-02-02, offering single or multi-press, long press and long-press release as a starter only. A Matter Alpha hands-on dated 2026-02-05 independently used single and double press starters with an IKEA BILRESA. MatterCheck rates button support on Google Home at medium confidence because the control Partial rating rests officially only on a Gemini-labelled release note — the button shows in its own tile where you set what each press does, but that page now counts as supporting evidence only. A Google/Nest Matter hub is required, plus a Thread border router for Thread devices.
Matter light switches on Alexa
Alexa pairs with and controls Matter on/off switches and dimmers — Yes for pairs, control and automation action. The gap is automation triggers. For on/off lights, MatterCheck rates the trigger Unknown at medium confidence: Amazon's Matter categories page maps control only, with no routine-starter column, and sources conflict. One SmartThings Community member reported in 2024-04-11 that Leviton Matter switches and dimmers show up as routine triggers, but a community Matter bridge project reported in 2025-01-06 that Alexa won't allow a Matter-bridged bulb or switch as a trigger. For dimmable lights, the trigger is Partial at medium confidence: two independent native-Matter reports agree a dimmable light can start an Alexa routine — an Inovelli community user in 2025-04-12 and a WiZ Matter bulb report from 2023-08-23 — but bridged Matter bulbs and lamps aren't offered as starters, and Amazon enables specific device models as triggers.
For buttons, Alexa rates Yes for pairs, Partial for control, Yes for trigger and No for automation action, all High. Amazon maps Matter Generic Switch to Alexa.SimpleEventSource, whose doc says users can connect button events to routines. Independent tests show single press only: a Matter Alpha Aqara W100 review dated 2025-05-01 found one of three buttons usable in routines, and a gadget-review-lab test dated 2026-03-14 ran routines from IKEA BILRESA triggers on an Echo Show 8. Double press and hold arrive as a single press. A Matter-enabled Echo or eero hub is required.
Matter light switches on SmartThings
SmartThings rates Yes for pairs, control, automation trigger and automation action on both on/off and dimmable lights, all High. SmartThings' Matter partners page lists the light types, and owner tests show a SmartThings routine turning an IKEA KAJPLATS Matter bulb on (2026-07-04) and dimming working (2026-01-08). A How-To Geek hands-on dated 2025-10-21 added a Cync Full Color Matter bulb by its Matter code in SmartThings, with colours working the same as in Cync's own app.
For buttons, SmartThings rates Yes for pairs, Partial for control, Yes for trigger and No for automation action, all High. A Matter Alpha hands-on dated 2026-01-22 added an IKEA BILRESA directly to SmartThings, which asked for an action for single press, double press and hold on each button. The stock driver reports 3+ presses on buttons that send them, but there's no trigger for release after a hold, and "pressed" waits briefly for a possible double press. A SmartThings-compatible hub is required — standalone hub, Samsung TV, Station or similar.
Matter light switches in Home Assistant
Home Assistant rates Yes for pairs, control, automation trigger and automation action on both on/off and dimmable lights, all High. Matter lights expose light entities, and HA automations can trigger on and act on any entity. A hands-on test dated 2026-08-12 added an IKEA KAJPLATS bulb to HA by Matter QR, showed its on/off state, dimming and colour temperature, and switched it on and off from two button automations. An owner report dated 2026-01-05 shows Govee Matter downlights in HA's Matter integration with colour-wheel control working reliably one light at a time.
For buttons, Home Assistant exposes each Matter button as an event entity with single and multi-press (up to 8), initial press, short release, long press and long release. A hands-on test dated 2026-02-18 paired an IKEA BILRESA directly and triggered automations on pressed once, twice, hold and release. Control is Partial — the entity shows the last press and its type but can't be operated — and automation action is No. Home Assistant needs the Matter Server integration (HA OS recommended), plus a Thread border router for Thread devices.
Scene buttons and multi-tap on Matter switches
Extra buttons on a Matter switch are Matter Generic Switch endpoints, so they start automations but can't be commanded. What each product exposes varies. The Aqara Light Switch H2's extra buttons send single press only over Matter — double press, long press and decoupled mode need Zigbee mode plus an Aqara hub. The GE Cync Keypad Dimmer's two scene buttons report single, multi-press, long press and release in community telemetry. Inovelli's paddles and config button support single, multi-tap, hold and release, and Inovelli says multi-taps work only on Apple Home, Home Assistant and SmartThings.
Which press types can start automations depends on the platform. Apple Home offers single, double and long press. Google Home offers single or multi-press, long press and long-press release as starters. Alexa offers single press only. SmartThings offers single press, double press and hold. Home Assistant exposes the full set, including release. See the Matter smart button support guide for the full comparison.
Wi-Fi or Thread Matter switches?
The switches MatterCheck tracks split by transport. The Kasa KS205, Tapo S505 and both GE Cync switches are Matter over Wi-Fi, so they don't need a Thread border router — just the platform's Matter controller. The Aqara Light Switch H2 is Thread when Matter mode is chosen, and it can't run Zigbee and Matter at the same time. The Inovelli White series switches are Thread and need a Thread border router. The Third Reality MT1 is a battery Thread device. Check the hubs page and the Matter hub and Thread border router guide for what each platform needs.
Neutral wire, 3-way and dimming: what to check before you buy
Wiring requirements vary by model. The Kasa KS205, Tapo S505, GE Cync switches and Inovelli White On/Off require a neutral wire. The Inovelli White 2-1 supports either neutral or non-neutral with a bypass setup. The Tapo S505 is single-pole only, with no dimming and no wired 3-way — the separate S505D dimmer and S515/S515D 3-way kits are separate models. The GE Cync On/Off Switch and Cync Keypad Dimmer include a traveler wire for 3-way and 4-way circuits with traditional switches. Dimmers dim only; none of these add colour. Check the maker's wiring requirements for your circuit, and use an electrician if you're unsure.
Matter light switches and dimmers we track
- Kasa (TP-Link) Smart Wi-Fi Light Switch KS205 — shows up as an on/off light. Matter over Wi-Fi. High confidence. Neutral required, single-pole.
- Tapo S505 Smart Wi-Fi Light Switch (Matter) — shows up as an on/off light. Matter over Wi-Fi. High confidence. Single-pole only, no dimming, no wired 3-way; separate S505D dimmer and S515/S515D 3-way kits.
- Aqara Light Switch H2 (US) — shows up as an on/off light, with extra buttons as Matter buttons (single press only). Thread when Matter mode is chosen. High confidence. Can't run Zigbee and Matter at once; decoupled mode and custom double/long press need Zigbee mode plus an Aqara hub.
- GE Cync On/Off Switch w Traveler — shows up as an on/off light. Matter over Wi-Fi. Med confidence: the store pages show no part number, so the match to the certified models is by name and style. Neutral required; traveler wire for 3-way and 4-way.
- GE Cync Keypad Dimmer Smart Switch — shows up as a dimmable light, with two scene buttons as Matter buttons. Matter over Wi-Fi. High confidence. Dims only; neutral and traveler wire for multi-way.
- Inovelli White Series 2-1 Switch — shows up as a dimmable light, with three buttons as Matter buttons. Thread. High confidence. Neutral or non-neutral with bypass; on/off or dimmer mode set at the switch; multi-taps only on Apple Home, Home Assistant and SmartThings.
- Inovelli White Series Smart On/Off Switch — shows up as an outlet (Apple Home adds it as an Outlet; change Display As to Light). Thread. High confidence. Neutral required; paddle and config button are Matter buttons; humidity and temperature readings appear as Matter sensors.
- Third Reality Smart Switch MT1 — a battery snap-on retrofit over an existing toggle or rocker, listed under buttons, not a wired load switch. Thread. High confidence. Needs a Matter controller and Thread border router.
See the products page for the full product list and the on/off light type page for the platform values behind these products.
Troubleshooting Matter light switches
- Switch shows as an outlet on Apple Home — the Inovelli White On/Off certifies as an On/Off Plug-in Unit. Open its settings and change Display As to Light.
- Aqara H2 extra buttons only send single press — that's the Matter behaviour. Double press, long press and decoupled mode need Zigbee mode plus an Aqara hub.
- Multi-tap isn't offered on a platform — Inovelli lists multi-taps only on Apple Home, Home Assistant and SmartThings. On Alexa, double press and hold arrive as a single press.
- Thread switch won't pair — Thread switches need a Thread border router on the platform. Check the Thread border router guide.
- Aqara H2 won't do Zigbee and Matter at once — it's one or the other. Make sure it's in Matter (Thread) mode for Matter pairing.
- Alexa routine won't trigger from the light turning on — MatterCheck rates that Unknown for on/off lights and Partial for dimmable lights, since Amazon's supported Matter categories don't confirm a light-state starter. Use a button press or another sensor as the routine trigger instead.
- Google Home button starter missing after re-pair — users report the starter can be missing or delayed after a re-pair. Remove and re-add the button if it drops out of automations.
Which platform is best for Matter light switches?
For basic on/off and dimming, any of the five platforms works — pairs, control and automation action are Yes everywhere. If you want the light state itself to start automations, Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings and Home Assistant rate Yes at High confidence (see Google's supported Matter devices); Alexa doesn't yet, with Unknown for on/off and Partial for dimmable lights. For scene buttons and multi-tap, check the press types per platform: Apple Home and Home Assistant offer the most, Alexa the least. Matter multi-admin may let you add a switch to more than one platform — see the multi-admin page and the platform comparison guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do Matter light switches work with Apple Home?
Yes. MatterCheck rates Apple Home Yes for pairs, control, automation trigger and automation action on on/off and dimmable lights, all High. Scene buttons offer single, double and long press as triggers.
Do Matter light switches work with Alexa?
Yes for pairing and control. The gap is automation triggers: Unknown for on/off lights and Partial for dimmable lights, both at medium confidence. Buttons work as single-press routine triggers.
Why does my Matter switch show up as an outlet?
Some wall switches certify as an On/Off Plug-in Unit rather than a light. The Inovelli White On/Off does this, so Apple Home adds it as an Outlet — change Display As to Light in its settings.
Do Matter dimmer switches dim on every platform?
Yes. Dimming works in the app on Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant, and an automation can dim the light on all five. A dimmer switch dims only — it never does colour.
Do I need a hub for a Matter light switch?
It depends on the platform and transport. Wi-Fi Matter switches need only the platform's Matter controller. Thread switches also need a Thread border router. Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant each have their own hub or controller requirements.
Can a Matter switch's extra buttons run scenes?
Yes, as automation triggers. Extra buttons are Matter Generic Switch endpoints, so a press can start an automation or scene. Which press types are offered varies by platform — single press everywhere, with double, long and release on some platforms only.
Is there a Matter light switch that doesn't need a neutral wire?
The Inovelli White 2-1 supports either neutral or non-neutral with a bypass setup. The other switches MatterCheck tracks — Kasa KS205, Tapo S505, GE Cync switches and Inovelli White On/Off — require a neutral wire.

How we checked
Values come from the MatterCheck matrix v1.15. Switch-related values were last checked 2026-10-17 to 2026-10-19 depending on the platform. High confidence needs an official statement covering the feature plus a dated hands-on test of the device type on that platform. For lights, a test of a more capable light counts for on/off only if it shows on/off, and the dimmable / colour row needs a test showing colour change. Wall switches are filed by the endpoint that switches the load. See the methodology, on/off light, dimmable / colour light, switch button and plug outlet pages.
