Which smart home platforms support Matter smart buttons and remotes?
All five major platforms pair a Matter button or remote such as the IKEA BILRESA and let its presses start automations. None can control a button or use it as an automation action, because a button only sends presses. Apple Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant are rated High and Google Home Med, and the platforms differ most in which press types they offer — Alexa is single press only.
Matter button support at a glance
Matter buttons and remotes use the Matter Generic Switch device type. In the table below, "Pairs" means the button joins the platform directly over Matter. "Control" means operating the button itself from the app or by voice: it's Partial on every platform because the button shows in the app and you set what each press does, but there's nothing on a button to switch or adjust. "Starts an automation" means a button press starting an automation or routine. "Automation action" is No everywhere because a Matter button has no commands an automation could send it.
High confidence means MatterCheck found both an official statement covering the feature and a dated hands-on test of the device type on that platform. Med means one of those is missing or rests on weaker evidence, such as a page labelled as AI-generated.
| Platform | Pairs | Control | Starts an automation | Automation action | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Home | Yes | Partial | Yes | No | High |
| Google Home | Yes | Partial | Yes | No | Med |
| Amazon Alexa | Yes | Partial | Yes | No | High |
| SmartThings | Yes | Partial | Yes | No | High |
| Home Assistant | Yes | Partial | Yes | No | High |
Matter buttons on Apple Home (HomeKit)
MatterCheck rates Apple Home High. A Matter button pairs directly and appears in the Home app as a programmable accessory: an AppleInsider review from 2026-05-14 saw an IKEA BILRESA as six programmable buttons, and a 2026-03-22 Kiwi Smart Tech review paired one directly and used single, double and long press per button. A HomeKit News video from 2026-01-20 tested the same three press types, and Matter Alpha's Aqara W100 review from 2025-05-01 found long, short and double press triggers on its three buttons. No triple press or release trigger was reported.
Apple's Matter accessories page lists switches only in general terms, and Apple's scenes and automations help describes automations starting when an accessory is controlled. The BILRESA scroll wheel shows as nine separate buttons and can't dim lights directly. Inovelli's own help pages (a maker statement) document multi-tap scene control for its Matter switches in Apple Home. An Apple Home hub (HomePod or Apple TV) is recommended, and it's required for remote access and full automations, so in practice you want one for buttons; Thread buttons also need a Thread border router.
Matter buttons on Google Home
MatterCheck rates Google Home Med. Buttons pair and press starters work, but Google's statement that a button gets its own tile where you set what each press does appears only in Google's release notes, which say they're generated with the help of Gemini, so they count only as supporting evidence. Google's Home Help page lists "Press patterns to control smart switches (multi-press, long press, release event) — Available as a starter only," added 2026-01-22. The "Switch or button is pressed" starter arrived in app 4.8 on 2026-02-02, which The Verge reported as news.
A 2026-02-05 Matter Alpha how-to commissioned an IKEA BILRESA directly and used single and double press starters; long press and release are documented by Google but not independently tested. Google's developer supported-devices table (last updated 2026-10-08) still has no Generic Switch row. Owners report 2–6 second delays, missed presses, buttons dropping out of automations and starters missing after a re-pair, and the scroll wheel shows as nine pseudo-buttons. A Google/Nest Matter hub is required, plus a Thread border router for Thread buttons.
Matter buttons on Alexa
MatterCheck rates Alexa High. Amazon maps the Matter Generic Switch to Alexa.SimpleEventSource, whose documentation says button events can trigger routines and has no voice commands. Independent tests back this up: Matter Alpha's Aqara W100 review from 2025-05-01 found one of its three buttons usable in routines, and a 2026-03-14 gadget-review-lab test paired a BILRESA scroll wheel directly to an Echo Show 8 by Matter QR and got three triggers (left, up, down) that toggled a plug and started a robot vacuum.
Alexa is single press only: owners report double press and hold arriving as a single press, and on some multi-button devices only one button works. Reliability caveats exist — The Verge saw a BILRESA drop off Alexa and refuse to re-pair on 2026-02-04, and one owner reported about 30% missed presses on an Echo 4 until adding an Echo Dot Max. A Matter-enabled Echo or eero hub is required.
Matter buttons on SmartThings
MatterCheck rates SmartThings High. Generic Switch is listed on the SmartThings Matter partners page, and Samsung's 2026-04-20 blog says 25 IKEA Matter-over-Thread devices including the scroll wheel remote connect directly to a SmartThings hub with a dedicated app experience. Matter Alpha's 2026-01-22 BILRESA review added one by Matter code and found the app asks what single press, double press and hold do on each button — control devices, run a routine, change home mode, or notify — and called it reliable with cloud latency.
Samsung's stock driver code also reports 3+ presses on buttons that send them. Caveats: there's no trigger for release after a hold, and "pressed" waits briefly for a possible double press so it feels slower. Button labels became editable in April 2026 and icons in June 2026. A SmartThings-compatible hub is required.
Matter buttons in Home Assistant
MatterCheck rates Home Assistant High. The Matter integration docs have an "Automate on a button press" section, and each Matter button becomes an event entity with single and multi-press up to 8, initial press, short release, long press and long release. Courtney Rosenthal paired a BILRESA directly on 2026-02-18 and triggered automations on pressed once, twice, hold and release, calling it "reliable and extremely responsive."
The catch: presses aren't offered as device triggers, so you use a state trigger on the button's event entity. Ongoing scroll progress isn't exposed — two 2026 proposals closed unmerged. Home Assistant needs its Matter Server (HA OS recommended) and a Thread border router for Thread buttons.
Single, double and long press: what each platform offers
The button itself decides what press types it sends over Matter, and platforms differ in what they expose as automation triggers:
- Apple Home: single, double and long press per button, as Fly Through Wires found on 2026-09-02. No triple press or release trigger.
- Google Home: single or multi-press, long press and long-press release documented; single and double independently tested.
- Alexa: single press only, and on some multi-button devices only one button works.
- SmartThings: single, double and hold, plus 3+ presses on buttons that send them. No release trigger, as owners and a community developer document.
- Home Assistant: up to 8 presses plus initial press, short release, long press and long release.
Some devices limit what they send: the Aqara Light Switch H2's buttons send single press only over Matter, for example.
IKEA BILRESA scroll wheel: can it dim lights?
It depends on the platform. Apple Home and Google Home show the wheel as nine separate buttons, and in Apple Home the wheel can't dim lights directly. Home Assistant gets button events but not ongoing scroll progress — a developer proposal to expose it closed unmerged. SmartThings has IKEA knob/scroll support, and Samsung says the wheel adjusts brightness or colour temperature. On Alexa, gadget-review-lab got left, up and down triggers. The BILRESA can also pair directly to IKEA smart products without a system, per IKEA's manual.
Smart buttons vs Matter wall switches
Wired in-wall switches that switch a light certify as Matter lights or plug-in units, so look them up in the light bulb guide or smart plug guide. Their extra scene buttons show as Matter buttons. The Aqara Light Switch H2's buttons send single press only over Matter; decoupled mode and custom presses need Zigbee mode and an Aqara hub, and it works without neutral with a 5 W minimum load and no power monitoring. The Inovelli White Series On/Off adds to Apple Home as an Outlet — set Display As to Light — and supports multi-tap, hold and release on its buttons. The Inovelli 2-1 switch has multi-taps only on Apple Home, Home Assistant and SmartThings per Inovelli, with a non-neutral bypass option and no energy monitoring without neutral. The GE Cync Keypad Dimmer has two scene buttons and uses Wi-Fi.
The Third Reality MT1 is a snap-on retrofit over an existing toggle, not a wired switch. Its CSA listing gives it the On/Off Light Switch device type rather than the Generic Switch type the button findings above come from, so check how it shows up on your platform; on Google Home, that switch type's binding (how it would control other devices directly) isn't exposed. A button press can still run lights and plugs on every platform, and blinds on every platform except Alexa, where blinds as an automation action are only Partial.
Thread, hubs and pairing
Most tracked buttons are Matter over Thread battery devices — the BILRESA, Third Reality MT1 and Aqara W100 — so you need a Thread border router (for BILRESA: DIRIGERA, HomePod, or Nest Hub 2nd gen) plus each platform's Matter hub. Apple Home recommends a HomePod or Apple TV as a home hub and requires one for remote access and full automations; Google Home needs a Google/Nest Matter hub; Alexa needs a Matter-enabled Echo or eero; SmartThings needs a SmartThings-compatible hub; Home Assistant needs its Matter Server. The GE Cync Keypad Dimmer is Wi-Fi. Matter multi-admin lets one button join more than one platform — Kiwi Smart Tech shared a BILRESA from Apple Home into Home Assistant, and owners have shared from SmartThings or the IKEA app into Alexa. See our hubs guide and multi-admin guide. Owners say the DIRIGERA cloud link doesn't expose BILRESA to Alexa; add it by Matter share code instead.
Matter buttons and remotes we track
- IKEA BILRESA remote control, smart/dual button — a dedicated battery remote, Matter over Thread. Matter 1.3 to 1.5 certificates. Needs a Thread border router; IKEA says one remote controls up to 10 smart products, and it can also pair directly to IKEA smart products without a system.
- IKEA BILRESA remote control, smart/scroll wheel — a dedicated battery remote, Matter over Thread. Matter 1.4 or 1.5 depending on the hardware version; IKEA says it controls 3 groups or 3 scenes. Scroll gestures arrive as button events, so the rotary feel isn't preserved in Home Assistant.
- Third Reality Smart Switch MT1 — a dedicated snap-on retrofit over an existing toggle, Matter over Thread. Matter 1.3, runs on two AAA batteries and presses your existing physical switch rather than wiring in. Its CSA listing gives the On/Off Light Switch device type, and the maker lists Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings, Homey, Home Assistant and Alexa (via a Matter hub).
- Aqara Climate Sensor W100 — a temperature and humidity sensor (Matter 1.3 over Thread) whose three front buttons also show as Matter buttons. Matter Alpha's 2025-05-01 hands-on found short, long and double press triggers in Apple Home, but only one button usable in Alexa routines.
- Aqara Light Switch H2 (US) — a wired switch (Matter 1.3 over Thread, or Zigbee — one at a time) whose extra buttons appear as Matter buttons sending single press only over Matter.
- GE Cync Keypad Dimmer Smart Switch — a wired dimmer (Matter 1.3 over Wi-Fi, so no Thread border router) with two scene buttons that also show as Matter buttons; programming scenes and groups in the Cync app is outside Matter.
- Inovelli White Series 2-1 Switch — a wired on/off or dimmer switch (Matter 1.1 over Thread) whose up paddle, down paddle and config button show as Matter buttons with single, multi-tap, hold and release; Inovelli says multi-taps work only on Apple Home, Home Assistant and SmartThings.
- Inovelli White Series Smart On/Off Switch — a wired switch (Matter 1.4 over Thread) that reports as a Matter plug-in unit, so Apple Home adds it as an Outlet; its paddle and config button also show as Matter buttons, and it has a humidity sensor under the paddle.
Troubleshooting Matter buttons
- Home Assistant: presses aren't device triggers — use a state trigger on the button's event entity.
- Google Home: if a starter goes missing after a re-pair, rebuild the automation. Owners report delays and drop-outs.
- Alexa: assign actions to single press only. One owner saw about 30% missed presses with an Echo 4 as the Thread hub until adding an Echo Dot Max.
- BILRESA drop-outs: a BILRESA dropping off and refusing to re-pair is a reported issue, including by The Verge on 2026-02-04.
- Pairing QR: if the package QR code fails, use the QR code on the remote itself, as gadget-review-lab found.
- SmartThings: "pressed" waits briefly for a possible double press, so a slight delay is normal.
- Apple Home: set up an Inovelli switch's multi-taps on its separate settings tile (see Inovelli's multi-tap guide), and change Display As to Light for the On/Off model.
Which platform is best for Matter buttons?
Every platform runs automations from a button press, so the choice comes down to press types and reliability. Home Assistant offers the most press types and release events, since each button is an event entity that records each press and its type. Apple Home and SmartThings give single, double and long or hold per button with dated hands-on tests. Google Home works since app 4.8 but is rated Med and owners report delays. Alexa is single press only. See our platform comparison for the wider picture.
Frequently asked questions
Do Matter buttons need a hub?
Yes. Every platform needs its Matter hub — Apple Home recommends a HomePod or Apple TV and requires one for remote access and full automations, Google Home a Google/Nest Matter hub, Alexa a Matter-enabled Echo or eero, SmartThings a SmartThings-compatible hub, and Home Assistant its Matter Server. Thread buttons also need a Thread border router.
Does the IKEA BILRESA work with Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa?
Yes. Independent tests show it pairing directly to Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa, though testers and owners report it dropping off Alexa. On Apple Home you get single, double and long press per button; on Google Home single and double press starters are tested; on Alexa it's single press only.
Can Alexa use double press or long press on a Matter button?
No. Owners report double press and hold arriving as a single press, and on some multi-button devices only one button works in routines.
Can I add a Matter button to Home Assistant?
Yes. Each Matter button becomes an event entity with up to 8 presses plus initial press, short release, long press and long release. Use a state trigger on the button's event entity, not a device trigger.
Can a Matter button dim lights?
Not directly on most platforms. The BILRESA scroll wheel shows as separate buttons in Apple Home and Google Home, and in Apple Home it can't dim lights directly. SmartThings has IKEA knob/scroll support and Samsung says the wheel adjusts brightness or colour temperature. A button press can still run a light or plug automation everywhere.
Why can't I control a Matter button from the app?
Because a Matter button has no commands — it only sends press events. You can see it in the app and set what each press does, but there's nothing on it to switch or adjust.

How we checked
Values come from the MatterCheck matrix v1.14. The button values were last checked 2026-10-17 (Google Home 2026-10-18). High confidence needs an official statement covering the feature plus a dated hands-on test of the device type on that platform. Pages labelled as AI-generated count only as supporting evidence, and a field we can't confirm stays Unknown. See our methodology, the buttons and switches page and the hubs guide.
Last reviewed 2026-10-19. Platform support changes with app and firmware updates; check the live buttons and switches page for the current values.
