IKEA Matter devices: DIRIGERA, Thread, TRÅDFRI and which smart home apps they work with

IKEA's new smart home range, launched on 6 November 2025 with 21 products, is built on Matter and uses Matter over Thread. That means controlling the products from your phone needs a Thread border router — DIRIGERA is IKEA's own option, and IKEA says the products also work with Apple, Google, Amazon and other Matter systems. DIRIGERA does three jobs: it's a Matter bridge for older Zigbee IKEA products, a Matter controller for other brands' Matter devices, and a Thread border router. Some of the new products can also pair directly with each other without any hub at all. IKEA's launch announcement covers the range, and IKEA's Matter Compatible System page explains the setup options.

IKEA's pages answer most of these questions directly, but they don't cover every platform. Where IKEA doesn't name a system, this page uses that platform's own documentation and MatterCheck's per-device-type data.

From TRÅDFRI to Matter: what IKEA changed and when

IKEA's smart home system has moved in stages. The older TRÅDFRI range runs on Zigbee, while the new range is Matter over Thread. DIRIGERA sits between the two: it bridges the Zigbee products into Matter and acts as the Thread border router and Matter controller for the new products. The timeline below comes from IKEA's release notes, newsroom posts and the Connectivity Standards Alliance's certified-product listings. IKEA notes that facts in its newsroom posts are historical and may have changed over time.

  1. 5 March 2024 — DIRIGERA release 2.521.006 enables Matter bridge support for lights.
  2. 2 September 2024 — Release 2.615.008 extends the Matter bridge to more device types: lights including drivers, smart plugs and outlets, connected blinds, remotes, motion sensors, open/close sensors, air purifiers and air quality sensors, per IKEA's release notes.
  3. 11 September 2024 — IKEA's newsroom announces that DIRIGERA is updated to become a Matter Bridge, letting Zigbee-based IKEA products work with Matter platforms.
  4. 3 July 2025 — Release 2.805.6 says "DIRIGERA hub is now a Matter controller (beta)", with control of Matter-certified products from one place and bridging of IKEA products into other Matter systems.
  5. 9 July 2025 — IKEA's newsroom says DIRIGERA is now a Matter Controller and previews the 2026 product launch.
  6. 27 October 2025 — Release 2.866.3 adds Matter Bridge 1.3 support for water leakage sensors and energy-measuring plugs.
  7. 6 November 2025 — IKEA launches 21 Matter-compatible products and calls DIRIGERA "a certified Matter controller".
  8. 1 July 2026 — Release 2.975.2 upgrades Matter Controller to version 1.4.2 and brings Matter and Thread stability improvements.

The Connectivity Standards Alliance lists DIRIGERA twice. The DIRIGERA Matter Controller is a Software Component with Specification Version 1.4, certified 07/02/2025. The DIRIGERA Matter Bridge is an End Product with Specification Version 1.3, Transport Interface Ethernet, certified 07/22/2026.

Older IKEA products are Zigbee-based, and DIRIGERA bridges them into Matter. The TRÅDFRI gateway runs the separate IKEA Home smart 1 app, and no IKEA page here says the TRÅDFRI gateway supports Matter. IKEA's lighting support page says the new sensors, like MYGGSPRAY, are not compatible with the TRÅDFRI gateway. For the difference between the two protocols, see Matter vs Zigbee and Z-Wave.

What DIRIGERA does in a Matter home

A Matter bridge for older IKEA products

DIRIGERA's product page says it is a Matter bridge, meaning "all products in the IKEA Home smart system can use the hub as a bridge into a Matter system". The bridge started with lights in March 2024, then expanded in September 2024 to plugs, blinds, remotes, motion sensors, open/close sensors, air purifiers and air quality sensors, and in October 2025 to water leakage sensors and energy-measuring plugs. The CSA's bridge listing records Specification Version 1.3. This is the standard pattern for bringing older Zigbee devices into Matter — see Matter bridges for Zigbee devices.

A Matter controller for other brands' devices

Release 2.805.6 describes the controller role: manage Matter-certified products from one place, bridge IKEA products into other Matter systems, and control products from other smart systems in an IKEA Home smart system, with setup through The Workshop. The product page says "all supported Matter products can be connected to the hub". The CSA lists the controller as Specification Version 1.4. IKEA doesn't publish a list of which other brands' device types DIRIGERA can control, so support has to be checked per device.

A Thread border router for IKEA's new range

IKEA's US Matter page says "DIRIGERA includes Thread Border Router functionality", and IKEA's product pages for the new range carry the same line: the product uses Matter over Thread, so you need a Thread border router to control it through your phone, "for example our DIRIGERA hub". IKEA's FAQ says homes with multiple systems may need to temporarily unplug other Thread border routers while connecting a product, and offers a Thread-network reset in hub settings. Release notes 2.901.5 and 2.934.5 record Thread performance and routing fixes. For how border routers fit into a Matter home, see Matter hubs and Thread border routers, and for what happens when several Thread networks exist, see Thread credentials and multiple Thread networks.

IKEA's launch announcement groups the range into lighting, sensors, and control. The KAJPLATS bulb range has eleven variations across colour and white spectrum, white spectrum, and clear-glass decorative bulbs. IKEA's KAJPLATS article notes that the bulb has built-in dimming and therefore doesn't work with a wall or dimming switch. MatterCheck tracks 8 of these IKEA products in its tracked-products list.

Do you need DIRIGERA, another hub, or no hub?

With DIRIGERA and the IKEA Home smart app

IKEA's US Matter page says you don't need DIRIGERA for Matter devices, but IKEA recommends it because it connects new and old IKEA devices, works as a Matter controller, and makes setup simpler. The product manuals say extra features are available in the IKEA Home smart app when a product is connected to an IKEA system. The app requires iOS 16.4 or later or Android 10 or later, and the hub connects to your router with the provided cable and needs a Wi-Fi network, per the DIRIGERA product page.

With another brand's hub

IKEA's launch announcement says "All Matter-enabled products need a smart home hub to work - like IKEA's DIRIGERA hub, or one from another brand". The MYGGSPRAY and KLIPPBOK manuals say that with another Matter system, "a hub and app from the same manufacturer are needed", and you should check with that manufacturer for available features. IKEA's US page names HomePod or Apple TV, Google Nest and Amazon Echo devices, and its lighting page adds certain Samsung TVs, Apple TVs and Google Nest hubs as Thread border router options.

With no hub at all

Some products pair directly with each other without any hub. KAJPLATS bulbs can pair directly with BILRESA, RODRET or STYRBAR remotes; for BILRESA, IKEA's KAJPLATS article says to press the tiny button in the battery compartment 4 times quickly and hold the remote about 5 cm from the bulb. MYGGSPRAY can connect to up to 10 IKEA products directly, with pairing mode open for 30 seconds. GRILLPLATS supports up to 10 plugs per remote or motion sensor. KLIPPBOK works stand-alone as a beeping alarm. What you lose without a hub: MYGGSPRAY's day/night mode and delay settings need a compatible hub and app, and MYGGBETT and KLIPPBOK send phone notifications when connected to a hub. KAJPLATS starter kits arrive pre-paired, and they come unpaired from each other when added to a hub. Direct pairing is IKEA-to-IKEA, not Matter.

Using IKEA Matter devices with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant

IKEA's product pages say the new products are compatible with smart systems "from, for example, Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung". IKEA's US Matter page names Apple Home with a HomePod or Apple TV, Google Nest, Amazon Echo devices and "any other smart system supported by Matter". For problems in another system, IKEA says to contact that system's provider. No IKEA page names Home Assistant, so that section uses Home Assistant's own documentation.

Apple Home

Apple's support page says Thread-based accessories require a Thread-enabled home hub such as Apple TV 4K, HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini, or a compatible third-party Thread border router. With iOS 18 or later you can add and control Matter accessories without a home hub, and with iPhone 15 Pro or later you can control Thread-based accessories without a home hub, though Apple still recommends setting up a home hub. See Matter support in Apple Home.

Google Home

Google's Matter page lists the hubs that support Matter over both Wi-Fi and Thread: Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro, and Google TV Streamer (4K). Google also says IPv6 must be enabled on your home wireless network, or setup may appear to succeed but control will later fail. See Matter support in Google Home.

Alexa

Amazon's developer page says Thread-enabled Echo and eero devices have built-in Thread border routers and support Thread version 1.1 or 1.3. Amazon's setup page says to install your Matter device within 30 ft (9 m) of a compatible Alexa hub, then use the Alexa app: Devices, the plus, Add Device, the Matter icon, then scan the QR code or enter the pairing code. See Matter support in Alexa.

SmartThings

SmartThings' support page says that to connect Thread-based devices you need a Matter controller that includes a Thread Border Router. The SmartThings app acts as the Matter commissioner during onboarding, and the hub is the controller afterwards. See Matter support in SmartThings.

Home Assistant

No IKEA page names Home Assistant, but Home Assistant's Matter integration documents the requirements: a Thread border router such as a Nest Hub (2nd Gen), HomePod Mini or V2, Apple TV 4K, or Home Assistant with the OpenThread Border Router app. The Companion app handles commissioning over Bluetooth, and Home Assistant supports Matter's multi-fabric feature, so a device can be joined to several controllers at once. See Matter support in Home Assistant.

What MatterCheck's data says for these device types

MatterCheck checks 24 Matter device types across five platforms. The table below shows the pairing result and confidence for the device types IKEA's range falls into. These are per-device-type results, not tests of IKEA products.

MatterCheck's platform data shows that every one of these device types pairs on all five platforms except leak sensors on Alexa, where pairing is Partial and control is No. Switch and button control is Partial on all five platforms, which matters for BILRESA remotes. Alexa's automation-trigger support is Unknown or Partial for colour temperature lights, dimmable/colour lights, plugs, air quality sensors and leak sensors. See the full five-platform comparison for the complete matrix.

How to add an IKEA Matter device

IKEA's FAQ and product manuals describe the steps below; the MYGGSPRAY and KLIPPBOK manuals cover both the IKEA Home smart app and other Matter systems.

  1. Update the IKEA Home smart app and DIRIGERA hub to the latest version if you're using IKEA's system.
  2. Power on the product. IKEA products are ready to connect for 15 minutes after power-on.
  3. Choose the right QR code. The QR code on the yellow cover in the packaging is for the IKEA Home smart app. For another Matter system, scan the Matter QR code from the front cover of the Advice & Care instructions — it's also printed on the sensor, per the MYGGSPRAY manual.
  4. If the QR code doesn't scan, use the 11-digit numeric Matter code printed on the device or packaging.
  5. Stay close. Products connect using Bluetooth (BLE), so keep your phone near the hub and product.
  6. Follow your platform's own add flow — for example Alexa's Add Device or Apple's Add Accessory.
  7. IKEA's KAJPLATS article says the bulb blinks when it's successfully paired.

If the 15-minute window closes, press the system button once for a new window, or turn a light off and on again. For a full walkthrough, see how to add a Matter device. To add the same device to a second app, IKEA's US page points to Matter's multi-admin support, and Home Assistant documents the multi-fabric flow — see sharing one device with several apps. If you've lost the setup code, see what to do with a lost Matter setup code.

If an IKEA Matter device won't connect or shows offline

Most of the steps below come from IKEA's FAQ and lighting support page; the two fixes are from IKEA's DIRIGERA release notes, and Google's IPv6 note is included because IKEA also flags IPv6.

For more on pairing failures, see a Matter device that won't pair. For offline devices, see a Matter device that's offline or not responding. For reset and removal, see resetting or removing a Matter device.

Batteries, updates and working without internet

IKEA's manuals give battery figures for two products only. MYGGSPRAY runs for about 15 months on 2 new LADDA AAA HR03 batteries, and KLIPPBOK runs for about 24 months on the same, per the MYGGSPRAY manual and KLIPPBOK manual. A red LED shows when batteries are low, and the IKEA Home smart app shows battery status when connected. IKEA's lighting page says battery life of the range improves "with articles like smart bulbs and smart sockets acting as the thread, reducing the battery needs."

IKEA's update article says DIRIGERA, the TRÅDFRI gateway and your smart products automatically stay updated. The apps update through the App Store or Google Play. No IKEA page says how IKEA Matter products get firmware when added to another brand's system without DIRIGERA.

The DIRIGERA manual says that when the hub is disconnected from the internet, you can continue to control devices through the app and your home Wi-Fi network. IKEA's update article says DIRIGERA and the TRÅDFRI gateway must be connected to your Wi-Fi router but don't need an internet connection. For the broader picture, see Matter working without internet.

Frequently asked questions

Does IKEA work with Matter?

Yes. IKEA launched 21 Matter-compatible products on 6 November 2025, and DIRIGERA is both a Matter bridge and a Matter controller. The CSA lists DIRIGERA as a Matter Controller with Specification Version 1.4 and as a Matter Bridge with Specification Version 1.3.

Do IKEA Matter devices need the DIRIGERA hub?

IKEA's US Matter page says you don't need DIRIGERA for Matter devices, but IKEA recommends it. The launch announcement says all Matter-enabled products need a smart home hub — DIRIGERA or one from another brand. The product pages specify that you need a Thread border router to control them through your phone.

Can I use IKEA Matter devices without a hub?

Some can. KAJPLATS bulbs pair directly with BILRESA, RODRET or STYRBAR remotes. MYGGSPRAY connects directly to up to 10 IKEA products, and GRILLPLATS supports up to 10 plugs per remote or motion sensor. KLIPPBOK works stand-alone as a beeping alarm. MYGGSPRAY's day/night mode and delay settings need a hub and app, and MYGGBETT and KLIPPBOK send phone notifications when connected to a hub.

Do old IKEA TRÅDFRI devices work with Matter?

Yes, through DIRIGERA. The hub acts as a Matter bridge, so older Zigbee-based IKEA products can be used in Matter systems. The bridge started with lights in March 2024 and expanded to more device types through 2025.

Is DIRIGERA a Thread border router?

Yes. IKEA's US Matter page says DIRIGERA includes Thread border router functionality, and the product pages name DIRIGERA as the example Thread border router for the new range.

Do IKEA Matter devices work with Home Assistant?

No IKEA page names Home Assistant, but the products are Matter over Thread devices, and Home Assistant's Matter integration supports Thread devices with a compatible Thread border router. MatterCheck's data shows the relevant device types pair on Home Assistant with High confidence.

Can the new IKEA sensors connect to the TRÅDFRI gateway?

No. IKEA's lighting support page says the new sensors, like MYGGSPRAY, are not compatible with the TRÅDFRI gateway. The TRÅDFRI gateway uses the IKEA Home smart 1 app, and no IKEA page here says it supports Matter.
