Aqara and Matter: which Aqara hubs are Matter bridges, controllers and Thread border routers, and how to add Aqara to your smart home app
Yes — per Aqara's Matter page, Aqara supports Matter in both directions: Aqara hubs with Matter bridge functionality put Aqara Zigbee devices into other Matter apps, and an Aqara Matter Controller (Hub M3, Camera Hub G5 Pro, Hub M100, Doorbell Camera Hub G410 on that page) adds third-party Matter devices to Aqara Home. Aqara's Matter-over-Thread devices such as the Door and Window Sensor P2 connect directly through a Thread border router. The exact hub you need depends on which direction you're going and whether your Aqara device uses Zigbee or Thread.

Each answer in the table names its source, and the sections below give the details. Aqara's pages don't always use the same list for the same role — where they differ, this guide reports both lists as written rather than choosing one.
Two ways Aqara devices reach a Matter app
Aqara's Matter page says the requirement depends on the device type and the ecosystem. It splits Aqara devices into three groups: Matter over Thread devices, Zigbee devices, and Matter over Wi-Fi devices. For multi-protocol devices, the page adds a note: "devices in Zigbee mode behave as Zigbee Devices."
Zigbee devices through an Aqara hub
To put an Aqara Zigbee device into another Matter app, Aqara's Matter page says you need two things: a Matter Controller of the target ecosystem, and "an Aqara Zigbee hub with Matter bridge functionality." Aqara's Help Center guides describe the process as pairing the hub as a Matter bridge in each target platform; once paired, the hub "will automatically expose its Zigbee devices that support Matter Bridging" to that platform. Firmware updates and advanced configuration still happen in the Aqara app, according to Aqara's Apple guide. For the general mechanics of bridging Zigbee devices into Matter, see Matter bridges for Zigbee devices.
Matter-over-Thread devices, directly
For a Matter-over-Thread Aqara device, Aqara's Matter page says "you will only need a Thread-enabled Matter Controller of the desired ecosystem" — no Aqara hub is required. The Door and Window Sensor P2 page states the requirement as "A Matter-compatible Thread Border Router," and says "your device or devices will need to have both Matter controller and Thread border router functionalities." Its tested 2-in-1 list includes Apple TV 4K (3rd gen, 128 GB), Apple TV 4K (2nd gen), HomePod (2nd gen), HomePod mini, SmartThings Hub v3, Aeotec Hub v3, SmartThings Station, Echo (4th generation), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wi-Fi Pro, and Home Assistant Yellow — but it adds that "the functionality such as automation conditions may vary throughout the different ecosystems." For Aqara Home support, the page says "Aqara Border Router such as Hub M3 will be required." See hubs and Thread border routers across brands and Thread vs Wi-Fi for the broader picture.
Dual-protocol devices: Zigbee mode or Thread mode
Aqara's Help Center guides (for example its Google Home guide) use the FP300 as their example of a dual-protocol device. In Zigbee mode, the device goes through the hub as a Matter bridge; in Thread mode, it's added as a Matter Direct Connection (Matter over Thread). The guides recommend setting the device up in Aqara Home first, then going to Third-Party Matter Ecosystems on the device page to get the Matter pairing code — this gives access to all Aqara features. If you scan the device's own code without that first setup, "only basic functions will be available." Aqara's Matter page adds the same note in its multi-protocol line: devices in Zigbee mode behave as Zigbee devices.
Which Aqara hubs do what in Matter
Aqara's pages assign different roles to different hubs, and two pages give slightly different bridge lists.
| Aqara hub | Matter bridge | Matter controller | Thread border router | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hub M3 | Listed with Matter bridge functionality by Aqara's Matter page and the Advanced Matter Bridging page. | Listed as a Matter Controller by Aqara's Matter page and Aqara developer docs. | The CSA Hub M3 listing says it is 'Aqara's first border router product that supports Thread protocol'. | Aqara: Everything Matter · Aqara: Advanced Matter Bridging · Aqara docs: Hub M3 · CSA: Hub M3 (Matter) |
| Hub M100 | Listed with Matter bridge functionality by Aqara's Matter page and the Advanced Matter Bridging page. | Listed as a Matter Controller by Aqara's Matter page and Aqara developer docs. | The Hub M100 store page says 'Built-in Thread Border Router'. | Aqara: Everything Matter · Aqara: Advanced Matter Bridging · Aqara docs: Hub M100 · Aqara store: Hub M100 |
| Hub M200 | Listed with Matter bridge functionality by the Advanced Matter Bridging page; not in the Matter page's bridge list. | The Hub M200 store page says it is 'acting as a Matter Controller'. | The Hub M200 store page says it is 'acting as a Matter Controller, Thread Border Router, Mesh Extender, and Matter Bridge'. | Aqara: Advanced Matter Bridging · Aqara store: Hub M200 |
| Camera Hub G5 Pro and Doorbell Camera Hub G410 | Listed with Matter bridge functionality by Aqara's Matter page and the Advanced Matter Bridging page. | Listed as Matter Controllers by Aqara's Matter page. | Not stated in these sources. | Aqara: Everything Matter · Aqara: Advanced Matter Bridging |
| Hub M2 | Listed with Matter bridge functionality by Aqara's Matter page; Aqara developer docs list Matter Bridge. | Not listed as one. | Not stated in these sources. | Aqara: Everything Matter · Aqara docs: Hub M2 |
| Hub M1S / M1S Gen 2, Hub E1, Camera Hub G3 | Listed with Matter bridge functionality by Aqara's Matter page and the Advanced Matter Bridging page. | Not listed as one. | Not stated in these sources. | Aqara: Everything Matter · Aqara: Advanced Matter Bridging |
Aqara's Matter page gives two lists. For adding third-party Matter devices to Aqara Home, it says "an Aqara Matter Controller from the list below is required: Hub M3 Camera Hub G5 Pro Hub M100 Doorbell Camera Hub G410." For putting Aqara Zigbee devices into another ecosystem, it says you need "an Aqara Zigbee hub with Matter bridge functionality: Hub M3 Camera Hub G5 Pro Hub M100 Doorbell Camera Hub G410 Hub M2 Hub M1S / M1S Gen 2 Hub E1 Camera Hub G3." Aqara's Advanced Matter Bridging page gives a separate Matter Bridge functionality list that names the Hub M200 where the Matter page names the Hub M2: "Hub M3 Camera Hub G5 Pro Hub M100 Doorbell Camera Hub G410 Hub M200 Hub M1S / M1S Gen 2 Hub E1 Camera Hub G3." Aqara's developer docs list "Matter Controller" and "Matter Bridge" for the Hub M3 and Hub M100, but only "Matter Bridge" for the Hub M2 — no source here says the M2 is a Matter controller or a Thread border router.
The store pages describe the newer hubs in more detail. The Hub M3 page says it supports "Zigbee 3.0, Thread, and Matter protocols," integrates "up to 127 Thread/Zigbee devices," and as a Matter bridge "exposes existing Aqara Zigbee devices to Matter-compatible apps like Apple Home." The Hub M100 page calls it "a certified Matter hub" acting "as both Bridge and Controller" with a "Built-in Thread Border Router," powered by USB-A with Wi-Fi 6. The Hub M200 page says it is "acting as a Matter Controller, Thread Border Router, Mesh Extender, and Matter Bridge." The Hub M2 product page itself names Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Amazon Alexa support, but doesn't mention Matter.
Aqara Thread border routers and Matter-over-Thread devices
Only some Aqara pages call a hub a Thread border router. The CSA's Hub M3 listing describes it as "Aqara's first border router product that supports Thread protocol." The Hub M100 store page says "Built-in Thread Border Router," and the Hub M200 store page lists "Thread Border Router" among its roles. The Door and Window Sensor P2 page says "Aqara Border Router such as Hub M3 will be required" for Aqara Home support.
Aqara's April 9, 2025 press release says Aqara "has optimized its Thread Border Routers to support Thread network sharing, allowing them to join existing Thread networks from other ecosystems." Its footnote adds: "Aqara Thread Border Routers may not be able to join some existing Thread networks due to limitation of certain Matter ecosystems. Thread communication across LANs is under development, and its availability is expected in Q2 2025." That Q2 2025 expectation is historical — no source here says whether it shipped. For a Matter-over-Thread Aqara device, the P2 page requires a Matter-compatible Thread border router, and Aqara's Matter page lists Thread-enabled controllers per ecosystem: Apple HomePod (second-gen), HomePod Mini, Apple TV 4K (2nd gen), Apple TV 4K (3rd gen, 128 GB); Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, Google TV Streamer (4K); Amazon Echo (4th-gen), Echo Hub, Echo Show 8 (3rd-gen), Eero models; Home Assistant Yellow; Homey Pro and Homey Pro Mini; and the Aeotec SmartThings Smart Home Hub, Samsung SmartThings Station, SmartThings Hub Dongle and SmartThings Hub v3. Aqara's developer docs' Home Assistant page lists "Nabu Casa Home Assistant Green" instead. For how Thread network credentials get shared, see sharing Thread networks and credentials.
Adding third-party Matter devices to Aqara Home
To bring third-party Matter devices into Aqara Home, Aqara's Matter page says an Aqara Matter Controller is required, and lists the Hub M3, Camera Hub G5 Pro, Hub M100, and Doorbell Camera Hub G410. The same page lists the Matter device types Aqara Home supports, including contact sensors, occupancy sensors, light sensors, lights (Aqara notes that light switches and dimmers are supported via the Light device type), thermostats, plugs, Matter bridges, door locks, buttons, temperature and humidity sensors, robot vacuums, smoke and CO alarms, air quality sensors, leak sensors, curtains, fans and purifiers, appliances, energy devices, and speakers. A footnote says "the support of Matter light switches and dimmer is realized via the Light device type."
Aqara's press release says the Aqara Home platform was "poised to integrate over 50 unique types of Matter-enabled devices," and that the Hub M3 was Aqara's first Matter Controller. It names firmware 4.3.5 and Aqara Home 5.1.9 as "expected to be rolled out later this month" — that was April 2025, so treat it as historical. The Hub M3 store page adds that it "Detects status and integrates ACs into the Matter system," with a note that only one AC device can be exposed to Matter.
Advanced Matter Bridging: Aqara scenes and signals in other apps
Aqara's Advanced Matter Bridging page describes a feature that lets Aqara devices expose their automation conditions and actions to Matter ecosystems. Scenes are added through Profile > Connect to Ecosystems > Matter section, and "will be exposed as a new Plug device" in the third-party app. Signals are created in the same Matter section and are "automatically added to third-party ecosystems as a virtual occupancy sensor." Aqara gives examples such as the Camera Hub G5 Pro's face and vehicle recognition, FP2 fall detection, and power automation.
The press release says Advanced Matter Bridging was initially introduced with the Hub M3 and is available through firmware version 4.3.4 with Aqara Home version 5.1.4 or newer. It says the feature is available across Aqara's Matter Controllers and bridges, including the Hub M3, Camera Hub G5 Pro, Hub M100, Doorbell Camera Hub G410, and "older Matter bridges like the Hub M2, Hub M1S/M1S Gen 2, Hub E1 and Camera Hub G3." The Hub M100 and Hub M200 store pages also mention Advanced Matter Bridging support.
Using Aqara with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant
Aqara's Help Center has one guide per platform, all dated August 13, 2026, using the FP300 as the example device. Aqara's developer docs also have one ecosystem page per platform. The sections below summarise each platform's path.
Apple Home
Aqara's Apple guide requires iPhone/iPad running iOS 16.5+ and, for the bridge route, a HomePod mini / HomePod / Apple TV 4K as home hub. In the Apple Home app you tap Add or Scan Accessory and scan the Matter pairing code generated on the hub's settings page, or enter the 11-digit code manually if scanning fails. The guide notes the Hub M3 "supports both HomeKit mode and Matter Bridge mode," and if you previously added it via HomeKit, you'll need to re-pair it via Matter to use the bridge. For a Thread device added directly, an Apple home hub isn't required just to add it, but is required for remote control and automations. Apple's own support page 102135 says Thread-based accessories require a Thread-enabled home hub such as Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, or a compatible third-party Thread border router. See Apple Home and Matter.
Google Home
Aqara's Google guide requires Android 8.1+ or iOS 16.5+, and a Nest Hub (2nd gen) / Nest Wi-Fi Pro or similar Thread Border Router. In the Google Home app you go to Devices > + Add > New device > Matter-enabled device, then scan the hub's QR code or select manual pairing code entry. The guide notes that Nest Hub and other border routers should be connected to the same 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network (or the same network as your phone). Google's own hub page says IPv6 must be enabled on your home wireless network for Matter to work properly. Aqara's developer docs also describe a separate cloud account-linking route through Profile-Connect to Ecosystems — that's not Matter. See Google Home and Matter.
Alexa
Aqara's Alexa guide requires Alexa app version 2.2.491118.0+. In the Alexa app you tap Devices > + > Add Device > Matter, then scan the code. The guide says the process takes approximately 30-90 seconds, and notes that "Alexa's support for Matter sensors is relatively limited; it may not fully display all sensor values at this time." Amazon's own setup page gives similar steps, and its Thread page says Thread-enabled Echo and eero devices have built-in Thread Border Routers. See Alexa and Matter.
SmartThings
Aqara's SmartThings guide says to tap + > Add device > Partner devices > Matter, then scan the QR code or tap "Add without QR code" and enter the 11-digit code. If a "something went wrong" error appears, the guide says to check that the Hub is online and retry. SmartThings' own Matter page says you need a supported Matter Controller, commissioner, and device. See SmartThings and Matter.
Home Assistant
Aqara's Home Assistant guide uses the Matter integration and the Companion App. For the bridge route, the hub appears as a Bridge device in Settings > Matter > Devices, and for the bridged FP300, "Home Assistant can only read sensor data and perform basic controls." For Thread mode, the guide lists border router options including Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 with the OpenThread Border Router Add-on, Apple HomePod mini, or Google Nest Hub. Home Assistant's own Matter docs describe Bluetooth commissioning and the multi-fabric feature that lets one device join multiple controllers. See Home Assistant and Matter.
What MatterCheck's data says for Aqara's device types
MatterCheck checks 24 Matter device types on five platforms, and it tracks 8 Aqara products among its 106 tracked products: Door and Window Sensor P2, Motion and Light Sensor P2, Smart Lock U200, Smart Lock U400, Light Switch H2 (US), Presence Multi-Sensor FP300, LED Bulb T2, and Climate Sensor W100. The table below shows MatterCheck's per-device-type results for the five sensor and lock device types those products fall into (the Light Switch H2 (US) and LED Bulb T2 fall under MatterCheck's light types) — these are per type and platform, not tests of Aqara products.
| Tracked Aqara products → Matter device type | Apple Home | Google Home | Alexa | SmartThings | Home Assistant |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Door and Window Sensor P2 → Matter contact sensor | Yes (High) | Yes (High) | Yes (High) | Yes (High) | Yes (High) |
| Motion and Light Sensor P2, Presence Multi-Sensor FP300 → Matter motion / occupancy sensor | Yes (High) | Yes (High) | Yes (High) | Yes (High) | Yes (High) |
| Presence Multi-Sensor FP300, Climate Sensor W100 → Matter temperature / humidity sensor | Yes (High) | Yes (High) | Yes (Med) | Yes (High) | Yes (High) |
| Motion and Light Sensor P2, Presence Multi-Sensor FP300 → Matter light sensor | Yes (High) | Yes (Med) | Yes (Med) | Yes (High) | Yes (High) |
| Smart Lock U200, Smart Lock U400 → Matter door lock | Yes (High) | Yes (High) | Yes (Med) | Yes (High) | Yes (High) |
MatterCheck's data shows all five types pair on all five platforms. For light sensors, Google Home can use one as an automation trigger only partly and Alexa can't, both with Med confidence. For door locks, Google Home's control is partial with High confidence, and Alexa's result is Med confidence. For temperature / humidity sensors, Alexa's result is Med confidence. See MatterCheck's data, the five-platform comparison, and the tracked products list. You can also check contact sensors, motion sensors, temperature / humidity sensors, and smart locks in more detail.
How to get the Aqara Matter pairing code
For an Aqara hub (Matter bridge)
- Set the hub up in Aqara Home and add your Zigbee devices to it first.
- Open the hub's settings page in the Aqara Home app. The Apple guide says to find the "Matter" or "Add to Apple Home" option; the Google and Alexa guides say to go to the Hub's Settings > Matter and generate a pairing code; the SmartThings guide says "Aqara App > Hub Settings > Matter > Generate pairing code"; the Home Assistant guide says "Go to Hub Settings > Matter > Enable Pairing Mode."
- Generate the Matter pairing code or QR code.
- In the other app, scan the code or enter the 11-digit pairing code manually.
- After pairing, the hub exposes its Zigbee devices that support Matter Bridging to that platform.
For a Zigbee/Thread dual-protocol Aqara device in Thread mode
- Aqara's Help Center guides for Zigbee/Thread dual-protocol devices (the FP300 is their example) recommend setting the device up in Aqara Home first via Thread.
- On the device page in Aqara Home, go to Third-Party Matter Ecosystems (or find the "Matter" option on the device settings page) and generate the pairing code.
- In the other app, use that app's Matter add path and scan or enter the code.
- Those guides say that without an Aqara hub you can scan the Matter code on the device itself to add it directly, but only basic functions will be available.
Adding the same device to a second app
The Aqara-generated code is how the Help Center guides add an already set-up device to another platform. Home Assistant's guide asks "Yes. It's already in use." when adding a device that's already on another controller. Apple's support page says you can add Matter accessories that were previously paired with other apps, and Home Assistant's Matter docs describe the multi-fabric feature for joining one device to multiple controllers. See adding a device, sharing one device with several apps, and a lost setup code.
If Aqara won't pair over Matter or devices are missing
These are the checks Aqara's and the platforms' own pages give:
- Bridged devices are only Zigbee devices that support Matter Bridging — the hub "will automatically expose its Zigbee devices that support Matter Bridging," not necessarily every Zigbee device.
- Aqara's guides add Thread-mode devices directly, each with its own Aqara-generated code; the bridge route they describe is for Zigbee devices.
- On the Hub M3, if you previously added it via HomeKit, you'll need to re-pair it via Matter to use the bridge functionality, per Aqara's Apple guide.
- Aqara's Google guide says to ensure Nest Hub and other border routers are connected to the same 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network (or the same network as your phone); Alexa and SmartThings guides also mention same-network notes.
- Aqara's Home Assistant guide gives a checklist for "this device requires a border router": check the Thread Border Router is running, sync Thread credentials in Settings > Thread, and restart the Matter Server Add-on.
- Aqara's SmartThings guide says if a "something went wrong" error appears, check that the Hub is online and retry.
- Aqara's Alexa guide notes Alexa's Matter sensor support is relatively limited and may not fully display all sensor values.
- Google's own page says IPv6 must be enabled on your home wireless network for Matter to work properly.
- Aqara's press release footnote says its Thread border routers may not be able to join some existing Thread networks.
See a device that won't pair, a device that's offline, and network setup and IPv6.
Aqara hub firmware, Matter versions and CSA listings
The CSA's Hub M3 Matter listing shows firmware version 4.0.4, certified date 12/19/2023, specification version 1.1, transport interface Wi-Fi and Ethernet, and product type End Product. The CSA's Hub M100 listing shows firmware version 4.0.4, certified date 12/28/2024, specification version 1.1, transport interface Wi-Fi and Ethernet, and product type End Product.
Aqara's press release names firmware 4.3.4 with Aqara Home 5.1.4 for Advanced Matter Bridging, and firmware 4.3.5 with Aqara Home 5.1.9 for additional device types — in the April 2025 release, the 4.3.5 update was "expected to be rolled out later this month". No source here states the Matter or Thread version a hub runs today; a CSA listing's specification version is what was certified, not necessarily what's currently installed. Firmware updates are done in the Aqara app, per Aqara's Apple guide. See checking CSA certification and firmware updates.
Frequently asked questions
Does Aqara work with Matter?
Yes. Aqara's Matter page says Aqara supports Matter in both directions: Aqara hubs with Matter bridge functionality put Aqara Zigbee devices into other Matter apps, and an Aqara Matter Controller adds third-party Matter devices to Aqara Home. Aqara's Matter-over-Thread devices such as the Door and Window Sensor P2 connect directly through a Thread border router.
Which Aqara hubs are Matter controllers?
Aqara's Matter page lists the Hub M3, Camera Hub G5 Pro, Hub M100, and Doorbell Camera Hub G410 as Aqara Matter Controllers. Aqara's developer docs also list "Matter Controller" for the Hub M3 and Hub M100, and Aqara's Hub M200 store page describes the M200 as "acting as a Matter Controller".
Does the Aqara Hub M2 support Matter?
Aqara's Matter page lists the Hub M2 as an Aqara Zigbee hub with Matter bridge functionality, and Aqara's developer docs list "Matter Bridge" for the Hub M2. No source here says the Hub M2 is a Matter controller or a Thread border router. The Hub M2 product page itself doesn't mention Matter.
Is the Aqara Hub M3 a Thread border router?
The CSA's Hub M3 listing describes it as "Aqara's first border router product that supports Thread protocol." The Door and Window Sensor P2 page also refers to "Aqara Border Router such as Hub M3." The Hub M100 and Hub M200 store pages also describe their hubs as Thread border routers.
Where do I find the Aqara Matter pairing code?
For a hub, open the hub's settings page in Aqara Home and find the Matter option — the exact wording varies by guide: "Matter" or "Add to Apple Home" in the Apple guide, "Hub's Settings > Matter" in the Google and Alexa guides, "Hub Settings > Matter > Generate pairing code" in the SmartThings guide, and "Hub Settings > Matter > Enable Pairing Mode" in the Home Assistant guide. For a Matter-over-Thread device, go to Third-Party Matter Ecosystems on the device page after setting it up in Aqara Home.
Why don't my Aqara Thread devices appear through the hub?
Aqara's Help Center guides describe two separate routes: a hub paired as a Matter bridge exposes "its Zigbee devices that support Matter Bridging", while a device in Thread mode is added directly ("Matter Direct Connection") with its own pairing code from Third-Party Matter Ecosystems. So a Thread-mode device is added to each app on its own rather than through the hub's bridge.
Does Aqara work with Home Assistant over Matter?
Yes. Aqara's Home Assistant guide describes pairing an Aqara Matter hub as a Bridge device, and adding Matter-over-Thread devices directly. For the bridged FP300, Home Assistant "can only read sensor data and perform basic controls," with advanced configuration in the Aqara app.
